Affidavit-a written statement of facts made voluntarily and under oath. Arrears- unpaid child support for past periods owed by a parent who is under court order to pay. Child Support- the legal obligation of a non-custodial parent to contribute to the economic maintenance of his/her child, the payment under that obligation. Child Support Standards Act- the law which governs the determination of child support obligations: provides for the application of percentages to a parent's income. Custodial Parent- person with legal custody and with whom the child lives; may be a parent, relative, or guardian. Default- three missed or late payments, or delinquent support equivalent to one month's obligation. Default Order- a child support order issued when the non-custodial parent fails to appear in court after having received a summons. Delinquent- not paid on time or in full. Fact Finding Hearing- proceeding used to examine details of a case. Genetic Testing- Analysis of inherited factors of a mother, child, and father, which can prove or disprove that the man fathered the child. Good Cause- an acceptable reason given by a public assistance client for refusing to cooperate in establishing paternity or establishing and enforcing child support. Guardian- an individual other than a parent, legally responsible for a child. Hearing- a court proceeding during which the facts of a case are heard and a decision regarding the case can be made. Hearing Examiner- an attorney employed by the local Family Court who can hear and make decisions in child support cases. Income Execution- a notice issued to a income payer (usually an employer) directing that child support be deducted from a parents wages.
