Here is the Finale.
I finally took a look at the decal set. It is more accurate and substantially cheaper than the set IH sold me in 1992.
Here is an accumulation of everything I have done to this H.
ON THE ENGINE/MOTOR
Installed new pistons, rings, pins, pin clips and connecting rod bushings.
Installed new sleeves, main and rod bearings and new engine gaskets.
Installed new valves, valve guides, springs, retainer clips, manifold bolts and exhaust seats. I also purchased a new manifold.
The head was boiled, fluxed, milled, and intake seats ground.
Installed new distributor cap, plug wires, sparkplugs and 6 volt coil.
I replaced the oil filler cap and oil pan with better used ones. I also replaced the generic IH oil gauge with a faded correct color guage.
On the coolant system, I rebuilt the water pump with new oil seals and a new adjustable belt pulley flange. I installed a new thermostat, hoses and clamps. I replaced the radiator with one that was boiled and leak checked.
TRANSMISSION STUFF
Transmission wise, I changed the 90W with 85W140, and I replaced the PTO seal.
Brake wise, I replaced the brake band housings and installed new brake bands/liners. Also installed new brake shaft seals.
FRAME WORK AND THE REST OF THE TRACTOR
On the seat assembly, I installed a new seat pan and shock absorber and replaced the seat support tube.
On the lights and charging system, I replaced the switch with a low-high-dim-bright switch and installed a new correct ampmeter. I purchased 3 Farmall lights and associated hardware. Also bought new headlight wire assembly and politically correct rear light and main wiring harnesses. Also have new 12 volt battery along with the 3 battery cables.
On the upper steering bolster box, I replaced the 30W oil with grease.
Paint wise, I literally took about everything off to make cleaning and painting easier.
THINGS TO DO YET
On the lower bolster, I need to clean and repack the wheel bearings, and paint the hubs, rims, and lower bolster.
Need to replace the damaged M tire and good M rim with an H rim and tire. I will probably go with used for now.
Carburator must be rebuilt, but I am waiting until the motor is running. It seemed to work fairly well for now.
I will purchase a 12 volt generator with a voltage regulator mounted on top. I am using the 1940's electrical configuration.
THE UNKNOWNS AT THIS TIME
I might have to replace the liftall pump. I drained the oil on Sunday, April 4, and only about 1/2 quart came out. However that oil was very clean. I will get some 10W30 and test it this week.
The Sears puller worked very easily. I mounted it on each piston on the vice to start with then tightened compressor down when half the piston was inserted in the sleeve so the compressor would be straight.
All 4 pistons tapped in easily and were easy to tap down onto the crank journals. I pulled each connecting rod down to within 1/4" of the rod journal, then installed the upper bearing. I then brought the rod all the way down and squared up the bearing with a hammer gently tapping a putty knife.
I am ready to cover up the valves. Clearances are set at 20/1000.
This is the H after an hour of running outside. Immediate problems include a slightly leaking water inspection plate (one behind the carburator), a leaking fuel strainer bowl due to custom made gasket, an erratic governor (probably weak spring, and possibly low compression on one cylinder (valve gap clearance slipped?).
Getting close to done. The hood is straightened out and has 2 coats of paint along with the cover and the seat parts.
Good news. Got a new governor spring. The bad news is that the engine will only run full speed. The problem is that I have a worn out bearing on the right side of the assembly. If you happen to notice some oil on the floor, the liftall countershaft seal is shot.
