Bridget Fitzpatrick McMullen appears to be head of the household in 1840 and 1850 Census. This may mean that Archibald McMullen had died. A. McMullin is listed in Franklin Township on the 1840 atlas, so I suspect he died between 1830 and 1840.

It appears that John McMullen (1824) returned to Ohio without his wife. His mother, Bridget, was sick in the County Infirmary, and his brother, Archibald, was sick, perhaps in Minnesota.
Looking thru my notes I found that Archibald was made guardian of William F. McMullen, son of Mary McMullen deceased, on 16 of June 1884. I saw this on a roll of Martin Co. court records. So she was dead before 1900. I would imagine this was around the time of her death. So she may have been too ill to go to Ohio with John and Charles. I would guess John probably went back because of his mother, Bridget, don't you? JoAnn Rowe. 10/07/01

Archibald was made guardian of William F. McMullen son of Mary McMullen deceased on 16 of June 1884. Martin Co. court records.
Mary McMullen's maiden name is not clear; it could be McCleary according to family tradition, or McGarvey according to the marriage and census notes in Ohio, or McGeary according to the Baptismal Register of St Mary's (Barr Twp), or McGalley according to the cemetery records of St. John's Cemetery, Loogootee, in regard to her daughter, Catherine McMullen Dennigan.
Marriage Notes for JOHN MCMULLEN and MARY MCGEARY:
Marriage recorded between John McMullen and Mary McGarvey in the Family Archive CD. Family history gives her name as Mary McCleary. McGarvey may be correct and family tradition in error.
