Salem, Nov. 29th, 1843

Dear Father, I have declined coming home so soon as I anticipated for two reasons, one because the roads are so very muddy, the other because my studies are so hard that they employed all my time; but in about two weeks I think they will become easyer and then I shall be at home; if you can send me some money you will certainly oblige for I have not got money to buy my next week's candles. Mr. Connell is going to send down shortly for some flour and when he sends the man that I am boarding with he will send for a barrell. he says that he will take flour from you all winter if he can get it. Write for I am anxious to hear from you all. Your son, J.R. Hamer

Claysville, Indiana November 1, 1843

J.R. Hamer

Dear Sir, I thought it proper to address a few lines to you as to the respect of going to Salem to school. You can learn as much there as you can at Bloomington or Greencastle. And you would be nearer home and it would be more satisfactory to me as you know that I am fondly thine own. And perhaps if you go off far I may never again see you. But we hope for the better but time flies swiftly and we know not how long we have to stay with those we hold most near and dear. So farewell till my next. Please write. Yours xe, M.E. Lemon

Obituary. Vincennes Sun-Commercial. Aug 8, 1933.

George Hamer Fatally Hurt In Auto Crash. George A. Hamer, aged 76, retired yardmaster for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, died at 10:30 Tuesday morning at the Good Samaritan Hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Patoka late Monday afternoon. His death was the second from automobile accidents since Sunday. Mr. Hamer was driving his automobile on U.S. Highway 41 near Patoka when he lost control of the machine which crashed into a telephone pole. He suffered severe head injuries which resulted in his death. He was brought to the Good Samaritan Hospital at 6 o'clock shortly after the accident. Mr. Hamer was retired by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company on a pension two years ago after fifty years of service for the company. He began his railroad career as a brakeman and was later an engineer. With advancing age he gave up his regular runs and was promoted to yardmaster. The only known surviving relative is a sister living at Bedford. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed.

Obituary. Bedford Times. Aug 8, 1933.

Brother of Mrs. Lucas Expires. Gus A. Hamer, Native of Lawrence County is Auto Accident Victim. Mrs. Myra Lucas, 1703 "O" Street, was shocked beyond expression this morning to receive a message that her only brother, Gus A. Hamer, had been fatally injured in an automobile wreck last night and passed away this morning about 10 o'clock in the hospital at Vincennes. Accompanied by her cousin, J. Frank Hamer, Mrs. Lucas motored to Vincennes this afternoon. Gus A. Hamer was a scion of one of the oldest and most influential families of Marion Township. He was born over seventy-five years ago to Mr. & Mrs. Hugh Hamer, Jr. at Spring Mill, now the site of Spring Mill State Park. It will be remembered that his grandfather, Thomas L. Hamer, was one of the first owners of the old Spring Mill grist mill, in partnership with his brother, the late Col. Hugh Hamer. His young boyhood was spent in this historic environment... Mr. Hamer has visited quite often the past few years in the home of his sister in this city...

Vincennes Sun-Commercial. Aug 9, 1933.

Deaths. Hamer, George A., died Tuesday morning. Funeral services will be held at Gardner's funeral chapel, Thursday, 9am. Rev. Bell officiating. Burial at Hamer Cemetery.

Hamer Rites Held. Vincennes Sun-Commercial. Aug 11, 1933.

Funeral services for George Hamer were conducted from the Gardner Chapel Thursday morning at 9 o'clock, the Rev. H.M. Bell officiating. The body was taken to Spring Mill Park for burial in the Hamer Cemetery. Rev. Raymond O'Haver had charge of the cemetery services. Pall bearers were: W.C. Killey, Roland Hess, Ray Kimmel, Ed Fritchie, L.H. Mellman, and Lester Soden.

Hamer Funeral Held Thursday. Bedford Times. Aug 11, 1933.

Remains Laid to Rest in Family Burial Plot at Spring Mill State Park.

Gus A. Hamer came home yesterday, not as formerly when he was in a genial mood and happy to be back at his native hearth, but in his last long sleep, that he might be laid away in the bosom of the earth that holds his parents and other loved ones in the old Hamer cemetery on the hill overlooking Spring Mill where he was born and his happy childhood was spent. The formal funeral services for Mr. Hamer were held in the Gardner Chapel in Vincennes Thursday morning at nine o'clock and they were largely attended by relatives and friends, among whom were many with whom he had been associated in his fifty five years of railway service. A wealth of floral offerings surrounded his bier. Rev. Bell, pastor of the Baptist Church, of which the deceased was a member, impressively conducted the services, in which he paid tribute to the deceased who had lived such a full and profitable life. The members of the Masonic Lodge attended in a body and served as pall bearers. They accompanied the remains to the Hamer cemetery where they gave their beautiful funeral ritualistic services. Many relatives from the whole countryside awaited the funeral party at the Hamer cemetery. Rev. R.R. O'Haver of Mitchell conducted the short services at the grave after which burial was made in the family burial plot. Mrs. Myra Lucas of this city, only sister of Mr. Hamer, and the last of the family, and her son, Edgar Lucas of Indianapolis, were in the funeral party that accompanied the remains from Vincennes.

Kate Jeffries, widow of Harry Jeffries, was housekeeper for Gus Hamer. She inherited the house on Fairground (Washington) Avenue in 1935. It passed on to her daughter, Jean Jeffries Duesterberg, after the death of Kate Jeffries.

In the probate of George Augustus Hamer there was a claim by someone named Simpson. The attorneys Smith and Smith handled the claim. An investigation was made on the claim by E.A. Acker and paid for by the estate. There were also fees paid for general services and a compromise decision to Clark and Brooks, Attorneys.

Another Old Soldier Gone. Uncle Elijah Evans, who has been sick for some time, died at his home in North Mitchell at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. He was a veteran of the Civil War, and his death removes another from the ever thinning ranks of the old patriots. Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Stearns of the Presbyterian Church, and the remains were buried in the Mitchell cemetery. For years "Uncle Lige" has been a familiar figure on the streets of Mitchell and we are going to miss him. All of the children were here for the funeral.

Letter to Harrison Hamer from niece, Florence Hamer. Copy in possession of Mary Evans McMullen.

Indianapolis, June 11th (Between 1873 and 1879)

Uncle Harrison, Angeline Evans wants $8.00 on a chain I bought a long while ago ... Nerve Wood wrote the letter asking for the money ... Give my love to Aunt Ann. Tell her I would like to see her ... And give Mrs. Evans the money and oblidge. Florence

His full name is Henry Harrison Hamer. Both Harrison and Ann go by their second names. He was administrator of his brother's (Thomas L. Hamer, Jr., d. 1873) Probate from 1873 to 1879 as found in the Lawrence County probate records. Family tradition says he was killed by robbers on a business trip. He disappears from Lawrence County Indiana Census in 1880. He sold his land and moved, according to the land records. He is found in Kansas, Missouri, Colorado, and Idaho, according to the census and the Civil War pension papers.

Goodspeed's County History has H.H. Hamer a Master Mason of Lawrenceport Lodge #543 of A.F.& A.M. (Masons) in 1877. J.F. Hamer was also a mason. G.W. Hamer was an officer.

Information was found in the old records of the Lawrenceport Lodge No. 543 of Freemasons, for a member by the name of H.H. Hamer... I am assuming that H.H. Hamer is Henry Harrison Hamer. Lawrenceport Lodge No. 543 was located in Lawrenceport, Lawrence Co., Indiana. The Lodge was chartered in 1877 and the charter was annulled in 1888. There was no historical file available for the lodge. H.H. Hamer entered apprentice 1/10/1877; Fellow craft 4/11/1877; Master Mason 5/9/1877; suspended for non-payment of dues 7/30/1879; reinstated 5/19/1880; received Demit Certificate on 5/19/1880, and left. Two other Hamers left this Lodge in 1880.

Hower Anna P. Henry H. 3504 8/13/85 Filing date 7/5/86 Granted

Anna P. Hamer, plaintiff, vs. Henry H. Hamer, defendant> In the District Court, State of Kansas, Franklin County. Filed Aug 13, 1885, Number #3504

Petition: The plaintiff says that she now is and for more than one year last past has been an actual resident in good faith of the County of Franklin, State of Kansas, that she was married to the defendant May 26, 1864, and has since hiterto conducted herself toward the plaintiff as an affectionate and faithful wife, but the defendant has been for more than five years last past an habitual drunkard and has during all of said period wholly failed and neglected to contribute anything whatever toward the support of plaintiff or of their children. The defendant more than one year since, without any cause therefore wholly abandoned the plaintiff and has since hitherto remained continuously absent from the plaintiff. There was born to the plaintiff and defendant during their cohabitation two children of whom one, Cora Hamer, is of the age of fourteen years. Wherefore the plaintiff prays judgment against the defendant for divorce and for the custody of their said child, Cora Hamer.

State of Kansas, Franklin Co. In the district cour for Said County. Anna P. Hamer vs. H.H. Hamer. State of Kansas, Franklin County>ss. Anna P. Hamer being by me first duly sworn says, "I am the plaintiff in this action. I do not know the place of residence or Post Office address of the defendant, and cannot ascertain the same by any means within my power. ss/ Anna P. Hamer. Subscribed and sworn before me this 18th day of August 1885. I.N.Boccourt, Notary Public.

State of Kansas, Franklin County.

Anna P. Hamer being first duly sworn says: "I am the plaintiff in the foregoing petition, the statements of said petition are true, the cause of action therein set forth are just and by reason of my poverty am unable to give security for costs. Said action is brought to obtain a divorce, the defendant is a nonresident of the State of Kansas and service of a summons cannot be made upon him within the State of Kansas, so help me God." ss/ Anna P. Hamer

Subscribed and sworn to before me this 18 day of August, 1885. ss/ I.N. Boccaurt, Notary Public

State of Kansas, Franklin County. In the district court for said county. Anna P. Hamer, H.H. Hamer, Number #3504.

And now towit this 5th Day of July, A.D. 1886, this case was duly called and thereupon the plaintiff appeared in person and by Michene & Surat, her attorneys, but the defendant came not, but was in default, and the court having examined the proof of service of summons upon the defendant by publications and having in all things approved the service the court considered all to be heard and the court after hearing the evidence and argument of the counsel doth find for the plaintiff. It is therefore ordered and adjudged that the bonds of matrimony hitherto existing between the plaintiff and the defendant, he and the same is hereby dissolved and that the plaintiff be forever divorced from the defendant and that she, the said plaintiff have the care and custody of the said minor child.

Interment was in the Hamer family cemetery at Spring Mill Park last Monday. Mrs. Lucas had visited in Anderson annually since 1915, until last year, having been bedfast since Jan. 26, 1947, when she sustained a fractured hip in a fall. Mrs. Lucas and Mrs. Padgett were the only two surviving grandaughters of the late Thomas L. Hamer, who with his brother, Hugh Hamer, came to Indiana and built the mill at Spring Mill in 1827. The mill continued the property of the Hamer family until 1872. Mrs. Lucas, during her visits to Anderson, recalled many of her early memories, including the times her grandfather hid fugitive slaves from the South before the Civil War.

Letter from Charles Hamer

Eldorado.

Sunday, Dec 14, 1879

Well, Grandma & Nerve & Laura & all in particular,

This Sunday morning finds all tolerably well. Elsie is a little cross this morning. She has had good health and grows very fast. We hope you are all well. The weather is very cold out here and the wind blows hard. You must excuse me for not writing sooner, but I was so fixed that I could not write any sooner. I wrote to Mother but have not heard from there. I wrote as you said. I did not say any thing of the past. I told her who I was and where I was at and I thought it my duty to write to her. I can't help but think that she will write to me if she is there. I went to the Post Office and got a list of all the post offices that there are in Wisc., but that name was not there. Will Brady is such a liar that a person can hardly believe him. That you know. But I am in hopes that it is so. I never thought of Mira's baby when I spoke of Elsie's being the only great grandchild that Grandma has. How old is Mira's baby? Has she only got one? Tell Laura that I have got the sweetest baby that ever lived. The reason that it is so sweet is because it looks like me and she will know that it must be sweet. You shall have Elsie's picture as soon as the weather gets a little warmer. We hate to take her out in this cold weather for she stops up in the head so bad that she nearly smothers to death and it don't do a bit of good to grease her nose and head. I don't know what to do for her sometimes to keep her from smothering to death. I want Grandma to tell me what to do. Don't tell me to use goose grease for there is not a damn goose in the country, let alone grease. Tell Laura that I will write to her some of these days and send her the baby's picture. Tell her that a great deal of my troubles will be little ones for I think it is such a nice thing to be called papa. Oh, it's nice to be a father and don't you wish me joy? Tell Charley to come out this winter and we will go hunt some deer and turkeys. I will write to you as soon as I get a letter from Mother. And if I don't get one I will write as soon as I get one from you. So I will bring my letter to a close hoping to hear from you soon.

My love to one and all. I still remain,

Charles Hamer, of Mitchell, Indiana.

Please write as soon as you get this and give me all the news.

Letter to the Editor:

Wrecking of Hamer Cemetery Angers Writer

Lowell R. Davis

Editor of the Tribune

Dear Sir:

I noticed in my Tribune the wrecking of the Hamer Cemetery at Spring Mill Park. I hated to read that account as I have one brother and two sisters buried there. My grandfather, Thomas Hamer and his brother, Hugh, ran that mill before there were any railroads. My mother was born and raised in the Thomas L. Hamer home. All my people on my mother's side are buried in the Hamer Cemetery. My father was a stone mason and made the markers for my brother and my two sisters' graves. My mother was 14 years old when they built the old O. & M. Railroad. She said the men building the road would come down to the Hamer Cave to get water for the men working on the track. I noticed where Hugh Hamer's marker was broken in two different places. I can't think of anyone that would be mean enough to go into any cemetery and destroy markers like they did there. I only hope that the law can run them down. I am enclosing 25 cents for postage. Please send me two of last week's Tribunes, as I want to send them to my people who live out of town. Thank you.

Albert P. Evans

Washington Herald, Washington, Indiana, June 3, 1924. Evans Boy Injured.

Robert Evans, the 9 year old son of Albert Evans of 211 Front Street suffered serious injuries while playing Monday afternoon. The boy backed into a bush and fell backward. A sharp twig of the bush penetrated through the flesh and at first it was thought that the injury did not amount to anything. A short while afterwards the lad showed signs of internal injuries and a physician was summoned. Examination revealed that the stick had penetrated through the flesh, the gall bladder, and into the abdomen. The boy was taken in the Gill ambulance to the Daviess County Hospital about 6 o'clock where an operation was performed. His condition today is reported serious.

Washington Herald, June 10, 1924. Injuries Fatal to Robert Evans. Young Evans Boy Dies at 5:25 This Morning from Injuries Suffered While at Play. Robert Evans, the 9 year-old son of Albert Evans of 211 Front Street, died this morning at 5:25 at the hospital of injuries suffered eight days ago when he fell on a sharp twig which pierced his abdomen. ... Finally it was decided to operate again. His condition was very bad, so bad, in fact, that he died a short time after the second operation. Robert was in the fourth grade and was a good student. He had many friends who will miss him. The funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow night at 7 o'clock. Thursday morning the body will be removed to Mitchell for burial. Besides his grief stricken parents he leaves two sister, Pauline and Mary Katherine, an adopted sister, Clara Burgert, and one brother, Paul, twin brother of Pauline.

Attempt to Evade Capture by Suicide

Logansport, Ind., Sept 7. Unable to persuade Mrs. Avanella Ruth Klooz, a 35 year old widow, to marry him, Roy Stanberry killed her shortly before noon today, then attempted suicide. The 42 year old automobile salesman, taken to Cass County hospital whimpering that he did not want to live, underwent an operation late today for removal of a bullet from his chest and surgeons prepared to administer a blood transfusion to bolster his ebbing strength. Officers learned that Stanberry had pursued Mrs. Klooz with petitions of marriage since her husband, a mussel digger, drowned in the St Joseph River July 8. Yesterday they learned the couple quarreled bitterly and Stanberry was ordered not to return to the Klooz home. He made repeated unsuccessful efforts to see the widow and asked a neighbor to interecede for him. Finally, officers were told , he forced his way into the Klooz house with drawn revolver, brushed aside 15 year old Mary Catherine Klooz and fired three bullets at Mrs. Klooz as she crouched on the dining room floor, begging for mercy. One shot hit an artery in her neck. A cartridge snapped at the daughter, misfired, and then Stanberry picked up his victim, carried her to his car, and transported her to the hospital, where she died of internal hemorrhages. He left the hospital when a police squad car drove up and he fled before them at eighty miles an hour down State Road No. 25. The pursuing police saw the car swerve and retard as Stanberry pitched a gun out of the window. They found him with a bullet wound in the chest which had puntured his lung. At Cass County Hospital Stanberry confessed the shooting in the presence of Coroner M.D. Steward and the police. Prosecutor Robert ?vid said he would seek a first degree murder indictment from the Grand Jury.

Slaying Avenged

Kokomo, Ind, April 16 (AP)

Sheriff George Scott prepared today to take Roy Stanberry, 41, Logansport used car salesman, to the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City to begin serving a two to twenty-one year sentence for the slaying of Mrs Ruth "Babe" Klooz, 35, his widowed sweetheart, in her home at Logansport last September. Stansberry was convicted by a jury of six men and six women in the Howard Circuit Court last night.

Obituary. Bedford Times. Sept 9, 1936.

The body of Mrs. Avanella Ruth Klooz, 35 year-old widow, slain Monday at her home in Logansport by Roy Stanberry, 42 year-old automobile salesman, who failed in a subsequent attempt to end his own life, will be brought to Mitchell Thursday afternoon for burial in the Mitchell cemetery, according to announcement received by the Haverly mortuary at Mitchell, which will have charge of the burial. The funeral party will journey to Mitchell by motor route following services arranged for 10am Thursday at Logansport. Both parents, now separated, survive, and her mother, Mrs. Madge Frank, resides in Cincinnati, Ohio. She visited in Mitchell recently. The father's place of residence is not known. He was reported in Logansport following his daughter's death... Officers learned that Stanberry had pursued Mrs. Klooz with petitions of marriage since her husband, a mussel digger, drowned in the St. Joseph River July 8. Sunday, they learned, the couple quarreled bitterly and Stanberry was ordered not to return to the Klooz home... Finally, officers were told, he forced his way into the Klooz house ... fired three bullets at Mrs. Klooz ... picked up his victim, carried her to the hospital, where she died of internal hemorrhages...

Borrowed Car Crashes; Runaway Girl, 18, Killed.

An 18-year-old Indianapolis girl who ran away from home Tuesday in her parents' car with her 16-year-old boyfriend was injured fatally yesterday near Winesburg, Ohio, when the auto grazed a parked car, then rammed a tree along U.S. 62. Sheriff James Taylor of Holmes County, Ohio, said the car was traveling southeast on U.S. 62 when the girl evidently fell asleep at the wheel. Her companion suffered a shoulder injury in the crash. The victim, Miss Anna Joyce Evans, 1930 North Alabama Street, only child of Mr. & Mrs. Jesse M. Evans, and her companion, Ronald L. Spencer, a son of Mrs. Bertha M. Spencer, 191 North Routiers Drive, had been the object of a search since Tuesday when police were told she had taken her parents' car without their knowledge. Mrs. Spencer told Indiana State Police she had been told by friends of the young couple that they were heading for Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Spencer said they were not intending to marry but had just decided to take a trip. They had driven to Niagara Falls and were returning to Indianapolis when the accident occured, Mrs. Spencer said. Mrs. Evans told police her daughter, a 1963 graduate of Shortridge High School, had been active in work at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theater and had met Spencer while working there. Both young Spencer and Miss Evans had appeared in the theater's productions, although she worked primarily in the theater's prop department. Mrs Evans told police that although Miss Evans and young Spencer had known each other for some time, she did not believe they were serious about each other. Her mother said Miss Evans was planning to enter Indiana University classes here this fall. She wanted to become a schoolteacher, Mrs. Evans said. Spencer was taken to Pomerance Hospital at Millersburg, Ohio, where he was reported in satisfactory condition. Funeral services for Miss Evans are pending at Flanner and Buchanan Fall Creek Mortuary. Survivors include the parents and a half-sister, Mrs Donna Parnum, all of Indianapolis.

Reunion main story

By MARY G. JOHNSON

Hamer Family

While the Quinn reunion was under way, the Hamer family was holding a reunion in Spring Mill's Donaldson Shelter House. Priscilla Hamer Knight, 89, one of the oldest ... David Padgett, 51, Carmel, a descendant of Thomas Hamer, said "Everybody goes off in their different direction. You graduate from college. You don't bring it back home. You go off and do what's best for your new family." Padgett comes to be in Spring Mill and to be with his family. "That's the drawing card for me: my heritage with Spring Mill and the family meetings that we have and talk about yesteryear. It's still a thrill to walk through the park and just kind of get a feel, a sense of what it was like to live here 100 years ago."...
