It is proposed to set up a web in the first place of the Sydney Davies Record Collection. There appears to be a shortage of old Gramophone records. There are a number of companies re-hashing old records into Compact Discs. But there is much "old" music which appears to be "lost" (and possibly much deserves to be).
For example, the other day, I wanted to hear Sam Liddle's "Abide with Me". I had great difficulty in finding any compact disc with a recording. I consider myself fortunate in finding the Kentucky Minstrels' recording, which was the "record" I wanted.
As it was, the actual 78 rpm record was still in the Sydney Davies Record Collection and I did not know!
Nearly all of the 78 rpm records have sadly been destroyed and many were irreplaceable.
Much of what is left is mainly 33 rpm with a few 45 rpm. Somebody, somewhere may be glad to know certain copies still exist.
