March 25, 2000 Pack 49 Pinewood Derby

Last year the Pine Wood Derby brought the Pack a new track and new electronic / computerized timer. This year the Pine Wood Derby brings us the FIRST ANNUAL OLDER THAN CUBS or OTC division. This division is for any one who is older than a Cub Scout. This means that Boy Scouts as well as adults are eligible to compete.

As the idea of an adult division and the rules for this division were being discussed within Pack 49, the counsel added an adult division to the district finals. The district finals will be held at camp Squanto on April 8th. This Adult division at the finals is open to all OTCs regardless of whether they win or not at the Pack level. An OTC does not even have to run in a Pack race to enter the Adult division at the finals. There is a $3.00 registration fee that must be in to counsel by March 27th. So we need your registration fee in to your son's den leader no later than March 20th so we have time to mail it in. Any registrations after March 27th will be $4.00. For more details so the attached flyer. Come on you OTCs, show us what you've got.

The rules for Pack OTC division are the same as the rules for the Scouts. The only difference between the Pack rules and the district rules is the distance between axles. The district is allowing changes from the kit slots and the Pack is not.

The Pack will send the top three winners from the Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos 1, and Webelos 2 divisions to the district finals. The registration fee for the top three winners of the Cub Scout races will be paid for by the Pack. Winners in the OTC division will still be responsible for their own registration fee for the Adult division of the district race.

The schedule for the Pack race on March 25th is:
Tiger sign in 12:00, race begins at 12:15PM sharp
Wolf sign in 1:00PM, race begins at 1:15PM sharp
Bear sign in 2:00PM, race begins at 2:15PM sharp
Web 1 sign in 3:00PM, race begins at 3:15PM sharp
Web 2 sign in 4:00PM, race begins at 4:15PM sharp
OTC sign in 5:00PM, race begins at 5:15PM sharp
OTCs will be allowed to sign in at any time during the day.

The Pine Wood Derby will be held at the Briggs building behind the Mayflower church on Main Street.

Impound:
Cars will be impounded when registered. After being impounded, repairs will be limited to replacement of
axles/wheels that are broken/lost during the race.

Specifications:

BODY:
The body in the Official BSA Pinewood Derby Kit must be used. Bodies of other materials will be grounds for disqualification. The body may be shaped, hollowed out, or built up from the original block, as long as it meets all other specifications. Any additions to the original body, i.e. steering wheels, drivers, decals, paint, weights, etc., must be firmly attached. Replacement blocks of pinewood will be allowed as long as all other specifications are met.
WIDTH:
The overall width must not exceed 2 3/4". The car must fit in a 7" by 2 3/4" box.
LENGTH:
Overall length may not exceed 7".
WHEELBASE:
Wheelbase may not be modified, it must be the same as the official kit 1 3/4" across the block between the wheels and 4 1/2" between the axles. There must be at least 3/8" clearance to the bottom of the car body
WHEELS:
Wheels and axles must be as furnished in the official kit. NO one-piece axles, washers,
bushings, bearings or springs are allowed. Wheels may be sanded to remove
the flashing only. NO reductions in width or diameter, or changes in shape
are allowed. All four wheels should contact the track.
WEIGHT:
The weight of the race-ready car must not exceed five (5) ounces or 142.5 grams as measured on the official scales.
OTHER:
Cars must free wheel with no stored energy or movable weights. No magnets or other assist components will be allowed. There is no designated front or back to the supplied body, either end may be the front. Racers will be divided into TIGER, WOLF, BEAR, WEBELOS 1, and WEBELOS 2 divisions. Racing will be on a drag racing computerized time basis. The timing is accurate to .001 seconds. It helps to realize that a tenth of a second equals a couple of inches on the track at the finish. The cars will race once on each of the four lanes. The scoring will be a total time of all 4 runs. This eliminates the 'fast lane syndrome'. The computer will assign the lanes and cars for each heat. If a Scout would like to race against a friend, we will hold 'grudge matches' as time allows at the end of the divisional races.

You must be present to race!
