"Len's Gone"

Kyung Bok 'Len' Ricks
What do I care about tomorrow?
She's gone!
I watched her go, I helped her go,
I held her while she went.
Oh, God, it hurts!
Just to think, she Lived!

But what a style, what a class,
this lady who did what she did.
In her I saw the sun, the moon,
the essence of Your every list.
The grace You gave to her ensued
the ones who gathered about!

I'm sad, indeed, that even I
can't reach the height of her reflected light.
I saw her there in peace and sleep,
I wondered, when I might go—
this rest seems, yet, so remote!

God help me understand:<\em>Why this one?
Whom You chose to lovingly smote."

HUGH RICKS, ARTIST AND FRIEND:

Hugh Ricks, deceased September 16. 2005

I never met Hugh, but he was my friend. We exchanged e-mail messages for a long time, researching the Ricks family together and sharing information. A few days before and during the period of Hurricane Katrina, Hugh was confined to a hospital in Slidell, Louisiana. After the storm passed that city, Hugh was found wandering around the neighborhood with his hospital IV still in his arm, I am told. He was subsequently evacuated to a hospital in Fort Worth, where he died some days later. His death was a tragic loss, perhaps preventable, but he is no longer with us. This entry is a tribute to the man I knew and Nita mourns. Don Ricks:

"I woke up the Saturday morning (2:30 a.m.) that Rita came in and wrote the following by using a flash light - have never written anything like this before - please put it on your web site for me.

In memory of Hugh Ricks
January 20, 1939 - September 16, 2005

What happened....who do I blame?
Why didn't anyone listen when he spoke of his pain?
The pain that raged in his now frail body......the
pain that burned like an enternal flame
Now he's gone....what can I say?
He went as quick as the blink of an eye!
No one to blame.......oh, yes, it was you and I

Nita Bice"

A later e-mail sent by Hugh's daughter, Emma, corrects some of the above information:

"I'm the youngest daughter of Hugh Ricks. I would like to tell you that my daddy wasn't in a hospital in Slidell and that he wasn't found wandering around. He had gall bladder surgery at Lindy Boggs Hospital in New Orleans on Thursday, Aug. 25. After the levees failed, the patients were left there until the following Thursday. Eventually he was brought to Louis Armstrong and sent to Fort Worth. He was very badly dehydrated. The dehydration caused his liver to fail and he later died.
