the following pictures are of (GULP!) my 1971 JD 4400 combine I shot on 12/04/99 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
After I got the engine running Thursday afternoon, I successfully raised the head, stuck her in first gear, gunned the engine, and pulled her out of the sunken holes the tires were in. I drove it up the lot about 50 feet. I have a small tree I must cut down before I can drive it further to the lot edge. Note the old style grain table. The cutter knives still have burrs and whatnot stuck in them. They are in rough shape.
The chopper exterior is pretty rusty. I have not looked at the knives yet. You can see that the rear tires are near new. Being sunk in the mud did not hurt them nor the rims that I can see. That is my Chevy ROCK pickup in the background.
Camera took an out of focus picture or I jiggled it. You can see the flat screen which was only used through, I believe, 1972.
After using a lot of WD 40, I had no problems swinging the augur tube back to the retracted position. The tube might be usable for next season. It has a lot of rust near the base that you cannot see in this view.
You can see my boo boo with the windshield. It also slightly bent the window frame where the hole is. After I took this shot, I used a bunch of duct tape to shore up the windshield. The center was collapsing. New windshield and rubber are ordered. I will have a professional install it.
