The firehouse was actually built in
1928, but because
of the "Great Depression" the city was not able to
man it.
The building was dedicated in 1932, but remained empty until
June 30,
1937 when Engine 72 was put into service.
On July 8, 1937, Truck 29 was put into
service and housed here until
July 1, 1988, when it was relocated to Engine 51’s
Station.
Engine 72 became a Squrt on November 26, 1971.
Here is an excerpt from email we received:
"From what my father told me - he drove Bn 9 from 1925 'til 1958
when he retired - E72 was in the 9th Bn at the time it was built.
He said that a man was detailed, as a watchman, and had a potbellied
stove on the apparatus floor for heat in the winter until it was opened."
John Matter, Ret. 1979
