"But most of all, that quality which makes a poodle a POODLE
is his almost human ability to relate to us...be our friend,
make us laugh, cry, feel pride in his accomplishments,
grieve, and be grateful for their place in our lives."
---Sharon Smith (Poodle L)

Hi, I'm January. My AKC Registered name is "Dhubhne January Shadow". I was born November 25,1994, in Bonita California. You can see my pedigree HERE. I take after both of my Parents. I have some 1st, 2cd and 3rd place ribbons from Dog Shows. I am not showing right now but, my hair is being grown out in order for me to start showing again. Patricia is also interested in Obedience and Agility . I came to Live with Patricia on February 8, 1995.

January and littermatesI was purchased from John and Elizabeth Campbell, who were also the Breeders. Patricia had never seen me, she had talked to Elizabeth several times and then decided to take the chance and purchase me. So on February 8th Elizabeth put me on a plane to New Orleans International airport in Kenner. Patricia and her family were waiting at the airport to pick me up when I arrived. It was exciting and scarry meeting my new family for the first time. We loved each other the second we saw each other. I was still a little scared from that plane ride and being separated from John and Elizabeth all in the same day. But, I recooperated soon and I couldn't have ask for any better family, they are the best. We are all very happy together.

My Mom (Dam) is "Wycliffe Marilla" also known as "Ashley". Ashley and PuppiesShe has 12 points toward her Championship. Tina Yuhl (who is John's Handler) looked at Ashley and felt that she could eventually finish her, but that it was her opinion that Ashley's face (an old-fashioned Wycliffe type) would not appeal to most judges. John, being a judge himself, agreed with her. Ashley lives with John as part of the family. she seemed to miss Elizabeth the most when she died. Only now is Ashely back to her evil, playful self. She had Gastric Torsion about a year and one half ago requiring surgery, but has recovered completely. She has been on canned Iams Lamb and rice since her surgery and thrives well on that diet alone. (one 14 oz.can AM and one 14 oz.can PM)

Ok, now to explain about the Old Fashioned Wycliffe Head. John thinks that the breeders & exhibitors have lost track of the original function of the Standard Poodle. Patricia has a tendency to agree with him. The vogue in heads for the last 30 years has been what Joy Tongue called "shark faces". These heads would never have the jaw stamina to plunge onto the cold dark waters and retrieve a large bird. Ashley Ashleyhas a proper, functional head which is a little shorter in length of muzzle and has some "cheekiness" (interpret that muscleing for jaw strength) She has good length of neck (not always found with a moderate muzzle length); average front , Standard Poodles are not noted for a well-angulated, properly placed front end; moderately angulated rear ( well balanced for the front, which makes for a smooth well coordinated overall movement); level topline; level tail-set with a good angulation of the croup; good tail carriage (not drooping and not curled over th back); nice tight, well-padded feet and an outstanding temperament. She is extremely bright. While everyone else is standing around wondering, she has already sized up the situation and decided what to do.

Now to tell you a little about Bloat torsion. The mode of occurrence for bloat/torsion has not been determined. Some say that it is due to poorly prepared (or selected) diet and some (without evidence) say that there is a genetic connection. To my knowledge, research has not identified the cause. Surgery: The distressed animal has (after determining that gastric torsion is truly the correct diagnosis, usually by X-Ray after failing to obtain relief by passing a stomach tube down the throat) then the "belly" is incised and the afflicted area untwisted and re-positioned. A further procedure is usually performed by suturing the affected area to the stomach wall. More likely than not, the spleen has ruptured and has to be removed. A nasty episode, but one that USUALLY prevents torsion reoccurrence, but not bloat. An indicator that diet may play some part in preventing bloat is that careful attention to well softened dry food by soaking with boiling water and letting stand for about 10 minutes (food of good quality) or a high quality canned food given moderately morning and evening usually suffices.

Elizabeth and SeymourMy Father (Sire) is "Ch. Dhubhne Turning Point" also known as "Seymour". SeymourHe lives with Jim Edmunds in Tennessee, outside of Knoxville and lives a real "dogs" life. John has his semen stored at the U. of Tenn. and has a couple of A One breedings lined up for him.
