First Poole in America

by Russ Poole

Captain Edward Poole

The first Poole in America of which there is record was Captain Edward Poole. He came to this country at the age of 26 in the year of 1635. It is assumed that he was born in 1609 in the locality of Weymouth, England based on the fact that he arrived with Rev. Joseph Hull's Company which came from towns near there and the group founded the town of Weymouth, Massachusetts.

Poole and the others in Rev. Joseph Hull's group had fled from religious persecution in England. Captain Poole lived and aquired property in Weymouth, Massachusetts where he died in 1664.

It is known that Captain Edward Poole married between 1641-1645, Sarah Pinney (Pynney), daughter of John and Protesia (Holdich) Pinney, of Exeter, England. Their children were: Samuel, Isaac, Joseph, Benjamin, John, Sarah, and Jacob.

There has been no connection established between Captain Edward, the first Poole in America, and our line of Pooles which was through Basill of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, about whom the rest of this report is concerned. Captain Edward is mentioned here since he was the earliest Poole that we know of in America - further history and genealogy of this line of Pooles can be found in: "The History of Edward Poole, of Weymouth, Massachusetts" by Murray Edward Poole.
