THOMAS EDWARD SAUNDERS-Family tradition states that Thomas Edward
Saunders, was left fatherless in early childhood. He was raised by an uncle, Edward N. Robinson. Martha Saunders his sister, married a westerner, Richard Speake, who later persihed in a cattle drive. The other sister, Jane, married Dudley M. Pattie (one of the sons of Marsh M. Pattie).
Thomas Edward Saunders was born October 22, 1822. The 1860 census gives his birthplace as Kentucky, while the 1870 census states he was born in VA. He married Mary Eleanor (Elizabeth ?) Berry who was related to Benjamin Berry, on whose land the town of Berryville in Clarke County was established in 1798. Realtion- ship is certain but this Benjamin is not her father.
The family lived at a time at Belle Grove, a well-known plantation in Fauquier Co., prior to the Civil War. Plantation Bellview now called Bellevue. At least by 1860, the family was established at a home on Waterloo Road about one mile west of the courthouse in Warrenton. This house still stands (1997). The family suffered many privations during the war and Saunders became a boot and shoemaker in the town. The shop on Main Street adjoined a meat market established by William Sheppard, Jr., an Englishman, around 1870. This market was later taken over by his father, William Sheppard, who brought the rest of his family to Warrenton in the 1870's. This building still stands on the south side of Main Street, east of the Courthouse. Nine children were born to the Saunders family, five of whom reached maturity.
In Fauquier Co., Va Deed Book, page 398 a deed is recorded between Sanders and Robinson naming Thomas E. Sanders the son of William Sanders.
His marriage to Mary Eleanor Berry is recorded in Fauquier Co., VA Marriage Book 5, page 298.
Thomas contested the will of James Sanders , Chancery Court Record 1849-014, claiming that James Sanders was not in his right mind when his will was written for him because he left everything to his son Elijah and his wife Judith. Thomas was claiming his portion of his father's estate. As far as the record goes the will was not overturned.

She would catch any little mistake. Always had a pencil stuck in her bun. She was a great story teller and the grandchildren loved to hear here tell stories. There eyes would light up as she told stories. She could stretch a dollar from Virginia to New York and when her husband wanted to go into business she had saved the money. She and Hubert built two homes. The home they build on Forrest Avenue in Richmond was beautiful.

As a young man he taught school in the mountains of Virginia and knew some Civil War Veterans.
When he first came to Washington he worked in a Coke Cola Plant and hired his father to work there also. Sadly, he later had to fire him because the power of his position made him have a "swell head".
He loved baseball and coached a Church League team that won championships. He was admired by the young men he coached at Cherrydale
He loved God, his family and others in that order. He was truthful and a true Virginia Gentleman.
