Thank you so much Sharyn, this is what I needed to confirm or

as best as can be at this point that my John was the son of Thomas

and Mary (Warwick) Cartmill. They have had John in Ohio listed

as the son of Thomas and Mary and all that I had said no, this

rather confirms that he was the son of Thomas and Ann. I would

be grateful for any information that you have gathered on the

Ohio Cartmill's, I actually have very little on them.

Have a great day, you have made mine!

Catawaba is in Clark Co.

Catawaba Station is in Champaign Co.

Catawaba Island is in Ottawa Co.

Clark and Champaign Counties are next door to each other.

Cartmell's were in both counties.

Ann Hite Cartmell, wife of Thomas, Clark Co. will dated Aug 30, 1821 and

probated May 26, 1823 lists the following heirs, dau Rachel, wife of John

Mills; dau Ellen, wife of James Hunter; day Sarah Morris; John Lupton who

md my dau Elizabeth; sons Jacob P; Nathaniel; Joseph; John and Thomas.

(Believe Coshocton John was dead and gone by this time.)

I have a paper somewhere that is supposed to have info on Ann and Tom's son

John. Will have to dig in one of my many unorganized "piles" to find it.

He was supposed to be up in the adjoining county of Champaign.

Daniel asked:

>Did Phil ever get all of the quarterlies Earliene, I can't

I sent Phil copies of the one I had which gave some info on John's, but I

have learned more from you two than anything that is in the quarterly.

I found it and if this is Ann wife of Thomas, then I was right and The John that is

I feel there were more children for this couple I just can't pin them down. I feel that the boys may have gone to Missouri with the other sides of the family. I have worked a lot with DeWitt County and am hoping that they will look deeper for me. Just a quick note Sarah daughter of Julia always said that she was born in Livingston County, Ill as her death certificates states but her marriage record states DeWitt Co. I have just found her mother Rebecca on the 1860 Census in Livingston after John died so maybe there is truth to the rumor....Unlike the Davenports and Coppenbargers there are very few stories if any told of John and Rebecca. They must have been a quiet couple HA! I have been pouring over and over the records you guys are sharing and get more caught up by the minute.

In 1794 he already had a son at least twenty-one. So Junior has to be born by

1773, old John by at least 1752. Looks like Thomas' brother doesn't it? I

still want to account for John's son Thomas. I'm not convinced.

You know, I'm so confused I don't even remember where we got Mary Warwick. I

know I jumped on that because I'd always told Daniel that David's mother was

named Mary. That's why the Ann Hite thing didn't fit.

I agree Daniel. There are so many similarities. But at the same time it just

doesn't fit. I thought Thomas, who married Ann Hite, died in Virginia in

1808. I didn't think he ever came to Kentucky.

I don't know how we'll ever figure out this mess. Holy Cow!

One solution. You're all going to love this. My niece had a dream the other

night about a little old lady in a shop. My niece is into antiques. So it

must have been an antique shop. Anywhooo! The little old lady told her to

look in the box in Mt. Sterling. What do you think? Sound like shades of "The

X Files". I've climbed all over the shelves in Mt. Sterling, but maybe I'd

better go back.

I'm sure this made everyone's day.

================================================================

Hi Guy's;

:I am out on the limb again and like all of us I have been stuck on the Tax/Census lists. After going over and over and unless one of these came from another area, I have come to these conclusions (feel free to correct me): Thomas/Andrew- Thomas is only one with male over 16 1797, 1799, 1800, so John (1801 tax) must be son of Thomas. William shows 1803 and again Thomas is only one with male over 16 so he must be son of Thomas. 1804/1805 Thomas dies. 1805 Andrew II shows, Andrew I is too old to be one who travels to IL. Since Andrew I still shows no male over 16, Andrew II must also be of Thomas and Mary. Again Andrew II would be too young to show 1793 so we must have two Andrews. 1805/1806 Andrew I dies. Samuel shows 1806 b. abt 1785 and would not show as over 16 until 1801 so again he must be son of Thomas.

:So what if Andrew I is the father of Thomas? That would explain no children showing up at this time, and could explain all the relationships. Let me know what you think? Remember that I do not have all the information on these guys so if I make errors just correct me.

Hi Paula, Here is a little more info that I have gleaned from this article.

They call this guy John Sr., son of Nathaniel II. They are vague about when he appeared in Harrison Co.KY , but it was before 1795.

Also says his brother Elijah was married to Mary Coger. Brothers Jacob and Nathan married sisters, Rebecca and Catherine Crist. In Nathaniel II's will, brothers John, Thomas, Nathaniel, Nathan, and Jacob were only left one shilling as they had been given money during his life. There is another vague reference to another John Cartmell/mill of Botetourt Co. VA, who was a Captain in the Rev. Army, but I think this is another branch.

John Cartmell/mill Sr.'s will is dated 12-27-1807 and his wife was Susannah Ward (d. about 1818). John Sr. and Susannah had 3 sons and 7 daughters. John Jr. (b.1772, d.1843 in IN), William (not mine), Thomas, Peggy (Miller), Ellenor, also called Nelly (Wall), Jenny (Barrett), Mary (Wall), Elizabeth, Martha, and Nancy of which nothing is reported.

Another note is that nothing is known of Thomas, althogh he is listed on

the 1800 and 1810 censuses of Montgomery Co. KY, and the 1820 census of Bath Co.

I would like to find out more about him, as another reference that I have

suggests he might be the father of my William.

You can tell Daniel that I am almost certain that my William is not William Hite Cartmill, as I chased that one some time ago and he does not fit. I am still trying to find something on the names that you mentioned.....David, Andrew, and Asa. Maybe when I get more of these CCC Quarterlies, we will learn something.

I am back in town as I am expecting my fifth grandchild at any moment and I will be drafted into babysitting during the process. Don't know if any of this helps, but take a look and let me know. Have a nice Mother's Day, and don't be confused.....this will all work out.

Phil

============================================================

No way is David William's son. He has to be a brother. Thomas, William,

Andrew, John and David. They have to be brothers. William m. Issabelle

Ferguson, ca. 1807 Thomas m. Patsy McDonald 1810. David m. Nancy McDonald,

1813. He's their age. Maybe a little younger. If you take an average of

twenty for marriage, he was born in 1793. And Nancy was listed in the 1850

Census as being born about 1795. That makes sense. So if Thomas was born in

1784, then he and David could very well be brothers

==================================================================

I transcribed a deed last night for Andrew Cartmill buying land from John

Bailey, Jr. in Bath County. Same place, Prickley Ash Creek. John M. Cartmill and Nancy B. Cartmill were witnesses. That's the first time I have found their middle initials. 12 FEB 1827. The will for John Cartmill, Sr. is listed as 1808 in Harrison County. So I doubt this was him. Boy, I wish they had used some names like Joe or Fred. It would be a lot easier to sort them out.

===================================================================

Now John and Asa. I thought Asa was a man's name. I've found John and Rebecca

Hendrix Cartmill. Lord, I have no idea which John that is. I've got a deed

where John and Rebecca, his wife, sold to Thomas Cartmill a tract of land in

Bath County in 1827, for twenty-two hundred dollars. Stuck it to him, didn't

he? Don't ask which John and Thomas. I don't know. That's why I have to get

all these deeds transcribed and in order. I can't tell which are which.

What did you think about the Thomas and Asinah thing? Makes sense, huh?

======================================================================

Made a very quick trip to the Fayette County Courthouse today. Couldn't put

my husband through too much. I got a little bit of information. But I could

probably spend at least two days and nights in there.

I found the estate settlement of Elijah Cartmell 23 MAR 1832. His children

sold 217 acres for $5425.00 to Asa and John Cartmell. Now whether Asa and

John were two of his children and the others sold out to them remains to be

seen. Sounds like quite a plantation for five grand.

Fayette County Deed Book 8 Page 409

====================================================================

Now if you're descended from Robert Cartmill, here's the deal. I found on 13

JAN 1840 the adminitrators of the estate of John Cartmill emancipated Robert

alias Robert Cartmill. You make the call......

==================================================================

Here's what I know.

David M. Cartmill m. Nancy Ann ? (right now I'm leaning toward McDonald).

Children that I know for sure:

1. Mary Cartmill Hamilton(Alexander) Day(Jesse P. Day). Jesse and Mary my

line.

Mary b. ca 1830 m. first Alexander 1849 Bath Co. Second Jesse 1857 Morgan

County, KY.

2. Hugh Hicklin Cartmill b.ca 1829 m. Malinda Jane Peyton ca 1850

3. Frances Cartmill b.ca 1832 m. Daniel Peyton

4. John Cartmill b.ca 1820 m. Lucinda Clemons

5. Eliza Cartmill m. James Payne

6. Thomas Cartmill

7. Sally Cartmill m. Aninias Reed

8. Margaret Cartmill m. ? Blackburn

9. William H. Cartmill m. Lucy ?

I found a deed in Bath County, which was really an estate settlement, where

David had died and his children were named. I think he died around 1835.

The David in the census, I think, is a grandson to Nancy Ann. There was no

David mentioned as being a child to David and Nancy. And I think David died

before he was born.

William, Hugh, Frances and Mary ended up in Morgan County. I have just

discovered the other children so I haven't had time to trace them at all.

I have a deed from Montgomery County where Andrew Cartmill bought property

from Willis Green. This same tract of land is being divided between David's

children. I only assume that Andrew was the father of David. I haven't been

able to find a deed where the land is transferred to David.

It took me a year to find that Mary's father was David. There are very few

Cartmill researchers out there. And the ones I have stumbled over so far

don't know any more than I do. Until you.

You don't know how much I appreciate your taking time to help me. Ain't

genealogists grand?

This is probably so screwed up you won't be able to make heads or tails out

of it, but I tried. If I have't made something clear, just let me know I'll

do my best to clear it up. I'm just so tickled to have someone who knows

about these crazy Cartmills.

Your West Virginia Cuz,

Paula
