M-100
![m100.jpg (28810 bytes)](images/m100_small1.jpg)
The core of galaxy M 100 as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope. A spiral galaxy like our own Milky
Way. M 100 is one of the brightest in a rich galaxy grouping called the Virgo Cluster.

Andromeda
![andromeda.jpg (33214 bytes)](images/andromeda_small.jpg)
Our nearest galactic neighbor, Andromeda, is thought to look very similar to the Milky Way.

SOMBRERO
![sombrero.jpg (18096 bytes)](images/sombrero_small.jpg)
The nearby Sombrero galaxy (M 104) has hat-like features thanks to a prominent dust lane, halo of stars and globular clusters.

DINGLEOO
![dingleoo.jpg (35487 bytes)](images/dingleoo_small.jpg)
Hiding behind the gas, dust and stars of our Milky Way, Dwingeloo 1 wasn't discovered until 1994.

For the classic spiral galaxy, you need look no further than the Whirlpool, also known as M 51. The gravity from the smaller galaxy at right is thought to have created M 51's spiral.
