Hello new and old visitors to our site.

We'd like to share with everyone who visits our website all the information that we have collected over the years about the Sittloh clan and it's growing branches.

We never dreamed we would be able to get back to Johann Diedrich Sittloh circa 1740. Thanks to researcher, Dr. Sylvia Moehle of Goettingen, Germany we have learned much about our humble beginnings.

According to civil registry records and church records in Voerden, Germany (the former Amt Damme, Oldenburg now Niedersachsen, which is northeast of Osnabruck) Johann Diedrich Sittloh was married to Anna Cathrine Helsse(sp?). They had a child, Johann Heinrich Sittloh (1760 -1824). He is listed as a cooper and a soldier living on Tabbemeyer's land at Hinnenkampe with his wife Maria Elisabein Schneithorst ((1760 -1824). Johann Heinrich and Maria Elisabein Schneithorst had the children Hermann Friedrich Sittloh on June 27, 1787 and Maria Catherina Sittloh on 10 Dec 1796. Maria Catherina married Johann Arnold Heinrich Wernecke 6 July 1823 in Vorden Parish, Germany and had one son, Johann David Wernecke b.20 Apr 1826.

When Hermann Friedrich married at age 22 in 1809 he was listed as living on Gerhard Uphus farm at Hinnenkamp and his wife to be, Catharine Marie Igelmann (1783 - 1845) from Neuenkirchen, was a maid at Goettken's house in Ahe. Hermann Friedrich Sittloh and Catharine Marie Ingelmann had five sons and one daughter, all of whom eventually came to American and settled in the Ohio/Indiana area. Hermann Friedrich shows up as Friedrich age 64 in the 1850 census in Richmond, IN living with his daughter Catharina Maria Elisabeth Sittloh (husband Henry Nuyengerd) and their daughter Elizabeth.

We believe the five sons of Herman "Friedrich" and Catharine Marie Ingelmann Sittloh are:

1) Johann Heinrich 1809 - ?
wife was Catharina Maria Elisabeth Aufderheide 1810 -1853
2) Johann "Friedrich" 1814 - 1864
wife was Anna "Mary" Elisabeth Schafstall 1808 -1880
3) Johann "Bernhard" 1817 -1869
wife was Catharine E. Kamman 1824 -1889
4) Johann "Diedrich" 1820 -1899
wife was Catherina Maria Knollenberg 1822 - 1894
5) Herman Heinrich 1825 -1849
wife unknown

We have had good luck in America tracking down the descendents of two of those sons: Johann Heinrich and Johann Diedrich "David."

John Henry Sittloh, was born September 21,1809 at Hinnenkampe and he married Catharine Maria Elisabeth Aufdeheide, the widow Dammermann (born April 15, 1810 at Rieste, Germany) on February 20, 1836.

They came to New Orleans, LA on the ship S/S Auguste, under Captain Ludering that left Bremerhaven March 23, 1853 with 358 passengers arriving in New Orleans on May12, 1853. Their destination was Ohio and John Henry was listed as a farmer.

Three of their 5 sons (John Hermann "Harmon",1846 - 1887, Diederick "David", 1849 -? and Bernhard,1852 - 1853) accompanied them. The passenger manifest shows that Elizabeth and Bernhard died on the voyage. The other sons Henry, 1837-1897 and John "Frederick" 1840 - 1881 came to America later. We believe John Henry remarried a woman named Hannah and another son was born in 1859 (William).

John David Sittloh, was born April 12, 1820. At this time we do not know exactly where or when he arrived in America. We do know that he married Catharina Maria Knollenberg on August 10, 1843 in Voerden and his descendents are well documented here in America.

Please continue on the journey by visiting the 'Reference" pages on our website. We hope that anyone searching for their ancestors in the Sittloh line will find the above information useful and, of course, if we have made any errors they are unintentional and we hope you will contact us with corrections.

The primary researchers here in the United States are:

Sharon Sittloh from Sonoma, CA
Shirley Sittloh Mayton from White House, TN
Russ Sittloh from Madeira Beach, FL

All are descendents of John Henry Sittloh and Catharina Maria Elisabeth Aufderheide. You may contact any one of us and we'll be glad to tell you what we know and often what we don't know and hope that you can provide info to assist us in our search.

Your comments, suggestions and other inputs will help us make this site a more valuable asset in finding all of our heretofore 'unknown' Sittloh relatives that may be out there.
