Descendants of Nancy Hamer
Generation No. 1
1. NANCY3 HAMER (THOMAS2, THOMAS1)1,2 was born October 15, 1797 in Northumberland County,
Pennsylvania, and died 1890 in Unknown location. She married (1) LEMUEL JENNINGS Abt. 1816 in New York, son of LEMUEL JENNINGS and JANE WHITE. He was born Abt. 1792 in Ontario County, New
York, and died Abt. 1820. She married
(2) ROSWELL CROFOOT February 28, 1822 in New York. He was born Abt. 1790 in New York, and died
Abt. 1830 in New York.
Notes for NANCY HAMER:
Nancy Hamer seems to
have married Lemuel Jennings in 1816 and died in 1890, according to the DAR
record of Louise R. Riley; she married Roswell Crofoot in 1822, according to
Clarice Evans DeWreede.
Livingston County, New
York, was formed from Ontario County and Genesee County in 1821. Births or deaths in this family before that
time were Ontario County; births or deaths after 1821 were Livingston
County. Big Tree is the former name of
Geneseo.
Family histories
report her to be the village schoolteacher at Spring Mill after the death of
her second husband, Roswell Crofoot. Her name is sometimes spelled Nancy
Crowfoot. She came between 1830 and
1840, since Charles was born in 1830, and Euphemia was married in Indiana in
1833. She was called "Aunt Nancy".
She was teacher to Almira Hamer Lucas, who was left handed. Aunt Nancy tried to make Almira right
handed. Almira remembered this even in
her old age. Family histories report
Nancy as moving to Louisville, Kentucky, and remarrying. They also report her death as 1890.

Indianapolis Journal
Article Citation: 4-22-1846 p 3, c 4, DIED.
At Sinking Spring, near Redding, Lawrence County, Indiana, April 11th,
at 5 minutes before 10 o'clock A.M., Euphaemia
Nugent, wife of John R. Nugent, aged 28 yars, 6 months, and 22 days. Mrs. Nugent was naturally of a cheerful
disposition, and well calculated to render her and all about her happy. She
always enjoyed remarkable good health, until the latter part of last August,
when she was prostrated by a fever, from which she never recovered. The severe and protracted illness which
deprived her cheek of its usual glow, undermined her vigorous constitution,
consigned her to an early grave, she bore with becoming patience. Previous to her last sickness she had often
been the subject of religious impressions, and sometimes almost persuaded to be
a christian. During the early part of
her confinement she became deeply impressed with the importance of a change of
heart in order to salvation. She felt herself
to be a sinner against God and mourned over the former pride of her heart which
had prevented her from being a follower of Christ. She felt conscious of a changer of her views respecting religion
and desired to live to manifest her love of Christ, but an all wise providence
had otherwise determined. She died in the very prime of life, leaving an affectionate husband, seven children, a
beloved mother, and a numerous circle of friends to mourn her loss.

Willoughby was born in
1843 in Lawrence County Indiana and died in 1871 in Lawrence County. Willoughby
served in the Civil war on the Union side for Indiana:
Name: Willoughby Nugent
Enlistment Date: 19
October 1864
Distinguished Service:
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Side Served: Union
State Served: Indiana Unit Numbers: 576
Service Record:
Enlisted as a Private on 19 October 1864
Substitute in Company
U, 26th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 19 October 1864.
But, as I was
researching on the internet, I found this note that was sent to a site where
the Nugent ancestry was posted:
1871/02/06~ Willoughby Nugent, a drunken desperado, who
had boasted of seducing 17 girls in Lawrence County, Indiana, was swung up and
horse-whipped nearly to death at Mitchell, the other day, by a party of avenging
citizens.
Willoughby's parents
were John R Nugent and Euphemia Jennings.
John R was born on Oct 5, 1811 in Clark County, Indiana and died Feb 22,
1880 in Lawrence County, Indiana.
Euphemia was born on Sept. 19, 1817 in Livingston County, New York and
died April 11, 1846 in Lawrence County Indiana. John and Euphemia were married on April 23, 1833 in Lawrence
County Indiana.
This is my gr gr Aunt
Mattie Ackerman Nugent's in laws. (Thomas L. Nugent was her husband, the 2nd
cousin of Willoughby) Aunt Mattie was
my Grandmother Hazel's Aunt from Harrison County, Indiana. I was just amazed when I found these
stories.... He had Distinguished Service in the Civil War, and then was beaten
to death in civilian life because of the crimes that he committed.

JOHN RILEY, attorney
at law, was born in Harrison County, Ohio, September 19, 1824, and is one of
ten children born to William and Nancy (Ewing) Riley. He was reared in his native State, educated in the common schools
and began when a young man to teach school at the same time studying both law
and medicine. In October, 1845, he
married Rebecca Agnew, who died during the summer of 1848, leaving one
son--Clinton C.-to survive her. The
fall of 1849, Mr. Riley removed to Lawrence County, Ind., locating near the
present town of
Mitchell, where he continued to reside until 1864, when he was elected County
Clerk. He moved to Bedford, served one
term of four years, was re-elected to a second term and served in all eight
years, after which he resumed the practice of law, associating himself in
partnership with George O. Iseminger at Bedford. This partnership has since continued, and is recognized as one of
the leading legal firms of Bedford.
August 14, 1851, Mr. Riley was united in marriage with Nancy J.,
daughter of John R. Nugent, and the following named of their nine children are
yet living: John R., Euphemia (Mrs.
Dunn), Mary (Mrs. Erwin), Sarah A., Nancy J. and Louise. As a member of the
Masonic brotherhood, Mr. Riley has several times served as Worshipful
Master. In early years he was a Whig in
politics, but on the
death of that party,
joined the American party, and in 1860 was an Elector for the Bell and Everett
ticket. When the war broke out he
unhesitatingly united with the Republicans, and has since been an active worker
in that party. "History of Lawrence, Orange and Washington Co.'s, Indiana

BEDFORD DEMOCRAT -
BEDFORD, INDIANA - FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1899
HOUSTON'S MAP - Of
Lawrence County the Most complete Ever Made. City Engineer Gus C. HOUSTON
recently finished a map of Lawrence county that is the most complete of its
kind that was ever made and will be of value to every person in the
county. For several months Mr. HOUSTON
had been at work on the map, which is now in the hands of the publisher and
will be ready for sale in a few days. The map will show all land lines, farm
lines, residences school houses, churches, cemeteries, mills, quarries,
railroads, switches, urnpipes(turnpikes?), gravel roads, kaolin banks, caves,
rivers, creeks, branches, bridges, fords, ferries, state and county roads,
geological formations and Indian boundary lines. The map will also show many things of a historical nature, such
is(as) the location of Palestine, Redding, Liberty and other places long since
abandoned, many old landmarks, such as old roads long forgotten, old water
mills, old house mills, old
township and county
boundary lines, Indian trails, Indian fords, Indian mounds and camping grounds,
old ferries and many other things of
interest to the
public. It is a map that should be in
every school in the county and will be invaluable to real estate men, lawyers
and others. In fact, there is hardly a
freeholder in the county to whom the map will not be of value.

Letter to the Editor:
Wrecking of Hamer Cemetery Angers Writer
Lowell R. Davis -
Editor of the Tribune
Dear Sir:
I noticed in my
Tribune the wrecking of the Hamer Cemetery at Spring Mill Park. I hated to read that account as I have one
brother and two sisters buried there.
My grandfather, Thomas Hamer and his brother, Hugh, ran that mill before
there were any railroads. My mother was
born and raised in the Thomas L. Hamer home.
All my people on my mother's side are buried in the Hamer Cemetery. My father was a stone mason and made the
markers for my brother and my two sisters' graves. My mother was 14 years old when they built the old O. & M. Railroad. She said the men building the road would
come down to the Hamer Cave to get water for the men working on the track. I noticed where Hugh Hamer's marker was
broken in two different places. I can't
think of anyone that would be mean enough to go into any cemetery and destroy
markers like they did there. I only hope that the law can run them down. I am enclosing 25 cents for postage. Please send me two of last week's Tribunes,
as I want to send them to my people who live out of town. Thank you.
