Tombstone in Veale Creek Cemetery reads: Elias Robinson, died January 28, 1863, Aged 51 years, 4 months, 20 days. This gives a birthdate of September 8, 1811. This presents a problem since he is present in the 1810 census. There is either a mistake in the stone, which is very clear, or the census date for 1810 Mason County, Kentucky. The census date should be Aug 6, 1810. There was a period of 10 months given to finish the census.

Eleanor Adams. Mrs. Eleanor Adams, eighty-four years old, died about 11:30 o'clock, Tuesday night (April 7, 1914) at her home at 908 Robinson Street. Organic heart disease was the cause of her death. For fifty-four years she had lived in the house at 908 Robinson Street where she died. She was born in this county, March 17, 1830, and was a daughter of John and Polly (Anderson) Johnson. She was married four times, her last husband having been John W. Adams. She is survived by three children: Mrs. Sam Smith, city; Mrs. James Creamer, Mitchell; and Mrs. George Brown, city. Three children are deceased.

Contributor's note: Her husbands were: William Pulliam, Elias Robinson, Gordon Doherty, and John Adams. Her deceased children were: Robert Pulliam; Dixon Robinson, and Dora Robinson Peterson. Eleanor's home sat toward the center of the block now bounded by Front Street, Maxwell Avenue, Robinson Street, and 9th Street, as described by Ethel Robinson Evans, her grand daughter. It seems that lots for Dixon, Dora, Bertha, and other children were taken from the original land.

Washington Democrat, Mon., Apr 24, 1911, p1, col 7. Mary A. Wykoff, wife of James W. Wykoff, a farmer living a short distance west of the city, died Sunday after a three weeks' illness. She was badly burned on the arms some time ago and the injury, along with affection of the brain, is said to have caused her death. Mrs. Wykoff was born on a farm a short distance north of Washington on March 10, 1840, and was seventy one years old. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Elias Robinson. Fifty one years ago last Christmas she was married to James W. Wykoff, and six children were born. Only one child still lives. That is a son, Elijah Wykoff, of Jefferson, Oklahoma. Besides her husband she leaves one brother, William Robinson of Garden City, Kansas, one half-brother, Richard Robinson, and two half-sisters, Mrs. George Brown and Mrs. Samuel Smith. The funeral will be held at the residence Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and burial will be made at Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Hayden H. Allen will officiate at the funeral. Mrs. Wykoff was a member of the Cumberland church.

Washington Herald, Mon., Apr 24, 1911, p1, col 4. Mrs. Mary A. Wykoff, seventy one years old, and the wife of James W. Wykoff, an influential and prominent farmer of Washington township, died at her home northwest of Washington at 11 o'clock Sunday night. The health of Mrs. Wykoff has been failing for sometime, but about three weeks ago she was severely burned about the arms in an accident and these injuries hastened her death. The maiden name of Mrs. Wykoff was Robinson. She was born in Daviess county and had lived in the county all her life. Six children were born to the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Wykoff, which took place December 25, 1858. One of these, Elijah Wykoff of Oklahoma, is living. Mrs. Wykoff was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church. The funeral services will be held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. H.H. Allen, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery.

James W. Wykoff, a gallant soldier of the civil war and a retired farmer, who was widely known among the residents of Washington and Daviess county, died at 2:15 o'clock this morning at the home of Mrs. Samuel J. Smith, his sister-in-law, 507 Front street. The funeral services will be held at the Smith home at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Wykoff was born in Washington but moved to a farm north of the city on the Vincennes road after his return from the civil war, continuing to live there until thirteen years ago when Mrs. Wykoff died after which he began making his home with Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Wykoff was Miss Mary Ann Robinson before her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Wykoff were the parents of five children, only one of whom, a son, Elijah, of Pond Creek, Oklahoma, is living. Mr. Wykoff was a member of U.S. Grant Post, G.A.R. which will be in charge of the funeral.

Washington Democrat, Washington, Daviess County, Indiana, May 8, 1924, Thursday. James W. Wykoff, 89 years old last November, died at 2:15 this morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel J. Smith, 507 Front street. He had been critically ill for three weeks. He was a pioneer resident of this county. When a young man he was married to Miss Mary A. Robinson and to this union six children were born, only one of whom is living, Elijah R. Wykoff, of Pond Creek, Oklahoma. Mr. Wykoff was a member of the G.A.R., having served with the Sixty-fifth Indiana infantry during the Civil War. His wife died thirteen years ago, since which time he made his home with Samuel Smith and wife. The ladies of the G.A.R. will hold flag services at the Smith home at 2 o'clock Saturday. Burial will take place in Oak Grove cemetery.

Mrs. W.G. Smoot Dies After Long Illness. Lydia E. Smoot, wife of Warner G. Smoot, who lives on the Portersville Road, a short distance from the city limits, died Friday afternoon. She had been ill for the last five or six years, and her condition had been serious for some time. During her illness she suffered three strokes of paralysis, and this with minor causes is said to have been the cause of her death. About ten days ago she had a relapse and it was realized then that she would probably never recover. She was born in this city sixty-six years ago on December 2, 1844, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Robinson, who were among the pioneer settlers of Daviess county. While a young girl she joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church and lived strong in the faith of this denomination until her death. She was married in her early years to Warner G. Smoot and five children, all of whom are living, were born. The children are: Mrs. Emma J. Craig, Otwell; Walter G. Smoot, city; R.B. Smoot, Madisonville, Kentucky; Edwin R. Smoot, Greenwood, Kansas; Mrs. Della Donaldson, city. William Robinson of Garden City, Kansas, and Mary Wykoff of Washington is a brother and sister of Mrs. Smoot. A half brother, Richard Robinson, city, and two half sisters, Mrs. Sam Smith and Mrs. Richard Brown, also survive her. Mr. & Mrs. Smoot lived in Washington for several years, occupying a house on Harned avenue, but about ten years ago they moved to the place on the Portersville road. Previous to moving to Washington they lived on a farm near Glendale and it was here that most of Mrs. Smoot's married life was spent. The funeral services; will be held at the Veale's Creek church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, and will be in charge of the Rev. J.L. Hudgins of Nashville, Tennessee, editor of the Cumberland Presbyterian, a religious paper. He will be assisted by the Rev. U.M. McGuire of this city, and the Rev. Mr. Weeks of the Veale's creek church. The body will be laid to rest in a large stone mausoleum in the Veale's creek cemetery.

Two Prominent Women Called. Mrs. Lydia E. Smoot, sixty-six years old, and a prominent and highly regarded woman, died at her home on the Portersville road Friday evening at 6 o'clock. All of her children were present at the bedside. Mrs. Smoot had been an invalid for five or six years during which time she suffered several strokes of paralysis. She also fell about two years ago, fracturing a hip, and this accident greatly weakened her strength. About ten days ago a relapse occured and her vitality gradually sapped away. The end came peacefully and without pain. Mrs. Smoot was the wife of Warner G. Smoot, a retired farmer. She was known and loved by hundreds of people, and was a woman of noble christian character and rare charm of manner. She was devoted to her family and found her greatest joy in ministering to the comforts of her husband and children. Five children survive her. They are Mrs. R.M. Craig, Otwell; Walter G. Smoot, who lives at the family home; Dr. R.B. Smoot, Madisonville, Kentucky, Mrs. A.I. Donaldson, city, and Edwin R. Smoot of Greenwood, Mississippi, an evangelistic singer of nation wide reputation. Besides her children and husband she leaves one brother, William Robinson of Garden City, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. James Wykoff of Washington township; two half sisters, Mrs. Richard Brown and Mrs. Samuel Smith of Washington, and one half brother, Richard Robinson of Washington. Mrs. Smoot was born in Washington December 2, 1844, and was a daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Elias Robinson. She was married to Mr. Smoot January 24, 1864, by the Rev. Francis Slater. Mrs. Smoot was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church from childhood, and she was a faithful and consistent believer in that faith. The funeral services will be held from the Veale Creek church at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. J.L. Hudgins of Nashville, Tennessee, editor of the Cumerland Presbyterian, and a former local C.P. pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. G. G. Weeks and the Rev. U.M. McGuire. The body will be laid to rest in a mausoleum that has been erected at Veale Creek cemetery, and the burial will probably be the first in a mausoleum in Daviess County.

WARNER G. SMOOT, farmer, is a native of Daviess County, born August 28, 1833, son of William P. and Elizabeth (Jett) Smoot, and grandson of Clayborn Smoot, who was a Virginian, and immigrated to Kentucky in the pioneer days of that State. The family came to Indiana about 1820. The father of our subject came to Daviess County in 1826, and located in Washington Township. His death took place July 22, 1872. Subject grew to manhood on a farm, and received a common school education, and in addition attended the Indiana State University and Franklin College in Johnson County, Ind. In April, 1861, he enlisted in Company C, Sixth Indiana Volunteer Infantry for three months, and re-enlisted the same year in Company A, Fifty-second Indiana Infantry, and served until after the battle of Fort Pillow. He then returned home and assisted in organizing and recruiting a battery. This done he was transferred to the Eightieth Indiana Battery, and served until 1865,when be was honorably discharged. He was at Perryville, Knoxville, with Sherman at Atlanta, and participated in many minor engagements. He was commissioned first lieutenant in July, 1864, and was a true and brave soldier during the war. Returning from the field and scenes of war he began teaching school, continuing this until 1872, when he engaged in farming. He owns 131 acres of fine land. January 24, 1864, he married Lydia E. Robinson, born December 2, 1844. They have these five children: Emma J., Walter G., Richard B., Miry D., and Edwin R. In politics Mr. Smoot is an uncompromising Republican, and is a leader of that party in his township. He has been trustee of Harrison Township, and is a representative man of the county. Warner Green Smoot, son of William Payne and Elizabeth (Jett) Smoot, was born August 28, 1833, in Daviess County, Indiana. At the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted first in Co. C of the 6th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Later he was commissioned a First Lieutenant and served in Co. D of the 80th Regiment of Indiana Infantry. Upon his return from service, he married on July 24, 1864, Lydia E. Robinson, born December 2, 1844. She died on December 9, 1910; he died November 16, 1918.

Richard Robinson is Dead. Richard Robinson died at 7:15 o'clock Friday night at his home at 808 West Jefferson Street. He had complained of having stomach troubles for the last three years and for the last three months his condition had been much worse. Mr. Robinson was fifty seven years old. He was born in this city October 13, 1855, and was a son of Elias Robinson. He married Mary Jane Cochran when a young man and eight children were born, all of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Frank Meade of Bicknell; Mrs. Matt Sullivan, Mrs. Ethel Bergert, William, Edna, and Walter of this city; and Mrs. Mary [Mayme] Waggoner of Terre Haute. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Ellen Adams, two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Smith and Mrs. Richard Brown, city, and one brother, William Robinson of Garden City, Kansas. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Baptist Church and also belonged to the Loyal Americans. The funeral services will be held Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the home on Jefferson Street and will be in charge of Rev. S.A. Hayworth, Baptist minister. Interment will be made in Oak Grove Cemetery. [son Hiram has been omitted; also sister Margaret B. Creamer].

Dixon Robinson is found in the 1860 Census for Daviess County, Washington Township. His name appeared to be Simon Robinson to the compiler of the WFT Index to the 1860 selected Census Index, but it is Dixon. He had three older brothers and three older sisters by the name of Robinson, and one older brother and one older sister by the name of Pulliam. He had two younger sisters by the name of Robinson; Elias had been married to Jane Bassett and Ellen had been married to Robert Pulliam. His name in the Probate appears to be Richard, or Dixon.

On the 20th day of July, 1862, I baptized Mary Jane, born in Daviess County, June 25th of the same year, daughter of William Cochran and of Catherine Burns, his wife. Sponsors were: John Coffey & Mrs Ann Kings. J.B. Chasse. Signatures of parents and John Coffey are in the register.

The Washington Indiana City Directory for 1917 lists Mary Robinson (widow of Dixon) living at 808 Jefferson Street with Hiram and Walter Robinson. She was listed with Dixon in the 1912 City Directory.

The 1900 Census gives her birthdate as June 1863, contrary to the year engraved on her tombstone, 1864. The baptismal register gives 1862, which is probably correct. The age given in her obiturary corresponds to 1862. Tombstone in St. John's Cemetery, Daviess County, Indiana, reads: Mary Jane Robinson, 1864-1924.

Deaths. Mary Jane Robinson. Washington lost one of its best esteemed women at 5:15 o'clock Thursday afternoon at which time Mrs. Mary Jane Robinson, aged sixty two years, died at her home, 808 Jefferson Street. She was the widow of Dixon Robinson, who died eleven years ago. Pneumonia caused Mrs. Robinson's death. She had been confined to her bed for the last ten days. Four weeks ago today, her son, William, was buried. Daughter of William Cochran, Mrs. Robinson was born in Veale township. She is survived by seven children: Mrs. Frank Meade, Indianapolis; Mrs. Harry Yeager, Indianapolis; Mrs. James Smith, Terre Haute; Mrs. Albert Evans, Mrs. Matt Sullivan, and Hiram Robinson, all of this city, and Walter of Terre Haute. The following brothers and sisters also survive her: Mrs. Allen Colvin, John, Thomas, and Joseph Cochran, Mrs. John Duffy and Mrs. Edward Clements, all of this city; William Cochran and Mrs. Katherine Lawrence both of Indianapolis. Mrs. Robinson was a member of St. Simon's Catholic church where funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial will be in St. John's cemetery.

Washington lost one of her most faithful and kind-hearted women at 11:30 am, June 14, when Mrs. Emma Brown, wife of George C. Brown, passed away at the family home 621 West Van Trees street. Mrs Brown was born in Washington sixty four years ago last Christmas, and her entire life was spent in this city. Surviving, she leaves her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Charles Honey, and one son, Joseph Brown, both of Washington; and one sister, Mrs. Sam Smith of Front Street. Mrs. Brown had been ill for a week, her death being caused by a complication of diseases. She was a life-long member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, her membership at the time of death being with the First Church.

Mrs. Dora Peterson Dead After Long Illness. Mrs. Dora Peterson, widow of Frank Peterson, who was killed at the B.& O. Southwestern railway shops some fifteen years ago by a car running over him, died this morning at her home in the west end of the city. She was fifty years old, and had for a long time been a sufferer from consumption. She leaves five children to mourn her death. They are Amy, Louis, John, Thomas, and Hugh Peterson, all unmarried. Mrs. Peterson was a member of the ladies circle of the Woodsmen of the World, and carried in that order an insurance policy for $500. The arrangements for the funeral have not been completed, but it will likely take place Sunday.

Mrs. Peterson was fifty years old and a daughter of the late Elias Robinson. She lived with her children at 905 Robinson street.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha B. Smith, 77, wife of Samuel J. Smith, were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Gill funeral chapel with the Rev. R.M. Sims in charge and burial in Oak Grove cemetery. Mrs. Smith died at 8 o'clock Saturday night at her home, 507 Front street, following a two weeks' serious illness from complicatins of a heart ailment. She had been in failing health for eight years. A life long resident of Daviess county, Mrs. Smith was born in Washington June 15, 1862, the daughter of Elias and Eleanor (Johnson) Robinson. She was educated in the schools in this county and was married to Mr. Smith, December 12, 1880. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Old Cumberland Presbyterian church. Living children are Roy R. Smith and Helen W. Smith, both of Washington. She leaves three grandchildren, Guy D., Virgean and Beverly Smith. Three children are dead. Pallbearers at the funeral were Joe Brown, William Sullivan, Richard Sullivan, Rolla Wade, Charles Honey, and Hiram Robinson.

Edwin Robinson Smoot, son of Warner and Lydia (Robinson) Smoot, was born in Washington, Indiana. On September 3, 1907, at Greenwood, Mississippi, he married Lura, daughter of John Archelaus and Anna Ardelia (Aven) Wall.

Edwin Robinson Smoot was graduated from the Mulliken University at Lincoln, Illinois, after which he devoted himself to evangelistic work of the church. For thirty years or more he has been a force in the Methodist Episcopal Church South, with charges at Corinth, Greenville, and other places in Mississippi. He is also prominent in the Masonic orders, being a Knight Templar, Scottish Rite Mason, Shriner, and at one time Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of the Grand Jurisdiction of Mississippi. Alfred Davis Meade was the son of William and Delilah (Hayes) Meade, both of whom were natives of Maryland and early settlers in Washington township, Daviess county, Indiana.... By his first marriage six children were born to Alfred Davis Meade: James B., who was born on July 10, 1866, is a farmer in Harrison township; Minnie, who was born on December 26, 1867, was burned to death at the age of twenty-eight; Giles W., who was born June 19, 1871, died young, as did also Charles E., who was born April 19, 1873; Edward, who was born on January 9, 1875, is a farmer in Reeve township; Frank S., who was born on July 15, 1878, lives at Bicknell, Indiana. By his second marriage four children were born: Sarah F., was born on July 27, 1880, and died in infancy; Annie r. was born on January 24, 1882, married Edward Johnson, and they live at Portland, Oregon and have two children, Marie and Alfred; William A., was born on May 7, 1885, and lives on the farm with Mrs. Meade; Martin L., was born on March 18, 1888, he married Grace Cummings and they live in Martin county and have two children, Milton, born on March 4, 1911, and Lucile born on January 11, 1913.

Shot Through Lung Six Days Ago; Still Living.

With a bullet hole through his left lung, very near the heart, inflicted in an attempt to end his life, Frank Meade, 46 years old, ex chief of police of Bicknell, Ind., has lived since Wednesday, although his condition was considered hopeless at the time of his admission to City Hospital. "I am just despondent and down and out," Meade told his daughter, Mrs Emma Moore, Bicknell, and his wife, when found more than an hour after he had fired the bullet from a revolver belonging to his son, F.C. Meade. Meade was chief of police at Bicknell during the term of Mayor Winter and his term of service expired Dec. 31, 1921.

Indianapolis, June 26. Frank Meade, 46, former chief of police of Bicknell, in in the city hospital here in a critical condition today as the result of a self-inflicted wound. He was found yesterday afternoon in a garage in the rear of his home by his wife and daughter, Mrs. Emma Moore, of Bicknell. He had shot himself through the left lung. Police who investigated attributed his act to despondency. "I am just despondent and down and out", Meade told police after he had been found by his wife and daughter. He was said to have been out of a job. He had gone to Hartford City Tuesday, driving a car borrowed from one of the boarders in his home. He returned Wednesday forenoon, but the family did not know of his return until he was found in the garage Wednesday afternoon. His wife said he had been worrying over his financial situation. His attempt at self destruction had been made with a .38 calibre automatic belonging to his son, F.C. Meade. The bullet was aimed at the heart, but barely missed the heart and passe on through the body. The shot would have been instantly fatal had the course of the bullet varied but slightly. The shot was not heard by members of the family. Note: Frank Meade was chief of police in Bicknell during the administration of Mayor Winter, his term expiring December 31, 1921. Later: - Meade's condition was said to be slightly improved at the hospital this afternoon.

Hiram Robinson dies following 3 week's illness. Funeral of B.& O. Employee to be Held Monday Afternoon. Hiram Robinson, 56, 615 S.W. First street died at the Daviess County Hospital at 5 o'clock Friday afternoon (March 1). He had been seriously ill for the last three weeks and submitted to an operation to relieve his condition. Mr. Robinson was an employee of the Baltimore and Ohio railway, where he was a crew foreman. He was a member of the Church of God, and the B. of R. T. (Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen). A Daviess county native, Mr. Robinson, was born Aug. 21, 1883. His parents were Richard and Mary Jane (Corchran) Robinson. He is survived by his wife Myrtle, whom he married June 26, 1920, and one son, Floyd J. Robinson, at home. He leaves a brother, Walter Robinson, of this city, and the following sisters: Mrs. Harry Yeager and Mrs. Frank Meade, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Mayme Smith of Terre Haute; Mrs. Albert Evans, and Mrs. J.J. Sullivan, of Washington. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Church of God, with the Rev. Thomas Hillenberg officiating. The body will be taken from the Gill funeral chapel to the residence this afternoon.

Mrs. Bertha Sullivan, 89, 808 Jefferson Street, died at 1:05 am today at the Daviess County Hospital. She had been ill since 1968, and seriously ill since November 20 of this year. Mrs. Sullivan was a lifetime resident of this community, and was educated in the Daviess County schools. Born July 4, 1885, to Dixon and Mary Jane (Cochran) Robinson, she married Matthew J. Sullivan, March 11, 1903, and he died December 12, 1940. Mrs. Sullivan was a member of St Simon's church. Surviving are one son, William C. Sullivan, city, one daughter, Mrs. O.D. (Helen) Fisher, North Vernon, three grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. Three brothers and four sisters are deceased. Mrs. Sullivan was the last of her immediate family. The funeral will be held at 10 am Monday in St Simon's church with interment in St John's cemetery. Members of St Simon's parish, and friends, will pray a rosary at 8 pm Sunday at the Ed L. Lee mortuary. Friends may call after 7 pm today, at the Lee mortuary.

Marion S. Burgett, aged thirty-three, son of S.H. Burgett, a well known citizen, was run over and instantly killed Thursday afternoon by a B.& O. Southwestern passenger train No. 2 as it pulled into the uptown depot at 1:30 o'clock. It appeared as though death was instantaneous, for immediately after the train had passed over his body, several ran to him, but he was already dead. Both feet of the unfortunate man were crushed and the bones which were exposed were clinging to his legs only by threads of flesh. His shoes were off and his clothing torn to pieces. A large dent in his hat which was found about fifty feet west of the body, showed where he had received an awful blow to the head. The marks in the center of the track showed that his body had been dragged over the ground for about fifty feet. No one, except possibly a travelling salesman who boarded train no. 2, the train that killed Burgett, saw the accident. The drummer was standing on the depot platform watching the approach of the train when he suddenly cried out: "There goes a man underneath the train!" Immediately a large crowd ran to the scene only to find Burgett's horribly crushed and mangled body. It was hard to identify the man at first, as he was lying on his face and his form and clothes were too badly disfigured for identification. Finally, Deputy Marshall Theodore Wallace expressed the opinion that the dead man was Marion Burgett, but the identification was not complete until his hat, which contained the initials, "M.S.B." was found. Raymond Burgett, a brother of the dead man, was standing on the depot platform when the accident occurred. He followed the crowd to the scene. "Who is it?", he asked. Just then some one was heard to say: "Yes, it is Marion Burgett, for here are the initials in his hat". "My God", cried young Burgett, "Is it Marion?", as he reeled backwards. The poor fellow turned ghostly pale and became so nervous that he could scarcely stand up. His grief was pitiful to see and a kind hearted old woman approached him saying, "Poor boy, it was God's will, and could not be helped," hoping to relieve his agony. It is the opinion of those who saw anything at all of the accident that Burgett threw himself under the train. Raymond Burgett, although he refused to say much about a talk he had with his brother about twenty minutes before the accident, finally said that Marion was out of work and had been for some time and that he did not know what he would do if he didn't find a job soon. Raymond says he told him to go home to his wife and not to worry so much about it, and it would make it easier for him. Another statement of the unfortunate man which was made while in conversation with Patrolman Edward Royse, just before he left the depot platform to his walk to death, and which will strengthen the views of those who think he committed suicide, was that he was out of a job and was thinking about going out of town to get one. In both instances he was talking about being out of employment and seemed to be greatly discouraged because of it. Michael Toohey, engineer on a yard engine, which was standing on the side track near the place where Burgett was killed says that he saw Burgett going down the track and that his head was hanging down on his breast like one in a deep study. Neither the engineer, nor the fireman, on train no. 2 saw the train hit the man. They blew the whistle for the station as usual. Burgett, after he had left the depot, went down the track to a point near west Second street and it was here that the train hit him. Here his hat was found, but his mangled body was dragged as far east as west First street. His shoes were found about twenty five feet west of his body. The entire train passed over his body, but it is thought only his feet were touched by the wheels, as they were mashed to a pulp, while other parts of his body were in a much better condition. A severe blow on the head, it is thought, killed him instantly. The hat, when found, had a large dent and hole on the left side, a little to the front and there was a great gash on the side of the head. It is believed that the force of the blow killed him before he was dragged beneath the train. A complete investigation of Burgett's injuries was made at the Gill undertaking establishment and revealed that the left arm was broken in two or three places, both feet were crushed, several ribs on the right side were crushed, his left jaw was broken, the scalp torn in different places and numerous minor bruises. Burgett, two years ago, married Ethel Robinson, and is survived by the wife and one daughter. He lived on Meridian street, and until several weeks ago was a bartender about the city. He was always a well dressed man and was well known. The funeral arrangements have not been made.

The funeral services for the late Marion Bergert were held Saturday morning at the residence of his father, S.H. Bergert, on north Fifth street. The Rev. J.M. Douglass, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, had charge and preached the funeral sermon. Burial was made in Oak Grove cemetery. The services were attended by many friends of the unfortunate young man, whose tragic end served to make the shock of his death all the harder. The inquest was conducted Friday before Squire Kelams and the testimony was all in after supper. The examination of witnesses was started in the afternoon but it was impossible to reach several of them until night. The verdict of the acting coroner will be that Bergert came to his death by being run over by B.&O. Southwestern train #2 and that it was probably an accident. Although many believe Bergert's death was suicide there was an absence of testimony at the inquest to support this theory. Bergert was a bright young man and studied law for a while in the offices of Ogdon & Inman. He was an apt pupil and had made much progress when he abandoned his determination to become a lawyer. He was a man of fine appearance and had acquired a good education. Beyond doubt there was a brilliant future before him had he continued the study of law.

Marion Bergert, one of the best known men about town, was killed by the east bound passenger train No. 2 on the B.& O. Southwestern railway west of the depot Thursday afternoon. Twenty minutes before the accident, or suicide, Marion Bergert talked with his brother, Raymond, near Main and east Third streets. During the conversation Marion complained because he had been out of employment for a long time, and said that he did not know what would become of himself and family unless he could soon procure employment. The two brothers separated, Raymond Bergert going to the B.& O. Southwestern depot. He was standing upon the platform when the suicide, or accident, occurred. It seems that Marion Bergert, a while after his converstion with his brother on Main street, started west. Near the depot he met Policeman Ed Royce, to whom he also complained of his unfortunate condition, being out of employment and unable to get work. Bergert walked west along the railway. He passed the switch engine standing on a siding near the Elswick hotel, and Michael Toohey, the engineer, says he walked with head down as he passed the engine. According to the only eye witness to the tragedy, C.S. Welsh, a travelling salesman for the Harriet Dunley Supply Company of Indianapolis, Bergert either fell, or deliberately threw himself under the wheels of the train as it was pulling into the depot. Bergert did not fall upon the track in front of the locomotive. He dropped to the track between the tender and the mail coach, and death was instantaneous. Both his feet were cut off, his left arm was broken and his head and neck were badly bruised. His coat was torn completely off, but his body was not badly mangled. The body was taken to the Gill undertaking establishment where it was prepared for burial. Marion Bergert was twenty-six years old and was a son of H.S. Bergert, a retired farmer who is very ill at his home in this city. The young man was united in marriage to a daughter of Richard Robinson a year ago last August. Besides a wife he leaves an infant daughter. They live on north Meridian street. His father gave Marion a house and lot when he was married. This the young man sold and the proceeds from the sale were soon gone. Marion Bergert, some years ago, had an ambition to become a lawyer, and for some time read law in the office of Ogdon & Inman. During recent years he had not been regularly employed anywhere. He was a fine looking young man, and a perfect dresser. He had been despondent for some days and this gives strength to the theory that he committed suicide, but it may be that he stumbled and fell.

Wrecking of Hamer Cemetery Angers Writer

Dear Sir:

I noticed in my Tribune the wrecking of the Hamer Cemetery at Spring Mill Park. I hated to read that account as I have one brother and two sisters buried there. My grandfather, Thomas Hamer and his brother, Hugh, ran that mill before there were any railroads. My mother was born and raised in the Thomas L. Hamer home. All my people on my mother's side are buried in the Hamer Cemetery. My father was a stone mason and made the markers for my brother and my two sisters' graves. My mother was 14 years old when they built the old O. & M. Railroad. She said the men building the road would come down to the Hamer Cave to get water for the men working on the track. I noticed where Hugh Hamer's marker was broken in two different places. I can't think of anyone that would be mean enough to go into any cemetery and destroy markers like they did there. I only hope that the law can run them down. I am enclosing 25 cents for postage. Please send me two of last week's Tribunes, as I want to send them to my people who live out of town. Thank you.

Albert P. Evans, 87, 211 Front Street, died at the Crestview Nursing Home in Vincennes (IN) at 4:40PM Saturday. He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for one week. Born October 15, 1880, in Mitchell, Indiana, he was the son of Elijah and Angeline (Hamer) Evans. His wife, Ethel Bernadette (Robinson) Evans preceded him in death on August 6, 1958. Mr. Evans was a brakeman on the B.&O. Railroad and was a member of the First Methodist Church, Eagles Lodge, and the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen. He was educated in the Mitchell (IN) schools. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James (Pauline) Seidel, Washington; Mrs William (Mary Catherine) McMullen, Vincennes; one son, Paul F. Evans, Evansville; seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and 11 step great-grandchildren. One son, Robert G. Evans, and one step-daughter, Mrs Clara Wallace are deceased. Funeral services will be held at the Gill Funeral Home with Dr. Charles A. Tyler officiating and burial in the Mitchell (IN) Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. The Eagles Lodge will hold services at 7PM tonight.

William D. Robinson, aged thirty two years, died this morning at the state hospital near Evansville, Indiana. He had been a patient there for the last year. The body, upon arrival in Washington tomorrow, will be taken to the home of George Remmel, 801 Jefferson Street. Robinson's widow is a daughter of Mr. Remmel. The deceased man was a native of Washington and formerly was employed as a machinist's helper at the local shops of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad company. In addition to his widow and three children, he leave his mother, Mrs. Sarah(!) Jane Robinson, two brothers and four sisters.

The Washington Indiana City Directory for 1917 lists William Robinson and his wife Cora as living at 815 Robinson St. He was a machinist at the B. & O. Shops.

He was born Jan. 18, 1923, in Washington, the son of Hiram and Myrtle (Dyson) Robinson. A self-employed farmer, he served in the South Pacific in the navy during World War II. He was a member of the Wheatland United Methodist Church, V.F.W., Post 1147, and the Monroe City Masonic Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Margie Lou (Young)) Robinson; a son, Dan Robinson of Wheatland; a daughter, Cheryl McCormick of Vincennes; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2pm Wednesday at the Brockman and Son Funeral Home, the Revs. Howard "Pete" Chattin and Robert Granger officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Habitat for Humanity or the Knox County Humane Society.

Death Takes Clara Wallace. Funeral Services Will Be Held Friday Morning.

Mrs. Clara Bergert Wallace, wife of Charles C. Wallace, of the Troy Road, died at the Daviess County Hospital at 5:50 Tuesday evening, June 25, at the age of thirty-eight years and three months, having been born March 25, 1908. Mrs. Wallace was the daughter of Mrs. Ethel Bergert Evans, her father, Marion Bergert, having died December 17, 1908. She graduated from Washington High School in 1926, and entered nurses training at the St. Louis City Hospital. She was married to Charles C. Wallace, June 8, 1927. She was a member of the Church of Christ, East First and Hefron Street, Easter Star Lodge, the Auxiliary of the L.F. & E., and the Troy Home Economics Club. Mrs. Wallace was held in high esteeem by all who knew her, as an outstanding christian, mother, and friend. Her acts of kindness and love will long be remembered. Besides her husband she leaves three children, John, Anne, and Paul, her mother, Mrs. Ethel Evans, and one half brother Paul Evans of Evansville and two half sisters, Mrs James Seidel of this city, and Mrs. W. McMullen of Vincennes. The funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ, Friday morning, June 28, at 10 a.m. o'clock with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. The body will remain at the Gill Mortuary. The casket will be opened at the church. Eastern Star will hold services at the Gill Funeral Home at 8 p.m. Thursday evening.

Death Removes Clara Wallace.

Mrs. Clara Bergert Wallace, wife of Charles C. Wallace, of the Troy Road, died at the Daviess County Hospital at 5:50 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. She was 38 years old and was born March 25, 1908. Mrs. Wallace was the daughter of of Mrs. Ethel Bergert Evans, her father, Marion Bergert, having died Dec. 17, 1908. Wallace Rites Set for Tuesday.

Charles Clark (Buck) Wallace, 66, 5 West National Highway, died suddenly at his residence at 9am Saturday (March 6, 1971). He was a retired engineer with the B. & O. Railroad and was a member of the Hefron Street Church of Christ, Charity Lodge No. 30, F and A M, the Eagles Lodge and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. A Daviess county native, he was born April 9, 1904, to Aaron A. and Annie (Bresh) Wallace and graduated from Washington High School. In 1927 he married Clara Bergert, who died in 1946. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. John (Anne) Brown, Columbus, Ohio; two sons, John Wallace, Des Moines, Iowa, and Paul Wallace, Hanover, New Hampshire; and 13 grandchildren. Eight brothers and a sister preceded him in death. The funeral will be at 10:30am at the Gill Chapel with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. Bro. Ira Price will be the minister. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4pm today.

William C. "Mac" McMullen, 67, 1721 N. 14th St., died at 11:33am Saturday (May 5, 1984) in the Good Samaritan Hospital. The Lawrence County, Illinois, native was born on Feb. 22, 1917, to John and Mary Agnes (Steimel) McMullen. He was an electrical construction worker. His memberships included the Old Cathedral, Harmony Society, American Legion Post 73, Knights of Columbus Council 712, and Indiana Brotherhood of Eletrical Workers 725 of Terre Haute. He was an army veteran of World War II. Survivors are his wife of 44 years, Mary Catherine (Evans) McMullen; two sons, the Rev. John D. McMullen of Blue Cloud Abbey in South Dakota, and James McMullen of New Orleans; a daughter, Mrs. Lynn (Annette) Meyer of Vincennes; a brother, John L. "Moon" McMullen of Vincennes; and two granddaughters. An infant brother preceded him in death. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Tuesday at the Old Cathedral, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4pm to 9pm Monday at the Duesterberg-Frederick Funeral Home, with recitation of the rosary at 7:30pm.

Mr. Robinson was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He belonged to the Moose, Eagles, American Legion, and VFW of Muncie. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Laborers International Union of America No. 112. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Barbara) Parks of Huntingburg, two sons, James A. robinson Jr., and Robert E. INDIANAPOLIS-Helen Louise Robinson, 79, former Washington resident, died at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis at 3:15 a.m. Wednesday. She had been in failing health for several months.

The funeral will be at the St. Maryís Church Saturday at 10 a.m. with interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. Fr. David Martin will officiate.  Friends may call at the Ed Lee Mortuary from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. on Saturday. There will be a rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

She was born on April 26, 1919 in Wheatland to Sylvester B. and Elnora K. (Simpson) Williams. They preceded her in death. She married James A. ìBudî Robinson and Jesse Lee Monroe. They both preceded her in death.

Robinson was a homemaker and local St. Maryís Church member. She lived in the local area for 70 years until she moved to Indianapolis and was educated in Washington Schools. She was also a local member of the Moose Auxiliary and American Legion.

Surviving are her children, Barbara Ann Parks, Huntingburg; James A. Robinson, Jr. and Robert E. Robinson, both of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, Patricia Birk, Vincent, John, Fred and Edward Williams, all of Washington; Dorothy Hensley, Martin and Robert Williams, all of Terre Haute and Paul Williams, Lawrence, Kan.

She was also preceded in death by a great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Mary Oleta Greenwood, Margaret Hochesang and Martha Lee Williams and two brothers, Thomas S. and James Arthur Williams.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 663, Scottish Rite, Ararat Shrine and VFW Post 7900, all of Kansas City, MO. On July 7, 1951, he married Constance ``Connie'' Foster and she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter, Sheila Mae Robinson, and son, Rex Eugene Robinson, both of Kansas City, MO; two grandsons, Nicholaus Robinson and Adam Lee Robinson; and brother, Richard Robinson, Washington, IN.
