Mary Stewart
I first came to love Mary Stewart's work when I was about 14 years old. My sister brought home "Nine Coaches Waiting", and once she'd finished reading it, I spent a fabulous afternoon becoming hooked on this author. Mary Stewart puts a lot of background information into her stories, so when you finally close the book, you've been entertained. I have come away from each story thoroughly entertained, and better educated. These are all the books I know of that she's written.
Madam, Will You Talk? This story takes you on a tour of the south of France. The heroine gets herself enmeshed in a post-WWII intrigue while trying to protect a young child. Unfortunately, I loaned my book to someone and never got it back, so I haven't been able to re-read it in years!
Wildfire at Midnight A homicidal maniac, ancient rituals, and mountain climbing in the wilds of Scotland provide suspense for a young woman and plenty of heart stopping moments for the reader.
Thunder on the Right When she set out to meet with her cousin in a convent in a remote valley in France, the heroine wasn't expecting a dangerous adventure. Gothic characters fill the pages of this gripping mystery.
Nine Coaches Waiting An english governess at a Villa in France finds she must protect her young charge from murder. She can trust no one, not even the man she loves.
My Brother Michael This story begins with "Nothing ever happens to me.", and takes you through Greece on a dangerous and mysterious adventure.
The Ivy Tree A somewhat dark mystery, just when you think you've got it figured out, a new twist makes you doubt yourself.
The Moonspinners If you grew up watching Walt Disney on Sunday eveningsduring the 60's & 70's, you probably saw the movie by the same name starring Haley Mills. Another mystery set in Crete, exciting, humerous, and filled with great descriptions of the countryside.
This Rough Magic Shakespearian legends, ancient Villas, and hidden treasure are all brought together in this, my favorite Mary Stewart story.
Airs Above the Ground A circus near the border of Austria and Germany is the stage setting for this mystery.
The Gabriel Hounds A visit to a reclusive and eccentric aunt sets these people off on a dangerous adventure.
The Wind off the Small Isles I haven't read this yet.
Touch Not the Cat   Long-buried family secrets, telepathy, mystery and romance are intertwined and center around a "folly" in the center of a maze. Great reading!
Thornyhold An eccentric aunt who understood her when no one else did, a magical cottage, and witches combine to lead a young woman to find herself and her love.
The Stormy Petrel A young woman finds an idyllic retreat for her vacation, but her plans for peace and quiet are complicated when a prodigal son and a mysterious stranger show up.
The Rose Cottage A young widow finds a new life and answers to old questions when she returns to her childhood home.
The Prince and The Pilgrim Mary Stewart developed an enchanting way to tell the "real" story behind what turned into legend when she wrote the Merlin Trilogy. The Prince and the Pilgrim is another of these enchanted stories.
The Arthurian Legend
The Crystal Cave This is the author's version of the "true" story of Merlin the Magician's childhood and the events leading him to his involvement in the life of King Arthur.
The Hollow Hills This story continues to explain the events surrounding Merlin and Arthur's relationship.
The Last Enchantment Merlin continues to weave his magic as he grows older and fights evil on Arthur's behalf.
The Wicked Day This is the story of Mordred, Arthur's son. Mary Stewart tells his tale, and explains how he came to be Arthur's downfall.
Children's Stories
The Little Broomstick I haven't read this yet.
Ludo and the Star Horse I haven't read this yet.
A Walk in Wolf Wood A delightful tale of magic and mystery that transports you through time.
Poetry
Frost on the Window I haven't read this yet.
Ellis Peters One of my all-time favourite authors! The first book I read was "One Corpse Too Many". I picked it up in a gift shop on vacation because I'd run out of things to read, and this was all they had. I'd seen a Brother Cadfael mystery novel in my mother's bookcase not long before, so I figured it couldn't be too bad. Since then, I've read every Brother Cadfael mystery, and several of the Inspector Felse series. Actually I've read them all repeatedly!
The Brother Cadfael MysteriesI love the fact that each story startswhere the last one ended, because every time I finish one, I wish there was more. I've become quite attached to Brother Cadfael, Aline, and little Giles. I've also developed a thorough dislike for Brother Jerome!

A Rare Benedictine was actually written in response to readers' requests for more on Brother Cadfael's beginnings, since the author had started the series with Cadfael's character already a settled monk. I was delighted to discover this story, because I too really wanted to know how this wise, tolerant man had come to be where he was. This book actually contains 3 short stories. I'd recommend starting with this book if you haven't read any of the series yet. Just be forewarned!. Once you start, you'll have to go all the way!
A Morbid Taste For BonesIn spite of its gruesom title, this is a tale of love, tolerance, and forgiveness. Humour abounds, and Brother Cadfael manages to supply a happy ending to all who deserve it, while ensuring that the villins get their just rewards. Cadfael comes away from this mystery with a secret that will haunt him for years to come. I loved it!
One Corpse Too ManyWhile assisting the townspeople after the ravages of battle and defeat, Cadfael discovers that murder has been done. This was the first Cadfael mystery I read, and it made my a Cadfael devotee. The characters you get to know in this story will become good friends. I highly recommend it.
MonkshoodBitter resentment causes a young boy to be accused of murder, and Cadfael discovers a long-lost love. Once again, Cadfael's humane attitude toward sinners endeared him to me, and the twists and turns he lead me through in his quest for the truth kept me turning pages!
In spite of the war, the annual fair goes on, but a riot, missing people and dead bodys keep Cadfael on the go. A surprise ending!
Cruel guardians bring their charge to the Abbey for her marriage, but the groom is found dead. A young man is accused, and once more Cadfael hunts for the truth while a mysterious stranger watches. A memorable story about honour, family, and love.
This one kept me glued to my book. Cadfael must find the answers to many questions for more than one person who became lost in a blizzard, and ends up finding something he didn't know he had.
A young entertainer seeks sanctuary in the church when he is accused of theft, and once again, Cadfael takes the lead in protecting him and finding the real thief. Suddenly, people are dying, and Cadfael is on the trail. Another page-turner!
When a young novice disrupts the Brothers' sleep with his disturbed dreams, Cadfael is sent to seek out the source of the young man's anguish. In the process, he discovers intrigue and murder.
Young lovers from opposing sides of the civil war pray for a miricle that will allow them to be together, but their love is tested when the young man is suspected of murdering her father. Cadfael leaves no stone unturned to discover the truth in hopes of returning more than one person to their rightfull places. My favorite part was the "battle of Roderick's Ford", and the nun who lead the defense!
Two unlikely friends and a family hoping for a miricle come together at the Abbey, and Cadfael finds another mystery to unravel.
An Excellent MysteryI thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. It's a story of love, loyalty, and faithfulness, with a definite twist. You'll love it too!
The Raven in the ForgateWhen a new priest comes to the parish, his intolerance and strict discipline gives many people cause to wish him gone. So, there are several suspects when he is found dead. It's up to Cadfael to find the truth.
The Rose RentI love all the Cadfael mysteries, but something about this story makes me read it over and over. A lovely young widow, burdened by greedy suitors wants to escape, then suddenly disappears. More than one murder turns up in the search, and Cadfael must solve these mysteries, while trying to discover how a dying rosebush is involved.
The Hermit of Eyton ForestThis one is just packed full of story lines...a runaway, kidnapped children, forced marriages, a missing treasure, and a mysterious hermit. Cadfael manages to sort them all out!
The Confession of Brother HaluinA
Pierre Berton Pierre Berton turns dusty old history into fascinating tales.
The Last Spike I first read this book while vacationing in BC and found the story so fascinating, I just had to make a detour to check out some of the sites mentioned in it.
