history
Alexandria: With
the end of French and Indian War in 1763, many people moved into the central
area of New Hampshire. Alexandria obtained its land grant in 1753 but was
not incorporated until June 10, 1782, at which time the required number
of dwellings and families were established there. The early settlers of
Alexandria were mostly Scotch-Irish and had bought the land from British
proprietors. By 1860, the town contained a gristmill, a wagon shop, two
shoe shops, two blacksmith shops, a cooper's shop, and a post office.
Alexandria was the birthplace of
Luther C. Ladd, the first enlisted soldier to lose his life in the Civil
War.
