Nilgiris, my home

Nilgiris means Blue Hills, home to the Badaga people

These not very tall range of hills, at about 2300 metres above sea level, appear blue to the gazing eye.
Here is where the British escaped to during the heat of the summer.

It is home to the Badaga people, a small, exclusive community of about 150,000 worldwide (yes, worldwide!)

Ootacamund is the main town nestled among about 500 Badaga villages. The Administrative seat of the Madras Presidency was moved to here in the summer months during the British rule in India.

Here's a mega site for lot's more info about Nilgiris and Ooty. Here's another website that is driven by people from Ootacamund.

For more links to sites about Nilgiris, Ooty and the Badagas check the external links off my home page.

Did you know? Snooker was developed by British army officers (including Neville Chamberlain) in the Club at Ootacamund (Snooty Ooty) in the Nilgiri Hills. From:Travellers Survival Kit : India
