The Burdett Bugle

VERY EARLY EDITION - DECEMBER 25, 2000

The Burdett Bugle - Omaha, Nebraska, Volume 8, Issue 1 (Our eighth year)

Motto: All the news that's fit to toot.

It actually seems like Christmas this year, as cold weather has been hanging around for the last month or so. The Christmas Tree, another White Pine with those big soft needles, is decorated and the toy soldiers are stationed outside. Terry, Matt and Bob will again be spending some of the holidays in Las Vegas. They fly out on Christmas Day and fly back on New Year’s evening.

Terry and Bob got away a few times this past year. In March, they traveled to St. Louis to cheer on the Creighton Univ. basketball team during Arch Madness. Terry is pictured next to the famous arch.

In May, Bob and Terry flew to Seattle/Tacoma WA to watch Vanessa graduate from PLU (Pacific Lutheran University). They also had a nice side trip to Victoria, British Columbia, after the graduation festivities. Terry is pictured looking at beautiful Victoria harbor.

Matt joined his parents for a few days in Las Vegas over July 4th.

Bob and Terry’s last trip was over the Thanksgiving Day weekend. They drove down to Kansas City for some more Creighton basketball, to see the holiday lights at Country Club Plaza, and to tour the restored Union Train Station shops and theatres.

Avaya – how eye yah?

Bob spent the first nine months of 2000 working at Lucent Technologies in Omaha. In October, Lucent spun off their so-called enterprise products to a new company called Avaya Inc. Bob has been in the same office for 30 years but the company keeps changing (i.e., Western Electric to AT&T to Lucent to Avaya). He just can’t seem to hold a job.

Bob played a lot of tennis during the year, including two leagues at work and some tournaments. He does not allow his humiliating losses to interfere with his enjoyment of the game and his exercise.

Bob didn’t play too much golf during the year but he did volunteer to work at the BUY.COM Omaha Golf Classic. Bob was the 14th fairway soundman for the Golf Channel all four days of the tourney. His job involved aiming a long directional microphone at: 1.) the golfer talking to his caddy about his club selection, 2.) the ball as the club swung through (to capture that sweet "click" sound), and 3.) the golfer saying "oh shucks" as the ball went too far, too short, too left, or too right.

Terry is always on the go. She works with 2nd grade girls at church on Wednesdays and 5th grade girls on Sundays. She also helps ministries with their bulk mailings and helps arrange meals for new moms. Terry also works part-time at a local Hallmark Creations store and at the Nebraska Furniture Mart. "The Mart" is advertised as "America's largest volume home furnishing store".

PEOPLE IN THE NEWS

Matt is half way through his senior year at Omaha Burke High School and he’s starting to plan for college. Matt was inducted into the National Honor Society this fall. He is also active in sports (tennis and track), does some tutoring and is working part-time as a cashier at the Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Lisa Expecting

Lisa Watts and her husband Jay are expecting the birth of their first son in early January. Lisa is now a full-time mom. Jay continues to work as a programmer at First Data Resources.

Jayden, their daughter, is pictured on the right at the Avaya company picnic and enjoying some watermelon. She is very excited about the upcoming addition to the family. Jayden, now 5, is a kindergartner at Harvey Oaks Elementary School.

Vanessa Graduates from PLU

Vanessa Kramis graduated with honors from Pacific Lutheran University in May. Her degree was in biology. Vanessa hopes to find a job in the pharmaceutical industry. Her parents and sister flew out to Tacoma for the graduation ceremony and all of the other receptions, concerts and religious services that PLU conducted during this exciting and fun-filled week. Way to go Vanessa!

Vanessa and her husband didn’t get to rest for very long after Vanessa’s graduation, as Mark was in the process of transferring to Eglin AFB near Pensacola, Florida. Vanessa spent most of her summer in Omaha, while Mark was learning how to fly the C-32 (USAF Boeing 757) on some secret mission he won’t discuss with his father-in-law.

SPORTS

Burdett, Harris Win Gold at State

Two varsity tennis players ended the season with gold medals around their necks. Senior Matt Burdett and junior Ryan Harris won #2 doubles at the state high school tennis tournament. "All I can say is wow!" Harris exclaimed. "I am just really happy that Matt gets to go out on top like this. He earned this medal, and beating Prep made it all the more sweet." - The Burke Beat
