Twisted Sunbonnet Sue Swap

Sunbonnet Sue is the block we love to hate! Members of Interquilt thought it would be fun to make blocks that depict Sue doing "nasty" things.

These blocks are the product of a swap on InterQuilt ™ - http://www.needles.com

Sunbonnet Sue as Lizzie Bordon

This block was sewn by Joanne in Oregon at Patchwork Acres. She writes:

My Sue is a representation of a woman named Lizzie Borden who was accused of killing her father and step mother with an axe. This all happened in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892. After a sensational trial she was acquitted in June 1893. The crime was never solved.

I used dark somber colors to represent the time and mood.

Sunbonnet Sue Goes Swimming

This sunbonnet is not following the rules. At least she left her hat on!

This block was sewn by Sue Cunningham from Texas. Sue passed away in February 1999 and her humor, friendship and good wishes will be missed.

Sue Loses her Head

Peggy from Singapore created this headless Sue. Her rendition of this block for a Halloween swap is what started this whole thing!

Sue Reads Playgirl

Janetta created this Block. She writes:

I had several ideas, but only time to execute one...Sue reading Playgirl magazine!

My other ideas were Sue doing phone sex or cyber sex! Sue stealing Girl Scout cookies, or Sue topless at the beach!

Janet Shurts created an older Sue.

She is wearing purple and is modeled after this poem:

I Shall Wear Purple

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves.
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops, and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings,
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain,
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens,
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickles for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear on the street
And set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practice a little now
So people who know me are not too suprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.
