Homework Club

At The Homework Club students learn how to study smarter and complete their school assignments more efficiently. I not only work on developing a child’s academic skills, but on improving their attitude toward school and learning. Students meet twice weekly for 11/4 hour sessions. Sessions begin with a quick check-in on what students are hoping to accomplish. There will be healthy snacks available when kids feel that they are ready for a break. I will monitor student progress on assignments and assist in whatever way is needed. There will always be at least one specific study skill taught each week and reviewed throughout the year as it is applied. Students will keep a learning portfolio which will serve as a record of their progress and a reference source while at school.

The Homework Club also completes assessments to develop a sense of their learning strengths, styles, and needs. A report is made to parents and teachers and then all people working with the learner assist in setting goals on his Individualized Learning Plan. Throughout the year, I will communicate with parents and teachers to coordinate our efforts so that the learner receives effective instruction.

The Homework Club provides:

Assessment

Direct skill instruction

Emphasis on independent strategies

Collaboration with parents and teachers

Individualized Learning Plan

A positive and caring environment for learning

Some Study Tips from Ms. Jen

Are you interested in how to get more fun time into your schedule and still make good grades? Read on….

  1. Make a to-do notepad for homework (and carry it in your pocket always!
  2. Keep a calendar of club meetings, big assignments, special events,…
  3. Use a large 3-ring binder to keep all of your notebooks and folders tidy
  4. Design a huge label for each folder and notebook (subject, your name, teacher’s name, homeroom)
  5. Go to the afterschool tutoring program – if you are shy invite a pal
  6. Plan a specific time for doing homework each day and ask your family to help you remember
  7. Choose a study area that is quiet, well-lit, and has supplies (spare pencils, dictionary, extra paper,…)
  8. Tell your teacher and your family about what changes you are trying and ask for their support
  9. Work on your most difficullt subject first; then, your longest assignment. Next, is your shortest one. Finally, you do the homework in your favorite subject.
  10. Study for 20-30 minutes then take a short break. It helps to drink water and walk around a little. More than a 15 minute break is too long.
