I have been winter-feeding the birds in my yard for many years.  I was always  thrilled to see the many cardinals (as many as 30 at one time), Titmice, Juncos, Chickadees, and Red-bellied woodpeckers.  A few years ago, I had some seed left in the late Spring and decided to put it out rather than try to keep it until next year.  I could not believe the variety of birds that came to the feeder that Spring.   And when I looked out one morning and saw the most spectacular little bird I had ever seen, I didn't even know what I was looking at.  There was this little bird -- bright blue, and red, and yellow, and green.  I borrowed a bird identification book and found that I had seen a Painted Bunting.  A legend says that the Painted Bunting was the last bird that God created and he put all his leftover colors onto that last bird.  A few days later I saw his mate - and then another pair.   Needless to say, I was hooked.   I have been feeding year round ever since.
We were up in the pasture one beautiful Fall day, playing with  Danny and Emily and their gliders.   We heard a rustle of air above us and looked up to see a flock of Pelicans flying right over our heads.  They are the most wonderful things to watch as they soar and glide on the air currents.  I'm sure glad I had taken my camera so I could get pictures of the kids.
Birds seen on or over our property.
