Szoka Edmond Casimir

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 14 September 1927, Cardinal Szoka was the son of Polish immigrants. Ordained in Marquette, Michigan on 5 June, 1954, a year later he became Secretary to Bishop Thomas Noa, a position he filled until 1962. Szoka accompanied Bishop Noa to the first session of the Second Vatican Council. On 11 June 1971, he became Bishop of Gaylord and the following year, President of the United States Episcopal Conference (1972-1977). At the same time, he acted as Treasurer and Secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Michigan. On 21 March 1981, by nomination by John Paul II, he became Archbishop of Detroit until 28 April 1990. Made Cardinal at the Consistory of 28 June 1988, he was called to Rome on 22 January 1990 to become President of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Holy See.
