For Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children and Youth
From the early days of civilization, speech and language acquisition have been considered a divine gift.
In the past no attempt was made to explore the causes of deafness or to find ways to alleviate the suffering of deaf people.
They were often doomed to a life of isolationin a world with nocommunication.
Shema is a non-profit association, established in 1968 by parents and volunteers in order to penetrate the "world of silence", and cater to the special needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. This is achieved by education, rehabilitation, advancement and welfare programs leading to integration into the hearing society.
In the Israeli school system there are approximately 3,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing children, who study in three different educational frameworks:
- Individual Integration
In this program, deaf and hard-of-hearing children learn together with hearing children, in regular schools neat their home. - Class Integration
One or more special classes for deaf and hard-of-hearing children within the framework of regular schools. - Special Schools for the Deaf
