Our Mission:
Mothers
& More is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers through
support, education and advocacy. We address mothers’ needs as individuals and
members of society, and promote the value of all the work mothers
do.
Our mission is based on the following core beliefs:
-
A
mother is more than any single role she plays at any given point in her
lifetime. She is entitled to fully explore and develop her identity as she
chooses: as a woman, a citizen, a parent or an employee.
-
All the work mothers do - whether paid or unpaid - has
social and economic value.
-
All women
deserve recognition and support for their right to choose if and how to combine
parenting and paid employment.
-
All
mothers, all children and all families are unique. We respect the wisdom of each
mother to decide how to care for her children, her family and herself.
-
Mothers have the right to fulfill their
care giving responsibilities without incurring
social and economic penalties.
-
The
transitions women make into and through motherhood are challenging and can be
difficult.
-
Together, mothers are
powerful.
What
We Do:
Serving
over 7,500 mothers in the U.S. and beyond, Mothers & More is a
non-profit membership organization that cares for the caregiver. We
provide a nationwide network of local chapters for mothers who are - by
choice or circumstance - altering their participation in the paid
workplace over the course of their active parenting years. Our chapters
are structured to support a mother as she navigates the challenges of her
daily life - whether she is a full-time family caregiver or struggling to
achieve a better balance between the demands of paid work and family care.
Through
our chapters and other services, we provide opportunities for mothers to
connect with one another in ways that assist them in developing their
unique identities as women and help them move more confidently through the
transitions that affect their family, work and life.
Mothers
& More champions the value and necessity of all mothers' work to our
society - paid and unpaid, within and outside of the home. We strive to
raise awareness about the fact that mothers live and work in a society
that presents significant barriers to their ability to succeed as women,
citizens, parents or participants in the workforce. By uniting mothers to
act on their own behalf, we seek to eliminate policies, practices and
attitudes that unfairly impact mothers as caregivers.
Mothers & More is for ALL
mothers, those who are presently at home full-time, those working
part-time in or outside of their home, and mothers working full-time. Come
to a Chapter meeting and give us a try.
In
accordance with National guidelines, guest/visitors may attend three
chapter meetings before becoming a dues paying member.

Members wanting more information can check out our own newsletter called the Local Page
which
is mailed monthly to all current members and details upcoming activities & events.
All members also receive a subscription to the National Mothers & More
bimonthly publication called the Forum. Members will find the
latest details on our activities nationwide as well as article's which are
enlightening, empathetic and practical in the support of mothering. Check
out our national web site at
http://www.mothersandmore.org for more information.
Our chapter structure provides the following volunteering
opportunities: two
co-leaders, a treasurer, an editor for our newsletter, meeting topic
programming , clothing sale committee (our fundraiser), publicity, membership, care
coordinator, playgroup coordinator, open playgroup coordinator, new moms
playgroup coordinator, hoot/howl coordinator, webmaster, email loop and newsletter distributor.
Most of these positions are on our chapter board and these volunteers
comprise our monthly board meeting. We stager when terms are up on these
volunteer positions so that we are always welcoming new members to help us
out. If you are interested in getting involved, contact Leslie at
DuPageMandM@yahoo.com.
Want to get in on what's happening in our chapter? Chapter Members can
join the DuPage
Chapter Email Loop. You can find out more about the loop
here. The
loop is a great way to stay connected to fellow chapter members
electronically. Lots of the monthly events and activities are highlighted
on the DuPage
Chapter Email Loop. You can find advice on what stroller to buy or what park to play at or how to
handle an unreasonable two-year-old are great topics for our discussion
loop. The discussion loop is our forum for discussing chapter issues
and happenings plus fielding mommy-type questions. Note: solicitations, politicking, chain letters, spam, etc.
are not allowed on either of our
loops. If you are interested in getting on this loop, contact
Leslie at
DuPageMandM@yahoo.com. Additionally, we have another loop, the DuPage
Chapter Email Loop which is an 'information only' email loop. Every
chapter member with an email address will be on the chapter information
list to receive chapter news (meeting changes/cancellations, etc.) in a
timely manner. Additionally, our organization nationally has many diverse
online email discussion groups which provide support and information.

National Loops.
OUR
FUNDRAISER!
Our DuPage Chapter bi-annual fundraiser, our Clothing and Toy Resale, is
coming up on Saturday, March 12, 2005, at the DuPage County Fairgrounds,
and you are invited! We would appreciate your volunteering at this event,
members and non-members alike. Click
here for a Volunteer Form. Volunteering makes you eligible to shop our
presale on Friday night where you can find all sorts of items before the
regular sale the following day on Saturday morning. The Clothing and Toy Resale is a great
way to make new friends as well as find some great quality
merchandise for your little ones at reasonable prices. Plus, a portion of
the proceeds go to a local charity. We had almost 900 people attend our
last sale. For more information, call our
clothing sale hotline at (630)
415-0421 and volunteer today. Support Mothers & More Nationally by using
iShop when you shop online. Click here for more info. For more information about donating to the Mothers & More
organization, click

SOCIAL
Events!
Come join the fun! Our second meeting each month is dedicated to enjoying
some "grown-up time" for Mom's only. Past outings have included pottery
painting, socializing in a cafe, game night, fondue party, movie night and
an ice cream social. Plus, all members are encouraged to attend our annual social events which
include a Holiday Party, Mothers Day Party, Picnic, Mother's Weekend Out and Halloween Party.
The Holiday Party gives our members the chance to meet in a nice
restaurant and relax to a delicious meal along with our "white
elephant" grab bag event to
finish. Our Mothers Day Party gives us the chance to celebrate and honor
each other as Mothers. We usually get together at a members house or a
nice dinner out plus theatre show to nurture our feminine side. These two
events are celebrations that are special evenings designed to pamper
ourselves. Our summer
picnics give everyone the chance to come on out and enjoy the good weather
along with our entire families. The Halloween Party is a great way to let
our little ones dress up and partake of the season. These two events are
designed for the entire family and have been held in the past at a Kane
County Cougar game, Brookfield Zoo, DuPage Children's Museum, and
Blackberry Farm. Our Mother's Weekend Out was held at a Schaumburg hotel
last year and will be in downtown Chicago this year. We strive to have our
social events support our members as mothers and as women. Contact Leslie
for more information on our Social Events at DuPageMandM@yahoo.com.
ADVOCACY!
We offer opportunities to participate in email loop discussions of issues
impacting Mothers. Click here to find out about
National Loops. Get involved in promoting the value of the work that
Mothers do. Help to eliminate policies and attitudes that unfairly impact
Mothers as caregivers. For more
information about Mothers & More advocacy, click
here.
Playgroups!
Our chapter has several thriving playgroups available with
one near you.
Playgroups meet at member's homes or local parks which offers a
comfortable setting for the children to play with each other while
allowing the Moms to get to know one another better. We have several that
meet weekly and biweekly in member's homes. These are arranged by our
Playgroup Coordinator. A bunch of new playgroups started up at the
beginning of this year too!
We also have a playgroup for New Moms that have
children 18 months or younger; older siblings are welcome to attend as
well. These playgroup sessions rotate between members' homes and are a
wonderful opportunity to share ideas and concerns with other Moms who are
going through the same intense phase of Mothering. Also, our New Moms rave
about our care committee which provides meals to members after delivering
their babies.
Finally, we have an open playgroup in which all members
are invited to attend one or two outings per month. Our open playgroup is
our vehicle to seeing what DuPage County has to offer. All the best places
to take kids are visited. Past activities include: a spray park,
gymnastics, ChuckECheese, SciTech, Cosley Zoo, plus tours of such facilities as Danada Equestrian
Center, Krispy Kreme and a fire station.
