Permanent Wedding Ring

Real People Real Tales

My wife wears a wide, heavy, and thick wedding ring: 22k, 21mm and 93g. We had the ring specially made so that it filled the bottom joint of her finger and it was made so that it could not be taken off and that it was the largest wedding ring that it was possible to wear. We saw from an old book that wedding rings up to 3oz in weight were worn over a hundred years ago and in those days it was normal for women never to remove their wedding ring which often meant that in time they could not be removed at all. It was therefore very narrow and tight. First to see that it would be OK she wore for a short time a looser and lighter ring not so wide with one or more thin rings over it until the maximum possible width was arrived at. Once this seemed OK we had it made. To put it on, her finger was put into icy water for a few minutes and then greased. After some difficulty it went on and filled her finger up to the joint. It was agreed that if it was too uncomfortable it would be removed early on but although we did not realise this would happen after a few weeks a ridge of hard skin formed underneath her finger at the joint which made the ring irremovable. She can still just bend her finger and the only ill effects are the weight which she has now got used to and also her fingers are spread apart and that whenever she grasps anything you hear a loud clank. We felt that unless we showed some pictures many people would say it was not true.
