Pass The Salt

As a Christian writer, I believe God has provided me with practical insights concerning the Scriptures and life. I offer my thoughts and ideas, not as a scholar, or as a theologian but as one among the people who is studying and learning more about God each day of her life. The New Testament describes the character of a Christian with a series of interesting words. In Matthew 5:13 (NASB) there is a particular word that has become very precious to me, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how will it be made salty again? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.” In other words, Christians are somewhat like “salt” to the rest of the world.

Pretend for a moment a friend walks up to you and offers you a super size order of piping hot french fries. You look at those hot fries. They are loaded with salt and your mouth begins to water. Crystals of salt cling to each slice of potato. You know you must have a taste of the mouth-watering treat and you pop one into your mouth. The fries are, “ Oh, so good” and you eat more to satisfy your hunger.

Think of this experience in this way, Christian friend; the potato is the person who is seeking something more in life. You know from experience that life can be flat and tasteless without a bit of seasoning in it. Many people have no reason to live today for their lives are empty and meaningless. They are searching for something to live for. They are longing for someone to share how their lives can be worthwhile; they need a taste of salt to make life palatable. You and I should be coming along at any time now to season this person’s life with the hope and gladness of Christ. Well, Christian friend, you and I are like the salt on french fried potatoes. We are God’s seasoning. Christ has given us the opportunity to share what He has done for us throughout the world.

You need not wander far from home to see the empty, hollow eyes of the world’s hopelessly lost people. They are right here among us, maybe living in your own household. They are starting you in the face and desperately searching for happiness. Many of them will not understand, when you share the love of Christ with them. They are blinded from realizing that genuine happiness in life is found in Christ alone. They can’t discount how Christ has changed you and that you are truly changed from knowing Christ in a personal way.

The truth is that a person without the love of Christ living inside of them is among the walking dead. Their spirits and souls are dead. That’s where you and I, Christian friends, make our faith in Christ known; we pour out the salt and share it freely. We have experienced life among the living dead and until someone came along and shared Christ we were spiritually dead, totally miserable, alone, lonely, unlovable, and desperate for joy. We can tell them that once we were dead but now we live in Christ Jesus.
