DELAWARE COUNTY REPUBLICAN
Death Notice. Departed this life, on the morning of the 1st inst., MARY HAMOR, in the sixty ninth year of her age, wife of Abm. Hamor, of Kennett Township, Chester county. The funeral will take place on first day, the 4th inst., to leave the house at eleven o'clock in the forenoon.
The Hinkson family came from the county of Cavan, in the North of Ireland. The oldest members of the family there say that three brothers emigrated in the seventeenth century from Hanover, in the North of Germany, to Ireland... The Hinksons of this country are descended from John Hinkson and Jane, his wife, who, with one son, came to this country from Ireland, and settled in Upper Providence township, Delaware Co. They had eight children, four sons and four daughters, viz.: John (who married Abigail Engle), George (who married Catharine Fairlamb), Thomas (who married Mary Worrilow), James (who married Elizabeth Crossley), Jane (who married Thomas D. Weaver), Mary (who was unmarried), Sarah (who married William Hawkins), and Nancy (who married Joseph Dickerson). The descendants live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Maryland. The parents of Frederick James Hinkson were John Hinkson, Jr., of Lower Providence township, and Abigail, a daughter of Frederick Engle, formerly of the borough of Chester. They were married in 1784. Their children (besides F.J. Hinkson) who reached maturity were: Jane (who married Ambrose Smedley, a farmer of Middletown township; she died in 1873, in her eighty-ninth year), Ann (who married David Baker, of Middletown township,— he was a carpenter and builder), John (whose business was that of a farmer. His first wife was Jemima, a daughter of Joseph Worrall, of Upper Providence; his second, who is now living in Chester, is Orpha, a daughter of Joseph Naide, of Chester township. John held the position of steward of the House of Employment of this county, was sheriff, a member of the State Legislature, and a recorder of deeds and register of wills), Mary (who married Abraham Hamor, formerly of Middletown, and afterwards of Hamorton, in Chester County), Joseph (who was a carpenter and builder. He married Ann, a daughter of Samuel Black, of Marple), Orpha (who married Jacob Evans, of Upper Providence, afterwards of Chester township), and Edward Engle Hinkson (who married Sarah, a daughter of Samuel Slanter, of Chester township. He was a carpenter and builder. He was the first building inspector of the city of Chester; held the office for several years, and until his death). All of the children of John Hinkson, Jr., are deceased. (Ashmead, Henry Graham, History of Delaware County, 1884. pp. 327-424)

Patterson Hamer, merchant, was born and reared in Eastern Pennsylvania, where he taught school, worked on a farm and learned the tailor's trade. His cousin Edward (noticed above) assisted him in his educational carrer, and they subsequently entered the dry goods and grocery business in partnership, excluding the retail of liquors. Although many predicted predicted their defeat, they succeeded, and continued to prosper for 14 years, while many other business firms in their community failed. In 1854 they came to Vermont and purchased the building they now occupy, besides several town lots, and other business property. They are also joint owners of a valuable farm, and have done much toward the material advancement of the village of their choice. Patterson has declined all public office except that of supervisor or other local positions. He has always been opposed to slavery, and in the days of its existence he aided many a fugitive. In the late war he contributed largely to its prosecution, hoping thereby the sooner to end it. History of Fulton County Illinois. Peoria: Chapman, 1879. p.917

Death Record: Edward Hamer. After an illness of but a few days, Mr. Edward Hamer passed quietly into the great beyond, at his home in Vermont [IL], Saturday morning, Feb. 22, 1908, being at the time of his death Vermont's oldest citizen. His has been an active life, and his health was such as to enable him to be upon the streets and to attend to his business to within a few days of his death. He was born in Middleton, Pa., near Philadelphia, being the son of Abram and Mary Hamer. His educational advantages tho few, compared with the present, were above the average at the time. He taught school for two or three years, but in the spring of 1841, he embarked in the mercantile business with his cousin, Patterson Hamer, under the firm name of E. & P. Hamer. In 1854 he came to Vermont, Ill., his partner the following year, and they continued in business until 1882. In all his business dealings he was honorable and upright. He said to friends a few days before his death, " I never knowingly or intentionally misrepresented a piece of goods to a customer in my life". He was an ardent temperance advocate and worker, being himself a teetotler, and his home was thrown open to all visitors to our town who came in the interest of temperance and civic righteousness. One of the regrets of late years being that he could no longer takes active part in the great issues of the day. His life has been such as to add honor to the town from his having lived in it, and his example as a businessman and citizen such as to be worthy of imitation by the oncoming generation. In 1860 he was married to Andrew Anna Morris at Hemerton, Pa. To them were born two daughters, Mrs. Susanna M. Amrine of Vermont, and Mrs. Mary H. Parotte of Omaha, Neb. Hamer, Ann M., March 16, 1828; July 13, 1916
Obituary from Vermont newspaper. Andrew Anna Morris, daughter of John and Susanna W. Morris, was born March 16, 1828, at Hamerton, Chester Co., Pa. For some years, during her young womanhood, she devoted herself in teaching, first in public schools and afterward in a girls boarding school and a Friends private school. The instinct of a teacher was in her throughout her life and in her this instinct was strengthened by an unusual ability. She possessed the best that the simple training of the society of Friends could give and to these faculties nature had added a splendid physical presence, a keen mind and a capacity for temperate and accurate speech. She was married to the late Edward Hamer, August 16, 1860. The couple came soon to Vermont where Mrs. Hamer spent 52 years of her life. Quietly but with great strength she lived herself into the character of the community. She gave herself to many good works and lived always above the commonplace while she never lost sight of the practical. One simple incident will serve to show with what care and dignity she served wherever she felt her service would count for good. It was in the days when the men of this community were mustering for service. Co. B of the 84th infantry, made up of Vermont men, was drawn up on the main street in front of the Stephens and Winans store, the building now occupied by B. E. Carrick, and Mrs. Hamer had been chosen to present the flag to the company. One who saw it said, "and a queenly figure she was." From the time of its organization, Mrs. Hamer was interested in the work of the W.C.T.U. It was to such women as this that the call had gone when Francis Willard began to work out her great vision for the world-wide federation of women. The great leader's plans and purposes were understood by this earnest Quaker woman whose qualities of mind and heart, expressed in quiet service have broken down the last argument of that ignorance which battled long to keep woman from free expression of her will in matters of the government under which she must live and work. For 30 years she was secretary of the Presbyterian Missionary society of Vermont, and leader of the King's Daughters circle for more than 20 years. In the fall of 1912 Mrs. Hamer went to make her home in San Diego, Calif. She was an invalid for three years but they were years of development and she came to riper experiences through her suffering. There was never rebellion in her heart and where she did not understand she knew how to trust, so her life came to its close and those knew her saw her grow in sweetness and power of soul to the very end. She slipped quietly out of this life at 6:15 in the morning of July 13. A strong woman whose strength was gentleness. Mrs. Hamer is survived by her two daughters: Mrs. Susanna M. Amerine and Mrs. Mary F. Parrott; one granddaughter, Mrs. Andrewanna Durell, and a great granddaughter, Mary Louise Durell. The funeral services were held Tuesday noon at the Vermont cemetery, in charge of Rev. W. J. Leach. Interment in the Vermont cemetery.

Dr. Ellis P. Hamer. Dr. E.P. Hamer was Quaker born and reared. He came to Vermont [IL] from Chester County, Pennsylvania, as a young doctor in the late fifties, highly resolved to carve his fortune out of a new and, to him, strange country. He was tall, very slim, and rather delicate in general appearance, the exact opposite, in this respect, of Dr. Nance who was destined to be his most formidable competitor, in a professional way. He too wore a full beard, less the mustache, always neat in raiment and, undoubtedly, the best dressed man in town. I remember particularly his boots, no one wore shoes in those days, small and slender in size and always carefully shined. He was a bachelor and boarded with Benjamin Heflin, then residing in a frame house situated in the northeast corner of the late Edward Hamer's home lot. Just across the street, in a house located on the northwest corner of the Edward Webster home lots, resided Miss Louisa Colliday and her widowed mother. She was one of the reigning belles of the town. The Doctor, probably in going to and from his boarding house, was smitten with the fresh beauty of the young lady, for in due time he married her, acquired and moved to the two-story frame house on the east side of Main street opposite the Nance home. There he resided and maintained his office during the rest of his sojourn in Vermont. He had a large, lucrative and otherwise successful medical practice and opinion was divided as to which was the best doctor, Nance or Hamer, each having a large and loyal clientele. Dr. Nance, owing to his crippled condition, always visited his out of town patients in a buggy. Dr. Hamer his on a pacing horse, equipped with old fashioned saddle bags, wherein he carried medicines and surgical instruments, among them a villainous looking tooth forceps. He, being a relative, was doctor to all our family, except myself during my early adolescence. We fell out, as I concluded, over the deceptive use of those infernal forceps and our estrangement lasted for several years. In the interim, Dr. Nance, on my strenuous insistence, always acted as my personal physician. Dr Hamer also accumulated a fortune at Vermont, and was rated one of the rich men of the town. His health failing, he retired from active practice, moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where through wise investments in city and country real estate, he trebled his already large gains. He had two sons, Thomas and Fred, both born in Nebraska, neither of whom I have ever met but have been told, proudly maintained the family traditions. The doctor died and is buried at Lincoln. "Vermont's Pioneer and Later Doctors", by Thomas Ray Hamer. Centennial Edition of the Vermont Union, Vermont, Illinois. Sept. 5, 1935.
