Descendants of John Martin (Jack) WILLIAMS

WILLIAMS

In Wales, surnames were not in common use until the latter part of the seventeenth century. Welsh families emigrating to the American colonies in the seventeenth century adopted surnames, as we know them, for the first time. Persons using the surname Williams are found in the archives of the earliest settlements of Virginia, where more than 350 persons named Williams appear as headrights in land grants dated prior to 1667. Of the 350 persons about 1/4 of them were named “John Williams”.There were at least four distinct Williams families who descend from the first Williams in Isle of Wight County,Virginia. Earliest names in Isle of Wight County are John Williams, Thomas Williams, Isaac Williams and Lewis Williams. They may have been brothers but there is no definite proof. I have not found a link from any of them to my line of Williams.
