A Brief Pack History: Pack 603 is believed to have been founded in 1947. It was part of the now defunct Oakland Council, Eden District. Pack 603 was for many years at Del Rey School in San Lorenzo, and moved over to San Lorenzo Community Church in the mid-1980's. There used to be a Pack 612 that met at San Lorenzo Community Church, and it was weak but still active in 1983-84, but was dropped by spring of 1987. In 1983-84, Pack 603 was still at Del Rey School, and Pack 612 met at the church and recruited from Bay School. Sometime shortly after Pack 612 dropped, Pack 603 was "adopted" by San Lorenzo Community Church and moved from Del Rey School to the church. For those of you who are interested in the unit numbering sequence of the old Oakland Area Council, here is how it goes: Each of the nine districts that existed in the late 1950's and early 1960's were as follows (with rough area descriptions): ** Eden District was the predecessor district for both San Leandro and San
Lorenzo (before the formation of Chabot and Arroyo Districts in the 1950's). The old Oakland Area Council no longer exists. The San Francisco Bay Area Council is currently comprised of five Districts, as follows: ** Golden Gate (San Francisco and Daly City)
** Mission Peak (Fremont, Union City, Newark and South Hayward)
** Peralta (Oakland and Emeryville)
** Tres Ranchos (San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley and most of Hayward)
** Twin Valley (Pleasanton, Dublin, Sunol and Livermore) Pack 603 is originally Pack 3 of San Lorenzo at Del Rey School. Harold Taylor has been the chartered organization representative since at least 1983 (he was the Scoutmaster of Troop 612 back in the 1970's). Additional information will be forthcoming as it is sorted through.

Possibly the Original Charter to San Lorenzo Community Church for Pack #2 dated February 28, 1947
During the 1950's, the Oakland Area Council adopted one of the national BSA recommended numbering sequences--adding the district number as a prefix to the unit's original local number. The O.A.C. did this for all the units in districts 2 through 8. As a result, Troop 3 of San Leandro became Troop 503, Troop 1 of Castro Valley became Troop 701, and Troop 1 of Hayward became Troop 801.
Information above is based, in large part, on history provided by Charles Howard-Gibbon, Field Director San Francisco Bay Area Council Boy Scouts of America.

NOVEMBER 2004: Congratulations to Pack 603. It is so good to see that the program is still going strong, that in this fast paced world that there are still boys interested in Cubbing and Parents willing to participate. Looks like you remain very active.
A word of introduction. My husband and I were active in the Pack back in the 60's and 70's when we put our 5 sons through cubbing. We began in 1963 when there were two packs at Del Rey School, we were with Pack 631. Pack 603 was so full in 1960 or 1961 and would not accept any more boys that Pack 631 organized. My husband was Cubmaster and Webelos Leader, beginning in February 1963, for most of the 12 years that we were involved. I was Den Mother, Den Mother Coach and various other roles.
Around 1974 or 1975, as the numbers of boys enrolled in the schools began to dwindle, it was decided that Pack 631 and 603 should combine. We kept the 603 number because it was the oldest of the two. Eventually the Pack was moved to San Lorenzo Community Church because the Schools began to charge for the meetings.
Just wanted to let you know that I'm proud to have been a '603 Cubber' and I'm delighted that you are still so active.
The records the Pack currently has show the Del Rey Dad's Club was the sponsor of Pack 631 in 1965!
Plus, in 1965 the Cub Scout Promise was slightly different than the current version (it's reported that this change was made in 1971):
1965:
I promise to do my best
To duty my duty to God and my county
To be square
And to obey the Law of the Pack Current:
I, (state name), promise to do my best
To duty my duty to God and my county
To help other people
And to obey the Law of the Pack
