August 16, 1998. Blue Tour highlights northern Lawrence County. Checkpoint 15 is the junction with Ind. 58 in Springville. Turn left and travel four miles to Avoca. Checkpoint 16 is the Avoca Fish Hatchery. The hatchery grounds are open to the public. The old white house on the grounds serves as the property manager's home and is not open to the public. The house was once a stage coach stop and was the home of Joseph Hamer, brother of the men who operated Hamer's Mill at Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell. This Hamer also operated a mill on the hatchery grounds. The mill is no longer standing. (Bedford Times-Mail)

Avoca Landmark (Picture of residence at the Avoca Fish Hatchery by Claude Parsons). History of Avoca Dates Back to 1818; House at State Fish Hatchery Is 133 Years Old, By Claude Parsons. One of the oldest buildings in Lawrence County can be found in the town of Avoca. The building, which is reported to be 133 years old, is now the residence of the superintendent of the Avoca Fish Hatchery. In the early days, the building was an inn and travelers felt right at home there. It was built in 1823 by the Hamer Brothers, of North Carolina, who were the first settlers of the town back in 1818. One north upstairs room of the building was opened up as a grocery store in 1828. Avoca, with a present population of about 300, is located six miles northwest of Bedford in Marshall township. The first mill in the township, as well as being one of the earliest in the county, was build at Avoca about 1819 by a man named Fitzpatrick, and later sold to the Hamer Brothers. It was operated by a turbine waterwheel, and had three sets of buhrs -- one for wheat, one for corn, and one for chop feed. In 1884 the mill was valued at $2500... (Bedford Times-Mail, 1956) (The Hamer Brothers were not from North Carolina. They were from New York. The wives of the younger brothers were from North Carolina.)

Notes from Family Reunions. Avoca Mill Site. The mill at Avoca, which was built in 1819, burned down in the 1860's and was rebuilt. The mill was operated by turbine waterwheels. Water to run the mill came from a large underground spring which surfaces from a cave near the mill site. The mill had three sets of buhrs, one for wheat, one for corn, and one for chop feed. Hugh Hamer, Thomas L. Hamer, and Edward Fitzpatrick, their brother in law, built a house in 1823 for the residences of the mill owner. This building still stands, and is one of the oldest buildings in Lawrence County. The furnishings from the home were brought in by ox cart from Louisville, Kentucky. Although the home was built as a residence, over the years it has served as an inn, a post office, a general store, and a grocery store. It now serves as a residence for the superintendent of the Avoca Fish Hatchery, which bought the property in 1924. Edward Fitzpatrick owned and operated the mill from 1819 until he sold it to Absolam Hart. James Hamer and Joseph Hamer came to Indiana about 1828 or 29. They married sisters Sophia (1-5-1832) and Evaline Wood (7-17-1834), and on July 24, 1834, these brothers bought the mill and 200 acres of land for $800, from Absolam Hart (deed recorded on 6-9-1835). With a bright future and four little children, Joseph decided to buy the entire ownership of the mill and make a home for his family. On December 10, 1838, he bought out James for the sum total of $2,100. (Mortgage recorded on said date and deed recorded on December 11, 1839.) Sadness befell Joseph when his wife died on August 10, 1841, only a year and a half after buying. Because of this unforeseen circumstance, Joseph sold back the mill, house, and land to James Hamer. James acknowledges mortgage and signed it as fully satisfied on February 22, 1842. Joseph remarried on November 21, 1842, to Martha Jane Maddox and left Avoca to move to the Spring Mill area. By 1884 the mill was valued at $2,500. But after many years of disuse, it was bought and moved to Owensburg, Indiana, to be used as a private home. The place where this mill stood at Avoca can still be seen today.

Notes for JAMES ALEXANDER DAVIS:

Obituary from a local newspaper.

Last Thursday afternoon, a number of friends and relatives gathered to pay their last respects to our christian friend, James A. Davis. Brother Davis was born April 16, 1832, near Bedford, Indiana. At the age of 29 he was married to Miss Hannah Hamer, who departed this life Oct. 2, 1872. To this union were born two children, Fannie and B.F. Davis. Fannie passed to an early reward in childhood; B.F. Davis is an honered, respected, christian citizen, who resides near town. The deceased in 1887 united with the United Brethren, a few years later he united with the Odessa Christian Church, and lived a faithful christian life as he saw it. In his last hours he thanked God for his kindness and mercy, and thus revealed his hopes and satisfaction in Christ. This dear old father quietly passed away, after a short illness, at 9 o'clock, Aug. 31, 1915. He was laid to rest in the Greenton Cemetery. Funeral services were conducted by W.J. Gillmore, assisted by Revs. Snyder and Harris and a host of friends. W. J. Gillmore.

He was the only son of James A. and Hannah Hamer Davis. His only sister, Frances, died at the age of 3 years. In early manhood he came, with his father, to Missouri to make his home, his mother having died when he was nine years old. December 30, 1896, he was united in marriage to Mima Jordan of Odessa. To this union were born four children; two daughters, Ruby (Mrs John Ford) and Mildred (Mrs. Cameron Morrison); two sons James Noble and Chester Franklin, all living in or near Odessa. He leaves ten grandchildren, an aged uncle and aunt in Indiana, hosts of cousins and many friends. He spent the last thirty eight years of his life at the home he established near Odessa, being a farmer all his life. He was 78 years, 2 months, and 16 days old at the time of his death. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Christian Church, conducted by Rev. E.V. Galloway of Lamar, assisted by Rev. G.E. Prewitt of Sweet Springs. Burial was in Greenton Cemetery.

Veteran Business Man Long Associated With Wadley Company Here. Rites for Fred J. Tiedman, 85 years old, retired business man, will be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning at the P.J. Ryan & Sons Chapel with requiem high mass at 9:30 o'clock at St. Joseph's church. Mr. Tiedman's death came Tuesday at the residence, 247 Barton avenue, following a lingering illness dating back to 1945, when he relinquished the presidency of the Wadley Company. The youngest of five children, Mr. Tiedman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 20, 1862, one of two sons of Henry and Louise Pearcy Tiedman. In his early boyhood Mr. Tiedman's parents moved to Jersey City, N.J., where he received his common and high school education. When a young man of 20 years old, Mr. Tiedman moved to the Midwest, remaining here since that time. He became interested in the produce business and selected this as his profession. He was regarded as one of the experienced men in this field and was well known to others in the trade, and his advice and judgment were always appreciated. Together with Mr. Wadley, the decedent established the Wadley Company in Terre Haute, which was to become one of the largest of six enterprises in several states where the firm had branch offices. The business was located at First and Poplar streets in 1913, which property was later razed to make way for the modern building. Mr. Tiedman was first vice president until 1934, when he was made president, a position held by him until January, 1945. Ill health required his retirement from active participation in the business. Mr. Tiedman was respected for his integrity, and only his closest associates were aware of his many charities and work in behalf of the underprivileged. Surviving are the widow, Ella May Daniels Tiedman, whom he married on April 27, 1907; two sons and three daughters. He was a member of St. Joseph's church, the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 86, and the Loyal Order of Moose No. 1009. The Elks lodge will conduct memorial services at the Ryan Chapel Thursday evening following the recitation of the rosary at 7:30 o'clock. Burial will be made in Calvary cemetery.

Reunion main story

By MARY G. JOHNSON

Hamer Family

The Rev. Glenn Hamer, 47, Mitchell, said the family descends from four brothers, Hugh and Thomas who ran the mill at Spring Mill and Joseph and James who ran the mill that once stood at Avoca. He is a descendant of Joseph. The family is widely scattered. Reunions began in the 1930s, but were discontinued during World War II. They resumed in the early 1980s and for a while Hamers were traveling great distances to come to the reunions. Not now. Now those who attend are from this area for the most part. There are 139 on the list of relatives, but only about 25 attended the reunion this year. The Hamers have tried to attract more family members to the reunion. "We had them dress in old fashioned clothes," said Glenn. "We had some come and play the older instruments, the dulcimers, bagpipes. We tried to organize games and activities that kids might like, badminton, horseshoes. We've tried everything. "We understand people from great distances can't take their vacation every year to come back for the reunion. Our hope is every other year or every third year. It's the young folks we can't pull in no matter what we plan ... They don't seem as interested in their roots," said Glenn.

Reunion main story

By MARY G. JOHNSON

Hamer Family

But some young people catch fire for family history and heritage early on. Glenn's son, Eric Hamer, 23, Mitchell, who is Corey's father, used to visit the Hamer Cemetery in the park regularly starting when he was 16. It was a place where he could talk out his troubles to the tombstones of his relatives. He kept doing it until he met his wife and got married. "My friends always thought it was odd. I never thought anything of it. Neither did my father. He realized that was the only place I had I felt like we had roots." These ties with the past and present "give me the feeling that our family actually has some history. We aren't just out here alone. We have a history and a past behind us and our relatives have done great things and in the future hopefully will do other things," said Eric. He hopes to be buried in the Hamer Cemetery one day if there are plots available. "Maybe some years down the road some kid will sit at my tombstone," he said.
