IGI Record Anson B. JOHNSON Sex: M Event(s): Born: 1 Dec 1820

Daviess Co.', 'Indiana Parents: Father: Elijah JOHNSON Mother: Mildred HORRALL

From the Washington Democrat, October 5, 1912: ³Anson B. Johnson Dies At 92. Anson B. Johnson, the oldest member of one of the first families of southern Indiana and probably the oldest native born citizen of Daviess county, died at 9:30 oıclock Friday night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Richard Summers on south Meridian street with whom he had been making his home for the last ten years. Mr. Johnson was ninety-two years old and was born December 1, 1820, on the farm now owned by John G. Shanks, three and a half miles south of the city. The weight of years began to show on Mr. Johnson almost a year ago and all this summer he complained more or less. He was taken ill last Monday and since then he gradually grew weaker until life was extinct. It was simply a wearing out of his constitution that caused his death. A day or so ago Mr. Johnson told those gathered about his bedside that he could feel himself going, that he was just gradually wearing out. His life had been at low ebb ever since Monday and it was only the remarkable constitution that had enabled him to stand ninety-two years that prolonged his life during the last six days. Anson B. Johnson was the oldest of nine children born to Elijah and Mildred Johnson. He was a descendant of one of the first settlers on Indiana territory. His grandfather on the paternal side, James Johnson, was born in Pennsylvania in 1752 and he with nine other families settled in Vincennes in 1785 when that city was nothing but a French village of a few hundred population. He had served as a colonel in the Revolutionary war and was given a land grant of 400 acres in Illinois. He also served in the militia in the troublesome times of Indianaıs earliest history. John M. Horrall, Mr. Johnsonıs grandfather on his maternal side, was born in South Carolina in 1780 and settled in Daviess county in 1812 on a farm on the Petersburg road south of Washington. Born on what is now the Shanks farm south of Washington in 1820, Mr. Johnson grew to be a man before the vast forests of this country had disappeared. He assisted in clearing the old Johnson farm south of this city. When the forest yet abounded with game, his hunting instincts were strong until age disabled him for the sport. Many an exciting tale had he told of his hunting experiences on Daviess county soil and during his later days he was wont to take down his old fashioned rifle and take a walk through the woods in search of squirrel and he always bemoaned the loss of the deer and wild turkeys which used to be so plentiful. At the age of twenty-two Mr. Johnson married Eliza Hunter, a daughter of Ross Hunter, and early pioneer of this county. Seven children were born to the union, only one of whom is living, she being Mrs. Emily Walker. While living with his first wife his occupation was that of a farmer alternating with that of a mason. His first wife having been dead for some time he married Mary Clark of Lawrence county, Illinois, on March 8, 1859. He then moved to Washington and for nearly a half a century worked as a brick mason. To this last union five children were born, two of whom are living. They are Mrs. Richard Summers and Mrs. Ettie Smith of Illinois. At the age of fifteen years Mr. Johnson associated himself with the Methodist church and lived a devoted working member until a short time before his death when illness incapacitated him. He was the oldest member of the First M. E. church of this city. For over seventy-five years he loved his church and worshipped with his people. Mr. Johnson was a man who abounded in charity. His home was open to the needy; he gave as freely as he received; he never doubted; he was a positive man in his opinions; when he espoused a cause he was immovable until convinced that he was wrong. In politics he first affiliated himself with the Whigs then later with the republicans. He voted at every election from that of William Henry Harrison to William Howard Taft. Mr. Johnson was a cheerful disposition; he bore his part and what came to him without a murmur and he believed that every cloud had its silvery lining. To those who knew him Mr. Johnsonıs death will be a great loss as his religious convictions were so marked and his life so exemplary that a person could not help but be benefited by his acquaintance. Mr. Johnson also leaves two brothers, Alfred E. Johnson of this city, and Lenson Johnson of Los Angeles, Cal., and a sister, Mrs. Mahulda Singleton of Vincennes. The funeral services will be conducted from the Summers home Sunday afternoon at 2 oıclock by Rev. Hayden H. Allen and interment will be made in Oak Grove cemetery.²

A.O.Fulkerson. History of Daviess County Indiana. Bowen. 1915. p374-376.

Alfred E. Johnson was born on a farm four miles south of the city of Washington, in Daviess county, on March 27, 1840, the son of Elijah and Mildred (Horrall) Johnson, the former a native of Indiana, born in Vincennes in 1796, and the latter a native of South Carolina, born in 1808, who were the parents of nine children, namely: Anson B., who died at the age of ninety-two, Hulda, who died in July, 1914, at the age of nearly ninety-two, was the wife of William Singleton; Malina, who died at the age of eighty-six years, was the wife of William R. Thomas; Ezra, who died in 1853, at the age of twenty-four; Matilda, who died at the age of sixty-two, was the wife of J.B. Houts; Nelson, who died at the age of seventy-four; Norvan, who died at the age of seventy-four; Alfred E., the subject of this sketch, and Lenson, who died in California in 1913, at the age of sixty-nine years and six months. Elijah Johnson was a farmer and a great hunter, his prowess as a deerslayer having been widely recognized throughout this section. He came to Daviess county in 1816 and was married in 1820. He died in 1848, being crushed to death by a falling tree. His wife died in 1855. Both were devout Methodists, and all their children were members of the same church. All were old line Whigs and later Republicans, the husbands of the girls being members of the same party. The eldest son, Anson B., who lacked a few days of being ninety-two years old, voted for every Republican President from Harrison to Taft, except that, up to 1860, the presidential candidates were Whigs. Elijah belonged to the old territorial militia. Alfred E. Johnson's paternal grandparents were James and Polly (Lindsey) Johnson, natives of Pennsylvania who came to Indiana in 1785 and settled in the then small village of Vincennes. James Johnson was a lieutenanct-colonel in the Revolutionary army, attached to a Maryland brigade. Both he and his wife were buried at St Francisville, Illinois; he at the age of eighty-three and she at a somewhat younger age. They were the parents of fourteen children: JohnL., William, Friend, Joshua, James, Elijah, Reuben, Abner, George, Rebecca, Maria, Polly, Sally, and one whose name is lost to the present generation. Mr. Johnson's maternal grandparents were John M. and Polly (Horrall) Horrall, first cousins and natives of North Carolina, the former of whom was born in 1780. He and his wife came to Daviess county in 1812, four years before Indiana became a state, and settled on the farm now owned by the Shanks heirs, three miles south of Washington, where he died. His widow went to Illinois with a son-in-law, and died in that state. They were the parents of six children: Jason, Mildred, William, Nancy, Elvira, and one who died in infancy. Alfred E. Johnson was born and reared on his father's farm in Washington township. He attended the old-fashioned subscription school, which had a big writing desk, made from a board, extending entirely across the side of the room. Later he attended the county public schools. At the age of twenty-one Mr. Johnson enlisted as a Union soldier in the Civil War, and served three and on-half years. He enlisted as a member of Company E, Fifty-eighth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and later was attached to Companies D and C, Twenty-fourth Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He participated in many battles, and was wounded slightly at the battle of Champion's Hill, Mississippi. After the war Mr. Johnson farmed until 1897, when he retired and moved to Washington. He bought a nice home at 621 West Main street, where he still resides. On October 13, 1870, Alfred E. Johnson was married to Frances E. Batchelor, daughter of John T. and Indiana (Purcell) Batchelor, both of whom belonged to pioneer families of this county, and to this union were born five children, Hugh Clinton, Lena, Elva Myrtle, Edith Llewellyn, and Grant C. Hugh Clinton carried the mail for eighteen years and is now a piano tuner. He married Maud L. Winterbottom and they have two children. Malcolm and Norma. Lena died at the age of two and on-half years. Elva Myrtle married E.R. Wright, a conductor in the service of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad company, living at East St. Louis, Illinois. Edith L. is bookkeeper for the Vose Piano Company in Chicago, Illinois, and receives a spledid salary. Grant has a fine position witht he Burroughs Adding Machine Company and travels out of Chicago. Mrs. Johnson was born in Daviess County, Indiana, on August 10, 1854. Her father was born in Ohio and her mother in Indiana. They died in Daviess county, he at the age of sixty-nine, and she at the age of seventy-five. They were the parents of eight children, Sarah J., Minerva, Martha, Enoch, John, Mary, Laura, and Frances. Mrs. Johnson's paternal grandparents were William and Catherine (Buher) Batchelor, natives of Ohio, who were among the pioneer settlers of this county. Subsequently they moved to Iowa, where they died. They were the parents of eight children, John, George, Catherine, Rachel, William, Abel, Julia, and Sarah. Mrs Johns's maternal grandfather was Jesse Purcell, a native of North Carolina and a pioneer in Daviess county, who lived to be ninety-two years of age. He and his wife were the parents of eight children, Indiana, Rachel, Benjamin, William, Charlotte, Prudence, James and Hiram. Mrs. and Mrs. Johnson are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and for more than forty consecutive years Mr. Johnson was an officer in the church. He has been a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows for fifty years. He is a Republican, and was a school director for ten consecutive years; also serving one term of three years as a member of the board of education in Washington. He was elected to one term of four years in the city council of Washington. No man in Daviess county is more highly respected or merits more honor that Alfred E. Johnson, a man who has lived a consistent life and who has taken a worthy interest in important public matters.
