The Cycle Can Be Broken
My mother copied and sent to me
"I Got Flowers
Today".
It was in a local Michigan newspaper and listed
as author unknown. Story has it a Mother who had witnessed
her daughters death at the hand of domestic violence wrote
the poem.
The story is incorrect! I had a
version of the poem on this page for months. When it was
added to, it was taken away from. God and all of his
wisdom caused my path to cross with two wonderful people.
The author of this poem and the one it was written for! It
is with great pride and joy that I present you with the
Origional poem and the author of this great work of
art!
"I Got Flowers Today"
I got flowers today
It wasn't my birthday or any other special day.
Last night we had a fight and he hit me,
But I know he is sorry
Cause I got flowers today
I got flowers today
It wasn't our anniversary or any other special day.
Last night he threw me against the wall
and started to
choke me,
But I know he's sorry,
Cause I got flowers today
I got flowers today
It wasn't Mothers day or any other special day
I was so swollen and bruised
I was ashamed to answer
the door
But I know he's sorry,
Cause I got flowers today
If I leave him, where will I go?
What about money? what about my kids?
It's getting worse every time
but I'm afraid to leave
But I know he's sorry
Cause I got flowers today
I got flowers today
My family and friends filed by to see me
Asking why I never left him,
If I only had the strength and courage to,
but I
didn't
So I got Flowers today

(Quotation written by : Allen "Two Trees" Dowell)
"To let you in on a little background, A friend of mine was
in an abusive marrige. In Oct of 91 I wrote the poem for/to
her. Her husband was about six feet tall, she is five feet
two and blind. She not only didn't know when the next
incident would occure, she could'nt even see the blows
coming when it did. I did not write the poem to "win"
her, but to get her to find the strength to get out of that
situation. She is now alive and well and my wife."
Allen "Two Trees" Dowdell
The following is a poem that I wrote and thought it would
be suitable for this page. I was in an abusive mairrage and have broken the cycle!
Eileen
Last Breath
Hiding in my room
Not making a sound.
If I stay real still
I might not be found.
He just got home
and he's mad again.
Nothing will stop him,
he'll fight to the end.
My heart is beating
at a rapid pace.
I picked up a pillow
to hide my face.
Footsteps I hear
coming down the hall.
He's constantly pounding
and beating the wall.
Trembling with fear
my body is shaking.
Trying to be still
no chance am I taking.
The death of silence
is all I can hear.
Everything got quiet
He must know I"m here.
Suddenly he's smothering me
and wont let go.
As he took my last breath
the Lord took my soul.
The pillow I chose
to hide my face
Was the answer to my prayer,
I'm in a new place.

If you are in an abusive relationship it is my prayer that
God put his arms around you and give you the strength to
remove yourself from the situation.
You can break the
cycle!!!
Thank you "Two Trees" for this wonderful award. I accept
it on behalf of all Domestic Violence Survivors.
If you have "I Got Flowers Today" on your site I encourage
you to give credit where credit is due and by all means,
replace it with the origional!
It is not right to take someones writing from their heart
and soul and reword and change it. It is wrong to take
credit for someone elses writings. It is sad to read a
poem and have no idea who the author is. You wouldnt want
it done to you so please dont do it to us!!!
