NOTES for Mary Caroline:
The only remaining photo of Mary Caroline gives the appearance of her being a stoic woman, and indeed she suffered through many painful events in her life.
She married John Graff in Harrisburg, PA in 1863 where he was recuperating from a wound he received at the Battle of Antietam in Maryland.
John served as constable of Coaltown, a community outside of Shamokin, PA, and while trying to serve a warrant on a man for selling liquor without a license, he shot the man as the man tried to run away. John was tried for murder in Sunbury and found not guilty; he was murdered himself several years later. It was suspected that the family of the man John shot sought revenge.
Several years after her husband's murder, her youngest son, Benjamin, contracted tuberculous of the spine, which left him paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of his life. He was able to walk, but only while wearing a full body brace.
Mary Caroline associated Benjamin's condition with an accident he had while playing leaf frog when he was about five-years old. On their Civil War pension affiavit, it is noted that "ten years ago was injured in back, has spinal trouble ever since." As a child, this writer was forbidden to play "leaf frog" because of the story of this accident handed down through the family.
Benjamin lived for 12 years after first becoming paralyzed; he died in 1911 just five years before his mother, Mary Caroline, who died in 1916 at age 72.
A letter found in John Graff's pension file written by Mary Caroline Graff is as follows: Phila. Pa. 9/16/1916 Commissioner of Pensions Dear Sir, I hereby certify that I, Mary Caroline Graff, am the widow of John Graff of Co. C, 50" Regt. Penn. Vol. inf.
