IDEAS FOR SAMPLE LETTER
FROM COMMUNITY RESIDENT
- Say that you're writing as a community resident -- how long you've been here, why you came or stayed here, what you have most liked about the area.
- Urge any and all possible actions to prevent the construction of a 203,000 square foot WalMart superstore at the intersection of 228 and 210 – that could mean proposing County legislation or denying needed approvals for the developers.
- List the main reasons why you oppose the building of the Wal-Mart (traffic congestion, sprawl growth in one of the remaining open and green corners of country, destruction of existing businesses along the 210 corridor – check the fact sheets for more ideas).
- Add ideas of the kind of development you would like along 210 -- good sit-down restaurants, bookstores, whatever is your idea of good things we don't have - and note that this is the opposite of what Wal-Mart would bring.
- Close by stating that you look forward to an answer on this critical matter.
- Sign your name legibly and include your address.

IDEAS FOR SAMPLE LETTER
FROM BUSINESSPERSON
- Say that you're writing as business person in the community -- describe your position (owner, manager, etc.), name of business and type and its location.
- Urge action to stop plans to construct a 203,000 square foot Wal-Mart superstore at the 228/210 intersection because of its devastating impact on existing commercial development along 210.
- State that research has shown that over 75% of Wal-Mart's revenues typically come from business taken away from existing stores. Compare what you or nearby businesses sell with what WalMart sells and discuss the impact on your sales and business. (Check out the fact sheet for additional information and ideas.)
- Note that the proposed location for Wal-Mart is far from other commercial sites so beneficial spillover effects for neighboring businesses will be minimal.
- The county estimates that each 500 square feet of retail generates one job, which means that the new store would need over 400 new employees — state that you are concerned about keeping your present employees and filling vacancies, when it is already difficult to find workers.
- Close by stating that you look forward to an answer on this critical matter.
- Sign your name legibly and include your address.
