JOHN PHILIPP OCHS
January 1, 1864 - January 28, 1941
John Philipp Ochs, son of Henry Ochs and his wife, Susanna, nee Ott, was born at Schoenfeld, Russia, January 1, 1864. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church of his home village and later confirmed. His boyhood was spent in his parental home. From 1884 to 1888 he served in the Russian army.
On December 26, 1889 he was married to Mary Ott at Schoenfeld, Russia. This marriage was blessed with twelve children, four of whom preceded their father in death.
On November 18, 1898, he came to America with his wife and two children. They settled in Rush county where Mr. Ochs worked as a common laborer for three years after which he was a tenant farmer near McCracken, Kansas. He took up a homestead in Kearney county, Kansas where they lived for five years after which they returned to Rush county until June 1935, when they moved to Otis.
After a short illness, Mr. Ochs died at the Baker Hospital in LaCrosse, January 28, l941, at 11:30 p.m., having attained the age of 77 years and 27 days.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife; five sons: Henry, Emmanuel, Philipp, Alexander and John; three daughters: Mrs. Maria Salisbury, Wichita, Kansas; Mrs Susie George, Ingalls, Kansas and Mrs. Elizabeth Stockwell, Craig, Missouri; twenty-three grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Peter Ochs of Bison.
Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church, conducted by Rev. H. Raum. The body was laid to rest in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Mrs Mary Ochs, nee Ott, was born Schoenfeld, Russia, April 9, 1870. She passed away November 7, 1941, at six a.m., having reached the age of 71 years, six months and 28 days. She had been ill for the past three and a half years, suffered from dropsy. Edema (swelling), often caused by kidney or heart disease. She was united in marriage to Philipp Ochs on December 26, 1899 miss print should read 1889 in Russia. This union was blessed with 12 children, eight of whom survive. She and her husband and two children, Mary and Henry, came to America, November 18th, 1898. They settled in Rush county, where they lived until 1907, when they moved to Kearny county, and homesteaded, where they lived until May 1912, when they returned to Rush county. They moved to the town of Otis in the fall of 1932, where they made their home until their passing. Mr. Ochs preceded her in death January 27, 1941. Mrs. Ochs was received into the blessed communion with the Triune God through holy baptism in the Lutheran church, and later was received as a communicant member through confirmation. She remained a faithful member of the Lutheran church throughout her life. She leaves to mourn her eight children, who are: Mrs. Marie Salisbury, Wichita; Henry of West Bark, Bremerton, Wash., Manuel, of LaCrosse; Philipp and John of Bison; Mrs Susie George, Ingalls, Kansas; Mrs. Elizabeth Stockwell, Craig, Mo., and Alex, of Hoisington; also 25 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon, November 9, from the Lutheran church in Otis and interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery. ______________

John Jackson Greenway, son of W. M. and M. J. Greenway, deceased, was born July 15, 1895, near LaCrosse, Kansas, and departed this life April 16th, 1928, in Tucson, Arizona, after a lingering illness of five months, having attained the age of 32 years, 9 months, and 1 day. He was the tenth child of a family of eleven. John Jackson Greenway was married to Orrie B. Welch, March 16th, 1916. To this union were born three sons and one daughter, James, Dec. 29, 1916; Jackson, Mar. 20, 1918 (never in my life-time have I heard my father called Jackson, ); Milford, April 10, 1920; Virginia, Feb. 16, 1922. In 1923, he accompanied his father to California, and later sent for his family. They resided in Richmond, California, and he was in the employ of the Key System Transit Company, of Oakland, California. The last four months of his illness were spent with his brother, N. B. Greenway, in Tucson, Arizona. He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife and four children; four sisters, Mrs. Cora E. Swisher, of Deerfield, Kansas; Sarah E. Hill, of LaCrosse, Kansas; Mrs. Lilly R. Newman, of LaCrosse, Kansas; and Mrs. Rachel E. Blake; and four brothers, A. K. Greenway, of McCracken, Kansas; H. B. Greenway, of MaCracken, Kansas; N. B. Greenway of Tucson, Arizona; and W. J. Greenway of LaCrosse, Kansas; two brothers having preceded him into the great beyond. He also leaves twenty-five nephews and nieces and other relatives, and numerous friends. _____________

Funeral for Jack Lee Greenway, 75, Chickasha, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 1993, in Brown - Binyon Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1993, in LaCrosse Cemetery, LaCrosse, Kansas.
He was born, the son of John Greenway and Orrie Belle Welch, on March 20, 1918, at LaCrosse, Kans., where he was reared. He died in Chickasha on Friday, Dec. 10, 1993.
Mr. Greenway married Helen Marie Ochs on Nov. 29, 1943, at LaCrosse, Kansas.
He worked in the oil field ( Gardner Bros. Drilling Co.) for four years and the mobile home business (Commonwealth Trailer Sales ) for 12 years. He lived in Aztec, N.M., in the Four Corners area, for several years and moved to Chickasha on June 8, 1962. Since 1964, he had been disabled due to a heart condition. Mr. Greenway worked in small engine repair for 12 years.
He served in the Medical Corp in the United States Army during World War II and had been a member of the Disabled American Veterans. ( Chapter 17 )
Mr. Greenway was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one son, Jackie Lee Greenway.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Greenway of Salam, Mo. (now of Verden, Oklahoma ); daughters, Jackie Joan McClurg of Fresno, California, Roberta Faye Greenway of Cement, Jerri Drennon of Verden, Brenda Hinton of Salem, Mo.; a sister, Virginia Baldwin of Jetmore, Kan.,; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Interment will be in LaCrosse Cemetery under the direction of Brown - Binyon Funeral Home.

JESSE DANFORTH WELCH was born in Van Buren, Jackson county, Iowa, on January 16th, 1869, and died at Hays, Kansas, July 16, 1927, age 55 years, 6 months. With his parents and brother, they moved to Union township, Rush county, Kansas in 1878. They taking a homestead in 1878, Jesse took care of the farm, while his father, W. W. Welch and brother Henry W. Welch, worked at the stone mason and brick laying trade. He resided on the same homestead until 1915, when he bought property and moved his parents LaCrosse to live. He resided in LaCrosse until the death of his parents in 1918, after which he went to California. In late years, he has made his home in Hays, Kansas, with his nephew, Ray L. Welch and family. His death was untimely and he leaves to mourn his death, his only brother, Henry W. Welch, of this city, three nieces, Mrs. Abbie Darr, of Hoisington, Kansas, Mrs. Orrie Greenway, of Richmond, California, and Mrs. Idell Clark, of Kelso, Washington, and three nephews, Clarence Welch of this city, Howard Welch, of Lucas, Kansas and Ray L. Welch and family, of Hays, Kansas, besides a host of old settlers in Union Township and a great number of friends in LaCrosse and Hays. The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, at 2:30 p.m. at the Pittman Funeral Home. The beautiful casket rested in the west parlor and banks of floral offerings surrounded it. Messers. Newman, H. L. Baker and Little, sang appropriate selections and the splendid sermon was preached by Rev. A. L. Brandsetter, to which a large congregation gave attentive and appreciative hearing. ____________

Presiding will be Rev. Audie Dorrough. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 13, 1999, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Brown-Binyon Funeral Home. Helen Marie Greenway was born the daughter of Phillip Ochs and Verna Morgan Ochs on March 11, 1927, at Timken, Kan. She died on Wednesday, July 7, 1999 in Fresno, California, while visiting her oldest daughter. She married Jack Lee Greenway of LaCrosse, Kan., on Nov. 29, 1943. Jack Greenway preceded Helen in death on Dec. 10, 1993, in Chickasha. Helen and family moved to Oklahoma on June 8, 1962. Mrs. Greenway went to work at Max's Drive-In in 1964. When Sonic Drive-In bought out Max's, Mrs. Greenway was hired as manager where she worked until 1989, when she retired. After working as a fast food manager for 25 years, she moved to Salem, Mo., to live with her youngest daughter. After the death of her husband in 1993, she returned to Verden to live. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and one son, Jackie Lee Greenway. Survivors are daughters, Jackie Joan McClurg of Fresno, Roberta Greenway of Cement, Jerri Drennon of Verden, Brenda Hinton of Salem, Mo.; sister, Alma Scheuermann of Great Bend, Kan.; brother, Vincent Ochs of Newton, Kan.; 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Interment will be in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Brown-Binyon Funeral Home. Note: There were two obits for Helen. The first was on Sunday, July 11, 1999, due to the mistakes the family requested a reprint of the obit as read above. The exception is that the second obit did not include her photo from the first obit. I have included it here as seen above.

John Ochs 65 died Friday September 30, 1977, in Hays. He was born March 6, 1912 in Otis. He married Frances Josephine Kober April 6, 1937 at Denver Colorado. He was a retired employee of the Rush County Highway Department and had moved to LaCrosse in 1949 from Ellis County. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in LaCrosse. Surviving: His wife of the home; one son, Richard, Hays, Kansas; two brothers, Manuel and Alex of LaCrosse; two sisters, Mrs Susie George of Ingalls, Kansas, and Mrs. Elizabeth Dozier of Forest City, Missouri; 3 grand children. Burial will be in the LaCrosse Cemetery (St. Michael Cemetery) Note: St. Michael Cemetery (known as the Catholic section) is on the right as you enter the northwest gate of the LaCrosse Cemetery.

Word has been received of the death of Vernon Benjamin Ochs of Fort Lewis Washington at Tacoma, Washington. He was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Clifton B. Roberts, also of Ft. Lewis. They collided with the last car of several cars, then bounced ahead and sideswiped the next vehicle throwing the men from the machine. Ochs was raised in this vicinity, and has several relatives here. Surviving him are his wife, Mae and children Peggy, Barbara, Dick and Dianne Yager, and Vernon Ray and Phillip Carl Ochs. Surviving him here are 3 uncles, Henry, Alexander of Bison and Manuel Ochs of LaCrosse. Burial was at Ft. Lewis, Washington.

Mrs. Martha Morgan died in Rush Center Thursday evening. She had been ill a number of years. She was a native of Pennsylvania and died at the age of 92 years and 9 mos. The Morgans were among the early settlers in Rush County having come here from West Virginia in 1885, homesteading in Belle Parrie Township. He, Elijah died in 1891. She is survived by four children: Friend Morgan of Nekoma, Mrs Belle Hallett of Rush Center, Mrs. Emma Bellfield of Emporia and Mrs. Anna Kershner of Ivanhoe, Texas. Buried in Locust Hill Cemetery at Rush Center. Martha Jane Robinson was born in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania September 13, 1843 and died at Rush Center July 2, 1936 aged 92 years 9mos. 19 days. Her parents William and Caroline Robinson moved to Wetzel County, West Virginia in 1845 where she lived until she came to Kansas. She married Elijah Morgan October 10, 1865 in Wetzel County, West Virginia. Six children born to them; two, Samuel T. and Clara Louise preceded their mother in death.

Evelyn Ochs Dies Wednesday Evelyn Mary Ochs, 61, died Wednesday, Feb. 15, at her home in Otis. She was born March 20, 1917, at Bremerton, Wash., the daughter of Charlie and Sadie Horner Gossett. She married Henry Ochs Sept. 8, 1937. He died May 30, 1964. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Otis. Survivors; two sons, Gerald, Otis; and Robert, Hayward, Calif.; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Jane Baker, Pemberton, New Jersey; one brother, Wayne Gossett, Idaho and six grandchildren. Services were held Monday at the Otis United Methodist Church, the Rev. Gene Eshelman; burial was in Otis Lutheran Cemetery. Janousek Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

PHILLIP OCHS Phillip Ochs of Omaha, Nebraska, formerly of LaCrosse, died Wednesday, March 21 in Omaha. He was born September 14, 1901, at Alexander. He was a son of the late Phillip and Mary Ott Ochs. He had worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad for 25 years retiring in 1966. He is married Verna Morgan and was later married to Marian Hardesty who passed away in July, 1967. Survivors include one son, Vincent, Cottonwood Falls, Ks.; two daughters; Mrs. Jack (Helen) Greenway, Ninnekah, Okla., Mrs. Gilbert (Alma) Scheuerman, Great Bend; three brothers: Manuel, John and Alex Ochs all of LaCrosse; two sisters: Mrs. Susie George of Dodge City and Mrs. Elizabeth Duzie (Dozier), Forest City, Mo.; 13 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren and other relative and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Wendell, and one brother, Henry Ochs. Mr. Ochs was baptized and confirmed into St. Paul Lutheran Church, Galatia, Kansas, 1918. Verna Scheuerman Dies March 18 Verna Marie Scheuerman, 80, of Hutchinson, died March 18, 1986, at Halstead Hospital. Born Verna Morgan November 26, 1905, at Nekoma, she married Peter Scheuerman January 8, 1946, at Topeka. He died October 25, 1978. She was a resident of Hutchinson since 1959. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Senior Citizens Association and the Eagles Aerie No. 2550 Auxillary, all of Hutchinson. Survivors: son, Vincent Ochs, Newton; daughters, Helen Greenway, Chickasha, Okla.; (Note: Alma Ochs Scheuerman was left off the obit by accident she was residing in Great Bend, Ks.); sisters, Ethel Boese, Alexander, Clara Graham, Denver, Blanche Schrott, Nekoma; 12 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren. Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, the Rev. Larry Siebrands and Mary Wahto. Gravesite service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Rush Center Cemetery. Daisy L. Welch On April 2, 1914, Daisy L. Welch was born to Carrie Ballard Carroll and Frederick James Carroll at their farm home seven miles southwest of Russell, Kansas. She passed away in Kabul Nursing Home, November 2, 1991, at age 77 years and seven months. During her youth, she assisted her father on the farm. She learned to plow the fields and harvest the crops. While attending high school in Russell, Kansas, she met a young barber, Howard F. Welch. They were married on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1931. Her father helped them start farming and they continued farming until they moved to Huggins, Missouri, in 1960 and there they continued in ranching. In 1972 Mr. Welch's health began to fail so they moved near to Mtn. Grove where they resided until Mr. Welch passed away in December 1977. Daisy then moved to her home in Cabool. She spent most of her time at Cabool Senior Center. She enjoyed the people who attended as she loved to have fun and had a willing hand to help. In July 1986 her health began to fail and she entered the nursing home where she was a resident until her passing. She had been a member of the Eastern Star for nearly 50 years and while living in Cabool she attended the Christian Church. She leaves to mourn her passing one sister, Zelda Cochran of Russell, Kansas; one brother, Clyde Carroll of Cabool; sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceding her in passing were her parents, and three brothers, Glenn, Warren and Fred, Jr. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 1991 in Elliott-Gentry Chapel with Rev. David Carroll officiating. Burial was in Cabool Cemetery.

Marie Elizabeth Ochs Dies December 1 Marie Elizabeth Ochs, 75, LaCrosse, died Thursday, December 1, 1987 at the Rush County Memorial Hospital, LaCrosse. She was born April 3, 1912, to Philip and Catherine (Kaiser) Koch at Yakatah, Soviet Union. She was married to Manuel Ochs December 17, 1927, at Cimarron. He died September 24, 1983. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, LaCrosse, and the VFW Auxillary 3147. Survivors include, two sons, Lee, Great Bend, and Robert D., Topeka; three daughters, Betty Kirby, LaCrosse, Carol Hallett, Great Bend, and Valta Dreher, Kinsley; two sisters, Anna Miller, Otis, and Elizabeth Foos, Bazine; 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren. Funeral services were December 4 at the First Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Christine Iverson and the Rev. Larry Ahles officiating; burial in the LaCrosse Cemetery. Arrangements by the Janousek Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials to the church.

Manuel Ochs Dies Sept. 24 Manuel Ochs, LaCrosse, 83, died September 24, 1983, at his home after a sudden illness. Born December 18, 1899, at Otis, he married Marie Koch December 17, 1927. He was a retired railroad employee and had been a lifetime Rush County resident. He was a member of First Lurtheran Church, LaCrosse. Henry Ochs Dies At Otis Henry Ochs, 66, assistant engineer at the U.S. Bureau of Mines helium plant here, died at his home here Saturday night after a brief illness. Born Jan. 27, 1898, in Russia, he came to this area as a small child with his parents. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1948, after 30 years service, and had worked at the helium plant since 1951. He married Evelyn Gossett Sept. 8, 1937, at Port Orchid, Wash. Mr. Ochs was a member of the VFW and American Legion, both of LaCrosse. He is survived by the widow; sons, Robert and Gerald, both of California; daughter, Mrs. Betty Baker, Otis; brothers, Manuel, Alex and John, all of LaCrosse and Phillip, Omaha, Neb.; sisters, Mrs. Luke George, Ingalls, and Mrs. Elizabeth Desie (Dozier), Forest City, Mo., and two grandchildren. The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, at the Otis Methodist Church with Rev. W. Jack Thomas officiating. Burial was in the Lutheran Cemetery with military gravesite rites by the VFW and American Legion posts of LaCrosse. Hoover - Pittman Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Susie George CIMARRON - Funeral for Susie George, 89, will be at 10 a.m. tomarrow at Ingalls Community Bible Church, Ingalls, the Rev. Harold W. Maycumber officiating. Burial will be at Greencrest Cemetery, Cimarron. She died September 16, 1993, at Shepherd Center, Cimarron. Born Sept. 26, 1903, at Rush County, she was the daughter of Philip Ochs and Mary Ott. She married Luke George Aug. 26, 1924, in Rush County. He died Nov. 9, 1969. Mrs. George attended school in Rush County. She worked as a cook for the Ingalls school system for 27 years, retiring in 1975. Survivors include a son, Virgel George, Cimarron; three daughters, Frances Rothgeb, Shirley Davis and Betty Hoskinson, all of Cimarron; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Friends may call until 8 tonight at Swaim Funeral Home, Cimarron. Memorials to the doner's choice in care of the funeral home.

Mrs. Rosa Scheuerman Mrs. Rosa Scheuerman was born June 18, 1900 to Frank and Elizabeth Matel on a farm N. W. of Otis and died July 2, 1955. She married (1) Frank Sohm and one daughter Mrs. Charles Brazda was born, she later married (2) Conrad Scheuerman who died 1936. She became the mother of five of the six children already in the home when she married Conrad. Sixteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Scheuerman. She was preceded in death by her husband, her father, four infants, and two stepchildren. She is survived by thirteen children: Mrs Charles (Alvina) Hanston, Loyd - Colby, Mrs. Friend E. (Velma) Morgan, of Alexander, Glen, Lindy, Gilbert and Merle of Ellinwood, Mrs. Alvin (Charlotte) Scheuerman, of Bison, Marvin of Chicago, Mary Ann of Hays, Conrad, Donald, and Arlyn of the home. Four step children: Bea of Bison, Harry of Sterling, Colorado, Mrs. Freda Clar of Larned and Chester, Smith Center, Kansas. John George John George, 69, 2702 Valley View Road, died June 22 in St. Catherine hospital. He had been in ill health for several years. Mr. George was born May 30, 1892 in Beldeck, Russia. He moved to Otis, Kansas, in 1908. He later moved to Gray County in 1929 and to Kalvesta in 1961. He had lived in Garden City for the past ten years. He was a retired farmer and stockman, a member of the Methodist Church and Odd Fellows, and had worked for the State Highway Commission. Survivors include the widow, Mary, of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Huff, Garden City and Mrs. Fern Cudney, California; a stepson, Eddie Bealrm, Garden City; a brother, Luke, Ingalls, and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, June 26 in the Methodist Church in Garden City. The Revs. Paul Hantla and E. P.
