Things You Will Need To Submit

First and most important, you will need a GEDCOM formatted file so that it can be processed into a gedpage for others to search. You can make this file using your genealogical software that stores your family information, providing your software has the feature of importing and exporting files. Most of todays software has this feature. To make the file, you will have to refer to your software manual.

Information extracted should only be descendants and siblings of your earliest OWENS/OWEN family member entry. The reason for this is size restriction. Example...I have over 11,000 names in my overall family file, not all are OWENS descendants. My (OWENS) descendants only make up about 800 of these entries. Some are my wife's ancestors, some my mother's side of the family, and so on. I'm sure the OWENS/OWEN researchers are not real interested in other family lineages, that's why we are all looking for an OWENS/OWEN database. If your software does not allow this, don't fret, I can take your complete GEDCOM, import it into my software and pull out just the OWENS/OWEN descendants. If your GEDCOM file is larger than 400,000 bytes, I would ask that you use the US postal service to mail a diskette of the file (e-mail tends to take a long time to transfer large files, and I don't wish to tie up my machine for long e-mail downloads). If you have the ability of "zipping" your GEDCOM file with a program called PKZip, this will compress a large file down to 50-75% of its normal size, making it easily transferred through the e-mail system. If you have a question, please feel free to e-mail me at Keith Owens

Along with your GEDCOM file I will need some required information. I will need your e-mail address, full name and mailing address, and phone number (phone # is optional).

GEDCOM's submitted will be "zipped" and then placed into a download section and made available to people visiting the site. If you DO NOT wish for your GEDCOM to be made available, you must include a statement to that effect "DO NOT INCLUDE GEDCOM FOR DOWNLOAD" with your submission. If you do not include this statement, the default is to make it available. If you would like it removed or find you forgot to include the statement to NOT include the GEDCOM for download, you may do so at any time. Email Keith Owens and let me know about the removal request.

For indexing of the various OWENS/OWEN files I will need the complete name of the earliest ancestor in your file, the date range of the family listing, and the migration route of your family so that I can label the index.

Example:

Thomas Owens (1755-present) migration NC-TN-AR-MO submitted by Keith Owens

Optional Things You May Submit

To help me make your gedpage more personal , here are some optional things you might consider submitting.

An introduction page will be made if you would like. To do this I would ask that you take time to write a few lines about your family, the researching you have put into your findings, where you, yourself, are from or live, how your family might have come to this country and how they may have migrated across this land. You might want to thank the people who have helped you in your research, maybe tell them how sorry you are you bugged them at family reunions or other gatherings (although if you are a true genealogist, you're probably not sorry). You might tell about the libraries, courthouses and archives you have searched through and how long you have been researching. You don't have to say a lot, just introduce yourself.

If you have a homepage of your own you would like me to link, I would gladly do so. I need the complete address for the link (all links will be tested first for connection).

Another optional submission that would enhance your gedpage is scanned pictures of your family. I will incorporate up to four pictures, one of you or you and your immediate family and three of your ancestrial pictures. You can look at some of the submitted files to help you make up your mind if this is an option you might like. Remember, it's an option, you don't have to do this to submit your GEDCOM. If you do decide to attach scanned photos with your submission, please put a description of each picture so that I might add it to the picture. An idea would be to post pictures you have of people for whom you have no names, then ask for anyone to contact you if they have knowledge of the person or picture. Who knows, maybe someone will see them and say "Elmer! Come in here, quick. Isn't that uncle.....?"

How Do I Submit My GEDCOM?

After you have rounded up the things you will need to submit:

GEDCOM file
Name, and mailing address
E-Mail address
Name of earliest ancestor, range date of family, and migration route
Scanned photos and description
(optional)
HTTP link to your homepage (optional)
Introduction for your gedpage (optional)

You may submit the above via E-mail, US Postal Service, or UPS.
If you decide to e-mail (good choice, this is the cheapest and quickest), send attachments and submission to Keith Owens at "keithrayowens@sbcglobal.net".
If you are a JUNO non-internet e-mail customer, you probably know you cannot attach files, you will have to use UPS or postal service.
To use UPS or US Postal Service as a way to submit, you will have to enclose a letter with your information, introduction, and "DO NOT INCLUDE GEDCOM FOR DOWNLOAD" statement. The GEDCOM files and scanned pictures files (in JPG or GIF format) need to be on a 3.5 diskette.

I welcome all OWENS/OWEN researchers to join a growing database of information by submitting their GEDCOM.
Thank you for your consideration and thank you for visiting the site. I invite you to use it as a research tool in your genealogical hunt.

Please allow a couple of weeks for your gedpage to be posted.
