Alberta Lure Coursing Association is a club for lure coursing folk and their sight hounds. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the club has been holding sanctioned lure coursing trials since 1980. At the present time we will be holding one weekend trial per year, usually in the fall. For more information on our trials, please e-mail us, ALCA.
The ten sight hounds that are officially recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club for lure coursing are:
Afghan Hounds, Basenjis, Borzoi Hounds, Deerhounds (Scottish), Greyhounds, Ibizan Hounds,
Irish Wolfhounds, Pharaoh Hounds, Salukis and Whippets.
Information.
Lure Coursing is an exciting athletic sport for your dog. However, as with anything in life, to perform at peak ability, the athlete must be in good condition. Poor conditioning can lead to accidents and we want to avoid that at all costs. Lure coursing is an exciting and strenous sport for your hound. There is risk of injury. You, the owner, has to decide what risks your hound may or may not take. The risk and responsibility for your hound is yours.
The owners should educate themselves: after all, you are the trainer of a performance hound. You should know how to train your hound for a specific sport, safely and effectively. It takes time, effort, consistency and willingness on the owners’ part to get the hound into shape. Any hound will love every minute of the training because of the exercise and companionship he is getting from you.
If you are not sure about all this, take in a practice or trial without your hound. Become familiar with what goes on and what is expected from a running hound. Ask questions, how do others train their dogs for competition? Exercise is the key ingredient. There are as many methods of exercise as your imagination can dream up. Do you jog? Take your hound with you. I have a couple of litter sisters that exercise themselves when free running. Most don’t have that type of situation. Read what you can from books, web-sites. I love old greyhound racing books because lots have information laid out for conditioning and exercising in a routine manner. Take these methods and adjust them for your needs.
We want to make this sport as safe and enjoyable as possible for both you and your hound. You also have to help us by realizing there are risks involved in this sport.
Next Lure Coursing Practice is Wednesday, August 19 at Uncas, at 7.00 pm. No certification planned.
This practice will be held at Uncas School grounds rain or shine. Please bring water/shade for your dogs as there is none available on the grounds. It is suggested that you bring crates for your dogs to help keep them under control.
There will be a $5 fee per dog for practices.
Uncas School is located at Range Road 213 and Twp Rd 524. From Sherwood Park, Edmonton, go east on Wye Road until bend in road (Uncas School Sign), turn left, cross railroad tracks, continue on road for about 2 miles, the school will be on your right hand side. Or, continue on to RR 213, turn left, cross the railroad tracks, continue north for about a mile and the school will be on your lefthand side.
A practice and certification runs will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2009 at 10:00 am Uncas School.
To certify, your dog will need to run with another dog, preferably of the same breed and not a "kennel mate". This will be on the required course of 600 yards. Please give some thought to finding or bringing along dogs to help to get your dog certified.
From Lure Coursing Field Trial Rules & Regulations
"7.1 "Eligibility of Hounds"
To be eligible to compete at approved lure coursing field trials a dog must meet the following requirements:
(a) A hound must be tested with another dog, not a kennel mate, preferably of the same breed, and certified running clean by a licensed judge. Hounds must be a minimum of 12 months old prior to being certified, and must run a normal course of 600 yards (548.4m)in order to be certified.
(b) A certificate signed by the judge is given to the owner at the time of the test and must be submitted to the Field Trial Secretary at the dog's first trial.
(c) All dogs must be one year of age on the date of the trial to enter a regular stake and must be registered or eligible for registration in the records of the CKC as herinafter provided."
We will have a CKC judge available for this and the cost is $10.00 (fee good until your dog certifies)
