Vincennes Sun Commercial, Vincennes, Indiana, January 26, 1935. MRS MARY STEIMEL, 69, DIES AT HOME. Mrs. Mary Steimel, 69, of 915 Prairie street, died last night (Jan 25) at 9:30 o'clock at the home after a long illness, which only became serious, however, two weeks ago. Mrs Steimel was born in Ohio, the daughter of Ambrose and Emelia Vogt Ruppel, natives of Germany, April 23, 1865. She was a member of St John's Catholic church. She came to this community as a child and spent almost all her life here. She is survived by eight children, Fred, John, Leo, Mrs Rose Kocher, and Miss Cecelia Steimel at home, Joe of Springfield, Ill., Mrs Amelia Davis of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Mrs. Catherine Marchino of Decker; two brothers, John and Joe Ruppel of Vincennes; three sisters, Mrs Alex Bauer of Vincennes, Mrs. Thomas Lumbrezer of Swanton, Ohio, and Sister Mary Pierre of St Mary of the Woods, and 27 grandchildren.
Mrs. Mary Steimel. Final funeral rites for Mrs. Mary Steimel were conducted Monday morning at 9 o'clock from St. John's Catholic Church. Burial was made in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Pall bearers were: Paul Steimel, Melvin Steimel, Louis McMullen, William McMullen, Anthony Steimel, and Anthony Ruppel.

1863. Charles Steimel. On October 5, 1863, Charles Steimel, the legitimate son of Peter Steimel and Elizabeth, his wife, was baptized. He was born October 3, 1863. The godparents were: Charles Barthel and Katherine Ebner. Aegidius Merz, pastor.

Charles Steimel, age 67, life-long resident of this city and St. Thomas, and father of Fred Steimel, city councilman, died Sunday evening at his home, 915 Prairie Street. Blood poisoning resulting from a blister on his heel caused his death. Mr. Steimel spent most of his life farming near St. Thomas. During the last few years he had been working with his son, Fred. He was a life-long member of St. John's Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held at the church Wednesday morning (May 27) with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Steimel is survived by the widow and eight children, including Fred, John, Leo and Cecelia Steimel, and Mrs Rosa Kocher of Vincennes; Joe Steimel of Springfield, Ill., Mrs. Amelia Davis of Poplar Bluffs, Mo., and Mrs. Catherine Marchino of Decker. Twenty two grand children also survive.

Family tradition says that Charles and Joseph Steimel had a major disagreement. Joseph left for Texas. Peter Steimel was angry with both sons. He held Charles responsible. He excluded both sons from his will.

Miss Cecilia R. Steimel, 87, Rt 4, Vincennes, Indiana, died this morning at a Vincennes Nursing Home. She was born on May 17, 1892, to Charles and Mary Ruppel Steimel, and was a grocery clerk for 30 years. She was a member of St John Catholic church, the Legion of Mary, and St. Ann's Altar Society. Survivors include a brother, John Steimel, of Wheatland, and sisters, Mrs. Albert (Rose) Kocher, and Catherine Marchino of Vincennes. Six brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

Joseph P. Steimel, 71, died at 12:45pm, Friday, in the Good Samaritan Hospital following an illness of one week. Born in Knox County on August 18, 1894, a son of Charles and Mary Ruppel Steimel, he was a retired mechanic. He lived with his brother, John, on Wheatland Route 1. He is survived by three sisters, Miss Cecelia Steimel, Mrs. Rose Kocher, and Mrs. Catherine Marchino, all of Vincennes, and two brothers, John Steimel of Wheatland and Leo Steimel of Bruceville. Steimel was a member of the Old Cathedral. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10am. in the Old Cathedral with burial in Mt Calvary cemetery. Friends may call at the Duesterberg funeral home.

Mrs. Mary Ann Steimel, 71, died at 5:05pm Sunday at her home, 514 South Third Street. She was a native of Daviess County, Indiana, born Aug 16, 1874, a daughter of John and Mary Dunn McMullen. She is survived by four brothers, Edward McMullen of Vincennes, George McMullen of Detroit, Mich., James McMullen of Lyons, Kans, and William McMullen of Indianapolis, and two nephews, Louis McMullen and William McMullen, both of Vincennes. The body is at the residence on South Third Street. The Rosary will be recited at 8pm Monday at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 9am Tuesday at the Old Cathedral, Msgr Paul A. Deery officiating, and burial will be in Mt Calvary Cemetery.

Fred C.J. Steimel, local building contractor and former member of the city council, died in the Barnes Hospital at St. Louis Friday morning at 12:45 following a major operation last Monday. He was 56. He had been failing in health rapidly for the past six weeks. Mr. Steimel was born in the St. Thomas neighborhood, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Steimel. For the past 40 years he had been engaged in contracting and carpenter work. He married Evaline Carie in 1910. Surviving besides the widow are three sons, Paul Steimel of East St. Louis, and Melvin and Clarence Steimel of Vincennes, and one daughter, Mrs. Thelma Newton of this city. He also leaves two grandchildren; three brothers, John and Leo Steimel of Vincennes, and Joseph Steimel of Springfield, Ill., and two sisters, Miss Cecelia Steimel and Mrs. Albert Kocher of Vincennes. He was a member of the Old Cathedral parish and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and had served as trustee for the Eagles lodge. Funeral services will be conducted from the Old Cathedral Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. Burial will be in Mt Calvary Cemetery. Members of the parish will meet at the residence 722 Vigo Street Monday evening at 7:30 for prayers. The body will be returned to the residence Saturday afternoon to remain until the hour of the funeral.

Mrs. Evelena F. Steimel, 77, of 722 Vigo Street, Vincennes, died Friday in the Good Samaritan Hospital, after a brief illness. A Knox County native, Mrs Steimel was born Nov 6, 1892, a daughter of the late Florice and Emma Shappard Carie. She was the wife of Fred Steimel, who preceded her in death on July 27, 1946. She managed the Dolly Hat Shop, until she retired. She was a member of St John's Catholic Church and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Knights of St. John. Surviving are four children: Mrs. Grover (Thelma) Newton, and Melvin Steimel of Vincennes, and Paul and Clarence Steimel of Phoenix, Arizona, six grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Mary Seals of Vincennes. The body is at the Duesterberg Funeral Home, where briends may call after 2 pm, Monday, and where the auxiliary will hold services Monday at 7pm. The funeral Mass will be Tuesday from St. John's, with burial in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Another death was reported today from the emergency hospital, the victim being Mrs. John McMullen. The mother died this morning at five o'clock. She leaves, besides her husband, two children, William and Louis, age 18 months and three and one half years. Another child, born Sunday morning, died shortly after its birth. The deceased is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Steimel of Saint Thomas. The remains of the mother and child wre taken to the home of her parents this afternoon. The funerals will be conducted Tuesday morning at ten o'clock and will be private. There are seventeen cases of the influenza today at the emergency hospital, and with the securing of seven or eight nurses all are progressing nicely. The Misses Bernett and Willis are in charge at the hospital...

John Lewis McMullen, 28, farmer, died at the home of his uncle, John Dunn, 1425 Busseron street, Saturday morning at 7 o'clock, following a protracted illness. Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 9 o'clock from the St. Thomas Catholic Church. Interment was made in the St. Thomas Cemetery. Rev. Fr. Haas officiated. The pall bearers were: Maurice Stangle, Joseph March, Joseph Fleck, Frank Hess, Henry & John Steimel. Surviving are two children, William and Lewis McMullen and four brothers, George of Indianapolis; James and William of Vesper, Kansas; and Edward McMullen, Vincennes; one sister, Mrs. Mary Steimel, Vincennes.

Steimel, a member of St. Francis Xavier Basilica (Old Cathedral), was a former member of the Eagles. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Flossie Butler Steimel of Wheatland, three sons, Lawrence Steimel and Ray Steimel, both of Wheatland, and Joseph Steimel of Indianapolis, two sisters, Mrs. Albert (Rose) Kocher, and Mrs. Leonard (Katherine) Marchino, both of Vincennes, 13 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, five brothers and three sisters. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Wednesday at St Francis Xavier Basilica. The celebrant will be the Rev. Ralph Endress. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Survivors include three sons, Lawrence Steimel of Wheatland, Joseph Steimel of Indianapolis and Raymond Steimel of Vincennes; two brothers, Icel Butler of Vincennes and Marlin Butler of Decker; three sisters, Velma Hess and Lucille Froeschke of Vincennes, and Nellie McRae of Benton, KY; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. Her husband, John Steimel, two children and a brother are deceased. She was a member of Old Cathedral Catholic church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Monday at the Old Cathedral by the Rev. Robert Bultman. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 9pm at the Duesterberg-Frederick Funeral Home where the recitation of the Rosary is scheduled for 7:30pm.

Leo L. Steimel, 63, of Route 1, Bruceville, died at 2:45 pm Friday in the Good Samaritan Hospital, after an illness of six weeks. He was born in Knox County November 27, 1904, son of Charles and Mary Ruppel Steimel. He was a retired carpenter, and had also farmed near Bruceville for the past twenty years. In 1927 he married the former Agnes Mouzin, who survives as well as their seven sons, Robert, Charles, and Sam, all of Bicknell, James of Vincennes, Richard of Bruceville, Jack of Ragsdale, and William at home; five daughters, Mrs. John (Marietta) Earley of Oaktown, Mrs. Max (Norma) Cary of Vincennes, Mrs. John (Patricia) Clark of Bicknell, Mrs Wayne (Betty) Stephens of Bruceville, and Marjorie, at home. Also surviving are thirty eight grandchildren, a brother, John of Wheatland, and three sisters, Cecelia Steimel, Mrs. Rose Kocher, and Mrs. Katherine Marchino, all of Vincennes.

Funeral services for Leo L. Steimel were held at 9 am Monday at the Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Henry Doll officiating at the funeral mass. Serving as pallbearers were sons of the deceased Robert Steimel, Richard Steimel, James Steimel, Charles Steimel, William Steimel, Samuel Steimel, and Jack Steimel. Burial was in Mt Calvary Cemetery.

He was retired from his job as chief clerk of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagles of Lawrenceville. He also served as chairman of the Indiana State Legislative Committee for the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks, Freighthandlers Express, and Station Employees. Surviving are his wife Helen (Williams) McMullen; a son, Ronald W. McMullen, and a stepson, Paul Richardson, both of Vincennes; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and step great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10am Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Rev. Raymond Schroering, Randy Jungkurth, Father Reed Allega, and grandson John McMullen officiating. William C. "Mac" McMullen, 67, 1721 N. 14th St., died at 11:33am Saturday (May 5, 1984) in the Good Samaritan Hospital. The Lawrence County, Illinois, native was born on Feb. 22, 1917, to John and Mary Agnes (Steimel) McMullen. He was an electrical construction worker. His memberships included the Old Cathedral, Harmony Society, American Legion Post 73, Knights of Columbus Council 712, and Indiana Brotherhood of Eletrical Workers 725 of Terre Haute. He was an army veteran of World War II. Survivors are his wife of 44 years, Mary Catherine (Evans) McMullen; two sons, the Rev. John D. McMullen of Blue Cloud Abbey in South Dakota, and James McMullen of New Orleans; a daughter, Mrs. Lynn (Annette) Meyer of Vincennes; a brother, John L. "Moon" McMullen of Vincennes; and two granddaughters. An infant brother preceded him in death. Norman Raymond Steimel, 73, Wheatland, died at 1:59am today, Nov. 2, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Hospital. Born March 22, 1927, he was the son of John and Flossie (Butler) Steimel. A farmer and avid hunter, he was a Navy veteran of World War II, and member of the Old Cathedral Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, whom he married June 4, 1949; two daughters, Pamela Patrick of Vincennes, and Tabitha Ice of Evansville; a foster daughter, Paula Morning of Monroe City; a brother Lawrence Steimel of Wheatland; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Two brothers are deceased. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1pm Friday at the Old Cathedral by the Rev. John Schipp. Burial, with military honors by the American Legion/ Veterans of Foreign Wars Firing Squad, will be in Mt Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8pm Thursday at Duesterberg Frederick Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30pm.

Frieda Z. Steimel, 72, formerly of Wheatland, died at 7:35 am Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Petersburg Health Care. Born Dec 12, 1939(!) in Iowa, she was the daughter of Kenneth A. and Pauline (Cardinal) Morning. She was a homemaker and a member of the Moose Lodge and local bowling leagues. Her husband, Ray Steimel, died in December 1999. Two brothers are also deceased. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Raye Patrick of Vincennes and Tabitha Vee Ice of Evansville; a brothers, Earl D. Williams, Jr. of Petersburg; a sister, Paul Adams of Wheatland; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 10am Saturday at the Fredrick Funeral Home, 313 Church Street, by Pastor Joe Carter. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Pall bearers will be Tamara Adams, Kenny Pinkstaff, Kenny Frye, Ben Adams, Matt Stegall, and Mike Stegall.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic church and was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a past president of the local American Heart Association. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Norma (Steimel) Cary; his children, William "Bill" Cary of Bruceville, and Michael "Mitch" Cary, Stephen "Joe" Cary, Carol Hunckler, Brian Cary, and Paul Cary, all of Vincennes; a sister, Reda Mullins of Bicknell; 17 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
