Obituary. Mitchell Commercial. Oct. 18, 1917.

Another Old Soldier Gone. Uncle Elijah Evans, who has been sick for some time, died at his home in North Mitchell at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. He was a veteran of the Civil War, and his death removes another from the ever thinning ranks of the old patriots. Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Stearns of the Presbyterian Church, and the remains were buried in the Mitchell cemetery. For years "Uncle Lige" has been a familiar figure on the streets of Mitchell and we are going to miss him. All of the children were here for the funeral.

Obituary. Mitchell Tribune. Oct. 25, 1917.

Letter to the Editor:

Wrecking of Hamer Cemetery Angers Writer

Lowell R. Davis

Editor of the Tribune

Dear Sir:

I noticed in my Tribune the wrecking of the Hamer Cemetery at Spring Mill Park. I hated to read that account as I have one brother and two sisters buried there. My grandfather, Thomas Hamer and his brother, Hugh, ran that mill before there were any railroads. My mother was born and raised in the Thomas L. Hamer home. All my people on my mother's side are buried in the Hamer Cemetery. My father was a stone mason and made the markers for my brother and my two sisters' graves. My mother was 14 years old when they built the old O. & M. Railroad. She said the men building the road would come down to the Hamer Cave to get water for the men working on the track. I noticed where Hugh Hamer's marker was broken in two different places. I can't think of anyone that would be mean enough to go into any cemetery and destroy markers like they did there. I only hope that the law can run them down. I am enclosing 25 cents for postage. Please send me two of last week's Tribunes, as I want to send them to my people who live out of town. Thank you.

Albert P. Evans

Washington Herald, Washington, Indiana, June 3, 1924. Evans Boy Injured.

Robert Evans, the 9 year old son of Albert Evans of 211 Front Street suffered serious injuries while playing Monday afternoon. The boy backed into a bush and fell backward. A sharp twig of the bush penetrated through the flesh and at first it was thought that the injury did not amount to anything. A short while afterwards the lad showed signs of internal injuries and a physician was summoned. Examination revealed that the stick had penetrated through the flesh, the gall bladder, and into the abdomen. The boy was taken in the Gill ambulance to the Daviess County Hospital about 6 o'clock where an operation was performed. His condition today is reported serious.

Attempt to Evade Capture by Suicide

Logansport, Ind., Sept 7. Unable to persuade Mrs. Avanella Ruth Klooz, a 35 year old widow, to marry him, Roy Stanberry killed her shortly before noon today, then attempted suicide. The 42 year old automobile salesman, taken to Cass County hospital whimpering that he did not want to live, underwent an operation late today for removal of a bullet from his chest and surgeons prepared to administer a blood transfusion to bolster his ebbing strength. Officers learned that Stanberry had pursued Mrs. Klooz with petitions of marriage since her husband, a mussel digger, drowned in the St Joseph River July 8. Yesterday they learned the couple quarreled bitterly and Stanberry was ordered not to return to the Klooz home. He made repeated unsuccessful efforts to see the widow and asked a neighbor to interecede for him. Finally, officers were told , he forced his way into the Klooz house with drawn revolver, brushed aside 15 year old Mary Catherine Klooz and fired three bullets at Mrs. Klooz as she crouched on the dining room floor, begging for mercy. One shot hit an artery in her neck. A cartridge snapped at the daughter, misfired, and then Stanberry picked up his victim, carried her to his car, and transported her to the hospital, where she died of internal hemorrhages. He left the hospital when a police squad car drove up and he fled before them at eighty miles an hour down State Road No. 25. The pursuing police saw the car swerve and retard as Stanberry pitched a gun out of the window. They found him with a bullet wound in the chest which had puntured his lung. At Cass County Hospital Stanberry confessed the shooting in the presence of Coroner M.D. Steward and the police. Prosecutor Robert ?vid said he would seek a first degree murder indictment from the Grand Jury.

Slaying Avenged

Mrs. Ruth "Babe" Klooz.

Kokomo, Ind, April 16 (AP)

Sheriff George Scott prepared today to take Roy Stanberry, 41, Logansport used car salesman, to the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City to begin serving a two to twenty-one year sentence for the slaying of Mrs Ruth "Babe" Klooz, 35, his widowed sweetheart, in her home at Logansport last September. Stansberry was convicted by a jury of six men and six women in the Howard Circuit Court last night.

Obituary. Bedford Times. Sept 9, 1936.

The body of Mrs. Avanella Ruth Klooz, 35 year-old widow, slain Monday at her home in Logansport by Roy Stanberry, 42 year-old automobile salesman, who failed in a subsequent attempt to end his own life, will be brought to Mitchell Thursday afternoon for burial in the Mitchell cemetery, according to announcement received by the Haverly mortuary at Mitchell, which will have charge of the burial. The funeral party will journey to Mitchell by motor route following services arranged for 10am Thursday at Logansport. Mrs. Klooz, a native of Mitchell, was before her marriage Miss Avenella Ruth Evans, daughter of Charles and Madge Boyd Evans. Both parents, now separated, survive, and her mother, Mrs. Madge Frank, resides in Cincinnati, Ohio. She visited in Mitchell recently. The father's place of residence is not known. He was reported in Logansport following his daughter's death... Officers learned that Stanberry had pursued Mrs. Klooz with petitions of marriage since her husband, a mussel digger, drowned in the St. Joseph River July 8. Sunday, they learned, the couple quarreled bitterly and Stanberry was ordered not to return to the Klooz home... Finally, officers were told, he forced his way into the Klooz house ... fired three bullets at Mrs. Klooz ... picked up his victim, carried her to the hospital, where she died of internal hemorrhages...

Borrowed Car Crashes; Runaway Girl, 18, Killed.

An 18-year-old Indianapolis girl who ran away from home Tuesday in her parents' car with her 16-year-old boyfriend was injured fatally yesterday near Winesburg, Ohio, when the auto grazed a parked car, then rammed a tree along U.S. 62. Sheriff James Taylor of Holmes County, Ohio, said the car was traveling southeast on U.S. 62 when the girl evidently fell asleep at the wheel. Her companion suffered a shoulder injury in the crash. The victim, Miss Anna Joyce Evans, 1930 North Alabama Street, only child of Mr. & Mrs. Jesse M. Evans, and her companion, Ronald L. Spencer, a son of Mrs. Bertha M. Spencer, 191 North Routiers Drive, had been the object of a search since Tuesday when police were told she had taken her parents' car without their knowledge. Mrs. Spencer told Indiana State Police she had been told by friends of the young couple that they were heading for Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Spencer said they were not intending to marry but had just decided to take a trip. They had driven to Niagara Falls and were returning to Indianapolis when the accident occured, Mrs. Spencer said. Mrs. Evans told police her daughter, a 1963 graduate of Shortridge High School, had been active in work at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theater and had met Spencer while working there. Both young Spencer and Miss Evans had appeared in the theater's productions, although she worked primarily in the theater's prop department. Mrs Evans told police that although Miss Evans and young Spencer had known each other for some time, she did not believe they were serious about each other. Her mother said Miss Evans was planning to enter Indiana University classes here this fall. She wanted to become a schoolteacher, Mrs. Evans said. Spencer was taken to Pomerance Hospital at Millersburg, Ohio, where he was reported in satisfactory condition. Funeral services for Miss Evans are pending at Flanner and Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary. Survivors include the parents and a half-sister, Mrs Donna Parnum, all of Indianapolis.

Reunion main story

By MARY G. JOHNSON

Hamer Family

While the Quinn reunion was under way, the Hamer family was holding a reunion in Spring Mill's Donaldson Shelter House. Priscilla Hamer Knight, 89, one of the oldest ... David Padgett, 51, Carmel, a descendant of Thomas Hamer, said "Everybody goes off in their different direction. You graduate from college. You don't bring it back home. You go off and do what's best for your new family." Padgett comes to be in Spring Mill and to be with his family. "That's the drawing card for me: my heritage with Spring Mill and the family meetings that we have and talk about yesteryear. It's still a thrill to walk through the park and just kind of get a feel, a sense of what it was like to live here 100 years ago."...
