To start with I'll present
on this page the "pre-immigration" families and what we know about them.
The earliest known Burckhardt is Jorg "George" Burckhardt and his marriage
to Apollinia Meyer. Jorg and Apollinia were married before 1649 and
were from Niederstoltzingen in the Schwabische region, which in present
day Germany is about half-way between Stuttgart and Munich. They
remained there until sometime in the early 1700's when Johann Dedric fled
to Amsterdam, Holland. It was here his first son, Jacob Burckhardt
was born while awaiting immigration to America. Jacob was a fledgling
"babe-in-arm" arriving in the U.S. aboard the "Loyal Judith" in 1741.
Johann Dedric Burcket was recorded as "Johan Dedrick Buckert" when he was
naturalized as a US citizen
on 11 Apr 1741 in PhiladelphiaCo,
PA. The family settled there and is where Jacob met and married his bride,
Barbara Fisher. Barbara's parents were William Fisher IV and Sarah
Coleman. William was mayor of Philadelphia in 1773 and they were
the grandparents of the founder of the Austin Colony and Texas statesman,
Samuel Rhodes Fisher. It is not known if Johan Dedric and Polly ever
left Philadelphia as they return later to Germany and died there.
Jacob is found in Greenfield Township, Bedford County by 1790 along with
2 of his sons, Samuel and John.
