Many people are still have the notion that the lion etc lurks about in the bush, close to home! This is not so, so you need not fear coming to SA! We do have plenty of wild animals, but they are restricted to numerous game parks. The most well known game park is the Kruger Park, and believe it or not, I haven't even been there (yet)!
Here is a postcard of some of the wild animals you would see in a game park. | A Lion Family |
In January 1984 Mike and I travelled around the country a little, showing our Swiss friend Kudi some sights. We went to the Sea View Game Park, which is near Port Elizabeth. There they had two tame cheetahs, that would walk around among the visitors and we had the opportunity to stroke a tame cheetah. Unfortunately the one cheetah was "in a bad mood", so there was only the one that we could touch and stroke! This was quite a weird experience, as somehow I wasn't that comfortable with the idea! Our friend, Kudi, had no such fears. In fact, when we drove through the lion enclosure we had to stop him from climbing out of the car!
Here are two pictures of Kudi and myself with the tame cheetah. |

Oudtshoorn is famous for it's ostriches. At the Ostrich Farm you can ride an ostrich - if you have the guts, which I didn't have, but of course our friend Kudi was keen and gave it a try.

Elephants crossing the road in Addo Elephant Park | At the crocodile farm in George and Outshoorn you learn all about these creatures. I wouldn't like to encounter one unexpectedly! | Monkey!! | There's a little Nature Reserve on the slopes of Devils Peak, and quite often, when driving through to town, you can see the buck grazing on the slopes. |
