Descendants & Sources

Generation No. 1

1. SR. THOMAS3 HAMER (ADAM2, JAMES1) was born December 31, 1730 in England, and died September 1806 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvannia. He married ELENOR LYONS Abt. 1765. She was born May 15, 1750, and died September 17, 1826 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Notes for SR. THOMAS HAMER:

Much of this data has been gathered from the various family traditions of the descendants of Thomas Hamer, especially those of southern Indiana, unwritten and written (e.g., McNeall Synopsis, Joseph Hamer Narrative, Palmer/Hamer Tree). These people have met over the years in reunions held at the Hamer Mill in Spring Mill State Park, near Mitchell, Indiana, where a Hamer Cemetery is also located.

FAMILY BIBLE RECORD

The family of Thomas Hamer Sr with Elenor Lyons and ten children and the family of Thomas Hamer Jr with Hannah McNeal and ten children can be found in the family bible of Thomas Hamer Jr as transcribed by George Washington Hamer and passed down through the Hugh, Thomas L., and Joseph Hamer families of southern Indiana. No entries are made after 1849, or it was transcribed at that time. The dates are often one year off from dates given elsewhere, perhaps due to the "old style" calendar.

Eleanor Cleveland Mccredie, in 1916, gave 1765 as the date for the marriage of Thomas Hamer and Elenor Lyons and she gave the place as England. The children's dates were a little different: Thomas (1766), William (1769), Joseph (1773), Williamanah (1774), Jesse (1779), Mary (1781), Elizabeth (1783), James (1786), Nancy (1789), and John (1792). She gave as sources PA Archives vol 4, p 367 and 681 and vol 5 p533 (Northumberland County Lists of Revolutionary Soldiers), and Family Records.

The History of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania by Herbert Bell (1891) lists Thomas Hammer as a taxable inhabitant in 1783.

History of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania by Herbert C. Bell 1891

CHILLISQUAQUE TOWNSHIP. CHILLISQUAQUE creek drains nearly the whole of that part of Northumberland county situated between Montour ridge and Limestone ridge, with a general southwesterly course from the Montour county line to its junction with the West Branch. This region, one of the most fertile and populous agricultural districts in the county, forms the township of Chillisquaque; it is traversed by the Philadelphia and Erie and Catawissa railroads, and has several villages of importance in addition to its advantages as a farming section. The present area of Chillisquaque township was originally embraced in Turbut, erected, April 9, 1772. At February sessions, 1775, Mahoning was formed from the southern part of Turbut, with Chillisquaque creek as a mutual boundary. Point was erected from Mahoning at February term, 1786, thus leaving to the latter a narrow triangular territory; and at the following May term the township of Chillisquaque was formed from the contiguous portions of Mahoning and Turbut, with the following boundaries. Beginning at the corner of Point township on the top of Montour's hill nearly opposite the nine-mile tree, and to extend from thence to Joseph Wilson's on the north side of Chillisquaque creek, from thence to the top of the Limestone ridge to the house occupied by Neal Davis on Colonel Francis's land, from thence a straight course to the West Branch of Susquehanna. In 1813 this township was attached to Columbia county, of which it formed a part until 1815; it was then reannexed to Northumberland, but in the following year a considerable part of its territory was again attached to Columbia and now forms part of Montour. The following is a list of the taxable inhabitants of Chillisquaque township in 1783, when it included Liberty township, Montour county, in additon to its present area: John Alexander, William Anderson, William Allen, Daniel Bates, John Blair, John Blair, Jr., Samuel Blair, Joseph Biggars, David Carson, Johnston Cheney, Adam Clark, John Clark, James Carscaddon, James Carscaddon, Jr., John Carscaddon, William Carscaddon, Charles Cochran, James Cochran, John Cochran, Widow Campbell, John Curry, John Cheney, James Dunlap, John Donaldson, James Davidson, Thomas Davidson, James Donaldson, Andrew Davis, Benjamin Elliott, John Funston, Jesse Funston, William Fisher, Robert Finney, John Gillespie, Robert Giffin, Widow Gillespie, Paul Geddis, Hugh Gowan, John Galloway, John Gray, John Hunter, William Haslet, Stephen Horn, Adam Hempleman, Thomas Hewitt, Francis Huston, THOMAS HAMMER, John Hannah, Samuel Harper, George Irwin, Samuel Irwin, Leonard Kelley, Neul McMullen, Charles McCoy, William Mulligan, Richard Mayhew, William Murray, Patrick McNinch, John Martin, George Morrison, John McMahan, John Murray, David McCartney, John McMahan, James McMahan, Robert McWilliams, Hugh McBride, Alexander Miller, James Murray, James Neal, Stephen Oliver, Samuel Oaks, Thomas Palmer, Hance Potts, Thomas Rodgers, Martin Reece, James Robinson, William Reed, David Reynolds, James Reynolds. HAMMER THOMAS 2 REG'T (DOBBIN'S), NEW YORK MILITIA. PRIVATE PRIVATE 90 602

There is a warrant #22714 to a Thomas Hamer for services in the War of 1812, a private in Grosvenor Company of the 26th Regiment of Infantry, that grants him bounty land in Arkansas Territory, dated Sept. 8, 1821.

One family source says Thomas Hamer moved to Ohio and, on July 9, 1819, came to Indiana with his son, Joseph, and daughter, Lettie. This source also says that Lettie Hamer married a Mr Bausley and moved to Ottawa, Kansas. Another source says the brothers, James, Joseph, Lettie, and their father, Thomas, came to Indiana in 1828 or 1829 from Ohio, and Lettie married a Mr. Bausley and moved to Ottawa, Kansas. We know that Lettie married John Bosley in New York and moved to Ohio. After John's death she went to Ottawa, Kansas, to join several of her children, Harriet, Thomas Jefferson, and Almira. She returned to Ohio in 1893 and died at the home of her daughter, Laura.

Order Book of the County Commissioners of Lawrence County Indiana.

On August 25, 1826, a notice was served that Thomas Hamer had voted in an election for State Representative in Bono Township, Lawrence County, Indiana. It was further stated that he was not a legal resident of Lawrence County, Indiana. So, the election of Louis Roberts was being challenged by John Brown.

The will of Robert McNeal in 1818 mentions the children of Thomas Hamer & Hannah McNeal:

One source for the Hamer-McNeal family is the so-called McNeall Synopsis, composed about 1934. It consists in an outline of names with some annotation.

Family tradition says that Hannah McNeal Hamer died in Jamestown, New York, in 1811. A history of the village of Jamestown says that no deaths occured from the founding of the village in 1810 until 1815. Perhaps the Hamers were in the countryside around Jamestown.

Notes for WILLIAM HAMER:

Family tradition and the family bible say William Hamer was born 22 Jan 1769 in Pa. Tradition says he began his family while still in Pennsylvannia, and moved the family at least twice. In 1812, he went to the Lake Champlain area in New York state. In 1817, he moved to Ohio. He purchased 50 acres near Oxford, Butler County, Ohio. (The purchase was recorded on 30 Oct., 1829, in the courthouse, in Hamilton, Ohio}. He remained there until he died. His wife's name is not recorded, but at least one child survived.

There is a record of a sale of land by William Hamer in Ontario County, New York, in 1817. This may be our William Hamer. He sold it to Christopher Clark. He may have moved at the time of the sale.

William purchased 50 acres near Oxford, Butler County, Ohio, recorded in Hamilton, Ohio, on Oct 30, 1829. This could have been recorded after the purchase.

The following transfer paper was given by the Presbyterian Church at Chillisquaque, Pennsylvania. "These are to certify, that the bearers hereof, William Hammer & his wife, Ibby, are herefore of good character, have had the privilege of Baptism for a child with us, are free from public scandal or anything exposing to Church injure known to us & may be received into any variety of Christians where God in his Providence may order their lot. Given at Chillisquaque with advise of session the 25th day of October 1801, by John Bryson F. D. M." Rev. John Bryson was pastor from 1790 to 1840. From the Thomas L. Hamer correspondence in the Huntington Library in California.

Tombstone in Old Ebenezer Cemetery, Hanover Township, Butler County, Ohio, read, as recorded in History and Biographical Cyclopedia of Butler County Ohio, published at Cincinnati in 1882: " William Hamer, a native of Pennsylvania, who married Isabel Vanderhook, September 11, 1796, and who died May 4, 1811(?)". Since the church was not begun till 1817 and there are no other burials before the 1830's it can be assumed that the date was incorrectly read. It could be 1831 to 1839, since William was in the 1830 census and not in the 1840 census. The stone was no longer extant when the tombstones were transcribed in 1962, although a few other stones recorded in 1882 were again reported.

On February 24, 1834 the land which William Hamer owned is listed in the "Reily Township List and Valuation of Real Property made in the year 1834", as belonging to the heirs of William Hamer. 30 acres valued at $200. He died before 1834.

There is no mention of William in a letter of cousin Hugh Hamer to Thomas L. Hamer in 1835. He is likely not living. This letter is found in the Thomas L. Hamer Correspondence in the Huntington Library in California.

That amongst others said McKasson retained property in his hands to pay off the Judgment aforesaid. That the said John A. Your orator further states that although nearly six years have elapsed since rendition of said Judgment yet no execution had ever been issued on the same. And the said Silas Misner being called Israel D. Crosby, his solicitor, comes and answers to the said bill for the said Isaac Lindley and for cause of ? shows that the said Isaac Lindley by his said bill has not made such a case as entitles him in a Court of equity to any discovery from this defendent or relief against him, wherefore and for other good causes the said Silas Misner ? to the said bill and prays the judgment of this court whether he shall be compelled to make any other or further answers thereto and that he may be hence dismissed with his costs. This cemetery is also known as the Sibleyville Cemetery, Palmer Cemetery and the McFarlan Cemetery. The tombstones in this cemetery were copied twice before. About 1930 a list of inscriptions was made by Mary C. Douglas with help from Anna B. Yates, both of the Irondequoit Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Another list of inscriptions was made in 1939 by Mary Moulthrop and Myrte Rice Haynes, also of the same D.A.R. Chapter. A combined list was made from these earlier records and a visit to the cemetery was made on September 25, 1992 by Richard T. Halsey and corrections and four additions were made to the master list.
