James and his wife, Lucy Shell settled in Newberry District, S.C. sometime between 1798 and 1799. They were active in the religious life of their community and prominent in the founding of the Old Tranquil Methodist Church.
After the death of James' wife Lucy (nee Shell), he went to Clinton, S.C., (today, about 20 minutes from Newberry by car) to be with his son Zaccheus, as he, James, was not well. He reportedly had a "shaking disease", probably Parkinsons, or a form thereof. He died in Clinton at his son's home, after about five months, and was buried at the Old Tranquil Cemetery.
James Wright married Lucy Shell in Surry County, Virginia 1/23/1774. Lucy was born 11/27/1757 in Surry County, Virginia. She died 9/27/1824 in Newberry District, South Carolina. She was the daughter of William Shell and Amelia (nee Ellis). Amelia was the daughter of Caleb Ellis and Amelia (nee Shockey). The children of James Wright and Lucy were:
