Compass The Sasebo Chapter, NSDAR was started in early spring of 1996 after Mrs. Sharon Stine was transferred to the remote US Naval Port of Sasebo, Japan. She had just recently organized a chapter in Virginia and was eager to start another here, where she was, so that she could continue to be an ACTIVE daughter. With this in mind and her very recent experience as an organizing regent she placed an ad in the local base paper looking for women who were already members or were interested in becoming members. By July she had the required 8 members of whom well OVER half were new members, including 4 new JUNIOR members. Mrs. Stine with the assistance of other organizing members put the paperwork in to Organize in October, to which the National Society often answered "What, next October, right?" and to which we kept answering "No, this October". After many phone calls, letters and E-mails sent across the Pacific, on October 19,1996 at 7:30 PM in the Upper Sakata Room of the Harbor View Club, our chapter was organized, opening a new chapter in the History of not only the Units Overseas Division, but NSDAR history as we are the FIRST chapter in Japan and only the second chapter to EVER be organized on a military base. Mrs. Sharon Stine was our Organizing Regent and continues to lead us. Our charter was approved on December 7th, 1996, a date that caused some reflection here in Japan when we first heard it (Dec 7th is the Anniversary of the Attack by JAPAN on the US bringing the US into the War with Japan), and we have been forging ahead ever since. We join chapters in Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, and the United Kingdom!
Our chapter currently has approximately 10 members and is slowly growing. Many of our members are now some distance from Sasebo, Japan, and as such the chapter is run primarily through e-mail and those few members who can attend meetings. We are always looking for new members and associate members, so if interested, please contact Mrs. Stine. We'd love to hear from you!
