Descendants & Sources

Generation No. 1

1. ELIJAH NASH5 ROBINSON (BENJAMIN4, HENRY3, STEPHEN2, STEPHEN1) was born March 13, 1779 in Fauquier County, Virginia, and died October 13, 1845 in Daviess County, Indiana. He married SARAH ANN GRIFFITH April 05, 1802 in Fauquier County, Virginia, daughter of EVAN GRIFFITH and SARAH WILLOUGHBY. She was born February 13, 1782 in Fauquier County, Virginia, and died February 13, 1849 in Daviess County, Indiana.

Notes for ELIJAH NASH ROBINSON:

History of Knox and Daviess County Indiana. (Chicago: Goodspeed, 1886.)

Reuben Robinson b. 1844 is the son of Elijah G. and Lucretia Sanford Robinson. His father was b. in KY and grandfather was Elijah Robinson, a native of Virginia who immigrated to KY in early life, and from there came to Indiana and located in Daviess Co.

- Excerpts from a Centenniel History of the Arthur Family, by Elijah A. Arthur. Crawfordsville, Indiana, 1937. Daviess County Historical Museum.

They were in Virginia for a time, then joined the stream of Western Emmigration that brought them to Kentucky, it is thought in Mason County near Mayslick. About the turn of the century, they joined a caravan consisting of several families who were bound for Old Post Vincennes, Indiana. Six of these families were: Arthur, Donaldson, Eskridge, McClellan, Robinson, and Wise. Most of these ultimately settled in southern Daviess County, Indiana. John C. Arthur the third son of James Arthur was born Jan. 26, 1801, and died July 5, 1842, and on Jan. 10, 1826 married Nancy Robinson.

EARLY FAUQUIER COUNTY MARRIAGE BONDS

An old English custom carried over to early Fauquier required that someone, usually the fathers post bond before a couple could marry. The amounts posted ran to $150 or $200. These earliest Fauquier marriage bonds, gleaned from County records, were published originally in various issues of the old Bulletin of the Fauquier Historical Society.

Notes for JOHN CAMPBELL ARTHUR:

Tombstone in Veale Creek Cemetery reads:

"John Arthur D. 5 Jul 1842, Age 40y, 7m, 9d"

This gives a birthdate of June 26, 1801.

- Excerpts from a Centennial History of the Arthur Family, by Elijah A. Arthur. Crawfordsville, Indiana. Washington, Indiana: Daviess County Historical Museum, 1937.. James Arthur was born in Ireland about 1776, and came to America the latter part of the 18th century. He married a woman born in Wales. Most of these ultimately settled in southern Daviess County, Indiana... James Arthur and his wife, however, lived at Chelsea, about four miles east of Washington, Ind. There they reared their family of six children, three boys, and three girls. The eldest son James, is thought to have been born about 1798; Matthew, the second son was born March 22, 1800; John C., the third, was born Jan 26, 1801; Margaret, Mary, and Melvina followed in order, but no dates are known... The six children born to James Arthur and wife grew to maturity, married, and established homes. All continued to live in Indiana, except James who returned to Kentucky, and reared a large family there. John C. Arthur the third son of James Arthur was born Jan. 26, 1801, and died July 5, 1842, and on Jan. 10, 1826 married Nancy Robinson. Their history will follow in a subsequent chapter.

John C. Arthur was the third son of James Arthur and his Welsh wife. At the age of twenty-five he was married to Nancy Robinson, a product of the Kentucky caravan aforementioned. They settled on a farm four miles southeast of Washington, and a mile south of the Vealescreek church.

John C. Arthur was, like his father James, not destined to long life, for he died at the early age of forty-one years. Nancy Robinson Arthur survived him fifty-one years, dying in the old family home July 23, 1893, at the age of 86 years. The names of their children were: Elizabeth, Elijah, Sarah, Lydia, James Robinson, William, John, and Mary, all of whom spent their entire lives in Indiana, and mostly in Daviess Co.

Notes for ELIAS ROBINSON:

Tombstone in Veale Creek Cemetery reads: Elias Robinson, died January 28, 1863, Aged 51 years, 4 months, 20 days. This gives a birthdate of September 8, 1811. This presents a problem since he is present in the 1810 census. There is either a mistake in the stone, which is very clear, or the census date for 1810 Mason County, Kentucky. The census date should be Aug 6, 1810. There was a period of 10 months given to finish the census.

Notes for ELINOR JOHNSON:

Washington Democrat. Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. April 8, 1914

Eleanor Adams. Mrs. Eleanor Adams, eighty-four years old, died about 11:30 o'clock, Tuesday night (April 7, 1914) at her home at 908 Robinson Street. Organic heart disease was the cause of her death. For fifty-four years she had lived in the house at 908 Robinson Street where she died. She was born in this county, March 17, 1830, and was a daughter of John and Polly (Anderson) Johnson. She was married four times, her last husband having been John W. Adams. She is survived by three children: Mrs. Sam Smith, city; Mrs. James Creamer, Mitchell; and Mrs. George Brown, city. Three children are deceased.

Contributor's note: Her husbands were: William Pulliam, Elias Robinson, Gordon Doherty, and John Adams. Her deceased children were: Robert Pulliam; Dixon Robinson, and Dora Robinson Peterson. Eleanor's home sat toward the center of the block now bounded by Front Street, Maxwell Avenue, Robinson Street, and 9th Street, as described by Ethel Robinson Evans, her grand daughter. It seems that lots for Dixon, Dora, Bertha, and other children were taken from the original land.

Records of Oak Grove Cemetery, Washington, Daviess County, Indiana, show:

Eleanor Adams buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Washington, Indiana, born 17 Mar 1830, died 7 April 1914. She is buried in an unmarked grave as are Robert Pulliam, Rosa, and two girls; near the marked grave of Dixon Robinson in Section S. The grave lot is owned by Ellener Adams and Friend Johnson.
