Goodspeed's History of Lawrence County reports that Robert Wood established a ferry on the White River north of Spring Mill in 1823/24.

"About one-half mile below the mouth of Salt Creek a ferry was established by Robert Woods (sic) about 1823 or 1824. This was too near the Fields Ferry, which was a short distance below, to be licensed. Woods however built his boat and began ferrying, and allowed people to pay or not as they would choose. The strife between Fields and Woods became very bitter, and one night Woods' boat was burned. He at once built another and continued his business of ferrying. For the burning of the boat, two men were sent to the State Prison, named Lackey and Taylor. For a time the opposition between these two ferries was so strong that it extended to the people of the surrounding country. The quarrel was finally ended in 1826 by the Fields Ferry being vacated by the County Board, thus leaving the Woods faction in the ascendency. The Fields Ferry was located about one mile below this, and had been established for some time."

August 16, 1998. Blue Tour highlights northern Lawrence County. Checkpoint 15 is the junction with Ind. 58 in Springville. Turn left and travel four miles to Avoca. Checkpoint 16 is the Avoca Fish Hatchery. The hatchery grounds are open to the public. The old white house on the grounds serves as the property manager's home and is not open to the public. The house was once a stage coach stop and was the home of Joseph Hamer, brother of the men who operated Hamer's Mill at Spring Mill State Park near Mitchell. This Hamer also operated a mill on the hatchery grounds. The mill is no longer standing. (Bedford Times-Mail)

Avoca Landmark (Picture of residence at the Avoca Fish Hatchery by Claude Parsons). History of Avoca Dates Back to 1818; House at State Fish Hatchery Is 133 Years Old, By Claude Parsons. One of the oldest buildings in Lawrence County can be found in the town of Avoca. The building, which is reported to be 133 years old, is now the residence of the superintendent of the Avoca Fish Hatchery. In the early days, the building was an inn and travelers felt right at home there. It was built in 1823 by the Hamer Brothers, of North Carolina, who were the first settlers of the town back in 1818. One north upstairs room of the building was opened up as a grocery store in 1828. Avoca, with a present population of about 300, is located six miles northwest of Bedford in Marshall township. The first mill in the township, as well as being one of the earliest in the county, was build at Avoca about 1819 by a man named Fitzpatrick, and later sold to the Hamer Brothers. It was operated by a turbine waterwheel, and had three sets of buhrs -- one for wheat, one for corn, and one for chop feed. In 1884 the mill was valued at $2500... (Bedford Times-Mail, 1956) (The Hamer Brothers were not from North Carolina. They were from New York. The wives of the younger brothers were from North Carolina.)

Notes from Family Reunions. Avoca Mill Site. The mill at Avoca, which was built in 1819, burned down in the 1860's and was rebuilt. The mill was operated by turbine waterwheels. Water to run the mill came from a large underground spring which surfaces from a cave near the mill site. The mill had three sets of buhrs, one for wheat, one for corn, and one for chop feed. Hugh Hamer, Thomas L. Hamer, and Edward Fitzpatrick, their brother in law, built a house in 1823 for the residences of the mill owner. This building still stands, and is one of the oldest buildings in Lawrence County. The furnishings from the home were brought in by ox cart from Louisville, Kentucky. Although the home was built as a residence, over the years it has served as an inn, a post office, a general store, and a grocery store. It now serves as a residence for the superintendent of the Avoca Fish Hatchery, which bought the property in 1924. Edward Fitzpatrick owned and operated the mill from 1819 until he sold it to Absolam Hart. James Hamer and Joseph Hamer came to Indiana about 1828 or 29. They married sisters Sophia (1-5-1832) and Evaline Wood (7-17-1834), and on July 24, 1834, these brothers bought the mill and 200 acres of land for $800, from Absolam Hart (deed recorded on 6-9-1835). With a bright future and four little children, Joseph decided to buy the entire ownership of the mill and make a home for his family. On December 10, 1838, he bought out James for the sum total of $2,100. (Mortgage recorded on said date and deed recorded on December 11, 1839.) Sadness befell Joseph when his wife died on August 10, 1841, only a year and a half after buying. Because of this unforeseen circumstance, Joseph sold back the mill, house, and land to James Hamer. James acknowledges mortgage and signed it as fully satisfied on February 22, 1842. Joseph remarried on November 21, 1842, to Martha Jane Maddox and left Avoca to move to the Spring Mill area. By 1884 the mill was valued at $2,500. But after many years of disuse, it was bought and moved to Owensburg, Indiana, to be used as a private home. The place where this mill stood at Avoca can still be seen today.

In the matter of Pension Claim no. 345.794 of Joseph Hamer, as father of Hugh Hamer, Co. "F:, 15th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. Personally came before me a Justice of the Peace in and for aforesaid county and state, Joseph Hamer, aged seventy nine years, county of Orange, State of Indiana, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: that he resided in Lawrence County, Indiana, and that his post office address was Mitchell, Indiana, in the year 1863, and remained his residence until the year 1871; that he then removed to Daviess County, Indiana, and his post office address was Washington, Daviess County, Indiana; and that was his post office address until about the year 1880; that he then broke up housekeeping and has since been living with his son in law, in Dubois County, Indiana, and that Hillham has been his postoffice address ever since to the present time; that the names and ages of his family in the year 1863, consisted of the following named to wit: his self, Joseph Hamer born Sept 5, 1808; his wife, Martha J. Hamer, born July 14, 1823; ; Hugh Hamer, born September 15, 1835; Elizabeth Hamer, born March 6th, 1838; George W. Hamer, born Feb 22nd, 1840; Hannah Hamer, born born January 16th, 1843; Evalina Hamer, born November 6, 1846; Josephine, born June 14th, 1849; James M. Hamer, born October 25th, 1854; Arabell Hamer, born Dec 7th, 1858; that these were the names and members of his family in 1863; he also states that his son, Hugh Hamer, was never married; that at the time his son Hugh Hamer died he was depending on him to help keep up the family; that while said son was in the military service he sent money home to him to the amount of three hundred dollars; that before his son entered the military service he helped him work and provide for the family, and after he enlisted in the military service his son Hugh Hamer sent him three hundred dollars; that his son, Hugh, died on the 6th day of December 1863; That in the year 1863 he was the owner of a small piece of land near Mitchell, Indiana; that he paid for said land the sum of six hundred dollars; that he went to work and improved said land by building a house, and improving and repairing said land; that in a few years after he had purchased said land he became largely in debt, and was compelled to sell the same to pay his creditors, and when he had sold said land in the year 1871 he only had a few dollars left after paying his debts; siad claimant further states that he has been twice married; that his first wife was the mother of Hugh Hamer; that he has had to depend greatly on his children for his support for the last 25 years. On this 11th day of October, A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty six personally appeared before me, Thomas V. Thornton, Clerk of the Circuit Court, a Court of Record within and for the county and State aforesaid, Joseph Hamer, aged 78 years, who , being duly sworn according to law, makes the following declaration in order to obtain the Pension provided by Acts of Congress granting Pensions to dependent relatives: That he is the Father of Hugh Hamer who enlisted under the name of Hugh Hamer at Bedford, Indiana, on the 14th day of June, A.D. 1861, in Co. "F", 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry in the War of 1861, who received a gunshot wound in the ankle joint of his right foot, causing amputation of right leg, below the knee, and afterward a second amputation of thigh, which resulted in the death of said soldier on December 6, 1863, at or near Chattanouga, Tennessee. He bore at the time of his death the rank of private, in Co. "F", 15th Indiana Volunteers. That said son, Hugh Hamer, left neither widow nor child under sixteen years of age surviving; that said declarant was married to the Mother of said son at Lawrence County, Indiana, on the 17th day of July, A.D. 1834, by Squire Porter, that he was dependent upon said son for support; that the Mother of said son died at Lawrence County, Indiana, on the 10th day of August , A.D. 1841; that there were surviving at date of said soldier's death his brothers and sisters, who were under sixteen years of age, as follows (children of second wife): Josephine Hamer, born June 14, 1849; James M. Hamer, born October 26, 1854; Arabell Hamer, born Dec 7, 1858; that he has not heretofore received or applied for Pension; that he has not aided or abetted the Rebellion; and that Declarant hereby appoints, with full power of substitution and revocation, Anthony W. Jones of Mitchell, Indiana, true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim; that his residence is Warren Street, Mitchell, Indiana and his Post Office address is Mitchell, Indiana. In the matter of pension claim no. 345.794 of Joseph Hamer as father of Hugh Hamer, Co "F" 15th Regiment Indiana Vols, personally came before me a Justice of the Peace in and for said county and State, Elijah Evans, aged 43 years, a citizen of the town of Mitchell, county of Lawrence and state of Indiana well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit and who being duly sworn declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: that he is personally acquainted with claimant, has know him for 30 years last past; that he has seen the family Bible of the claimant giving the dates of the births and deaths of Hugh Hamer and Evalina Hamer as follows: Hugh Hamer was born on the 15th day of September, 1835; and Evalina Hamer died on the 1pth day of August, 1841. That he has no interest in this calimant for a pension; his post office address is Mitchell, lawrence County, Indiana. Signed: Elijah Evans. Personally came before me a Justice of the Peace in and for aforesaid county and state, Wesley Weaver, aged fifty years, citizen of the county of Orange, State of Indiana, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That he is well and personaly acquainted with claimant, Joseph Hamer; That he has known him for forty years last past; That he has lived with him in his family for the last seven years past; That he has had to support said applicant all the time he has been with him; That he is quite feeble and not able to help himself except to walk around and not able to do any work; he further states that said applicant has had to depend on his children and friends for the last twenty five years; That he has had no income, excpt what little work he could do himself; and for the last several years he has not been able to perform scarcely any manual labor at all. Munson, aged 59 years, citizen of the town of Mitchell, county of Lawrence, State of Indiana, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That he is wll and personally acquainted with Joseph Hamer and has known him for 45 years; that he remembers well that said Hamer had a serious spell of typhoid fever in 1853; and knows that said Hamer has never been stout since; that said Hamer has often complained when he would be with him of his back hurting him. Affiant further states that he knows of said Hugh Hamer, son of Joseph Hamer working for his father by day's work, before he entered the military service; that said claimant was never himself after his sickness with fever; that as to his income he had none except by day's work; he further declared that he has no interest in said case and is not concerned in its prosecution and is not related to said aplicant. Hamer during the month of Feb. last, Mr. Wood sold his possessions in the lower part of this county, and removed to Spring Mill, and became connected in business with his father-in-law, Col. Hugh Hamer.

Named after Harriet Montgomery, the wife of Joseph Montgomery, who owned the Mill at that time.

Dear Brother and Family,

With the greatest pleasure I drop you a few lines in answer to your kind and welcome letter which came to hand a few days ago. And we were truly glad to hear from you and to know that you are all well. Though I was sorry to hear that you wasn’t satisfied for I know it cost you a right smart to get there. But I was not a bit surprised to hear that. For that is what I said when I heard that you had gone there. Well, Harry, all I have to say is to get back to Missouri as soon as you can. And after that when they get to telling you of all those fine countries a way off yonder, tell them that far-off cattle have long horns and you have seen some of them and you are satisfied. Well, Harry, you wanted us all to meet you in Missouri. Well I will speak for myself. If I live I intend to go there. But whether I will get there this next fall or not I can't tell now. But I will come as soon as I get able. And I think I will start this fall. Though Sam Bright says he is going out there this fall if he can sell out and Ma says if we all leave here she will go too. Em says he is going to Kansas. So I guess you may look for Ma and Em and Sam and his family this fall. And I will come as soon as I can. You may bet on that for I am as big a baby after Ma as I ever was. Well, Harry, I will tell something about my crops. I have sowed 20 acres of oats. And I am going to put in 40 acres of corn, which I am about half done breaking the ground. But it has been raining here over a week and we haven't cut a furrow. But it has been in my favor for both my mares have found colts. And by this rain and corning I am not any further behind than my neighbors. I have just as fine a colt as I ever saw. I have two milk cows with calves and one of the calves is 4 months old and weighs 5 hundred pounds and we have been offered 25 dollars for him several times. But I think I will have to have 40 dollars for him or I will drive him to Missouri with me. I have 20 head of hogs which will do for fall market and I am fixed very well for farming. But rent is too high here for a man to make anything here. As renter I have to pay 30 dollars a year for the house I live in and 2 acres of ground. And my corn ground I have to pay 2 fifths of that. And shucked and put in the crib. And my cow and horse pasture cost me from 1 dollar to 150? per month a head if I get any. And stock can't live outside here . And any after a man raises corn and oats here it don't bring him anything. Oats ...(?) 25 cents a bushel and corn (?)... 30 cents a bushel. I had 300 bushel which I sold about a month ago for 30 cents at the (?). And I had to sell it on time. And how long I will have to wait I can’t tell. But I get 10 per cent from date. Money matters is mighty hard here. And not much hope of getting any better soon. There is lots of men breaking up. Mr. E. Wood, the man that I worked for so long. He has broke up and only payed about 50 cents to the dollar. Well, Harry, George Jacobs was up here today and said to tell you he would like to hear from you. George's health is not good. He has the rheumatism and is purty poorly. Mase is staying with me now. We buried their mother the 17th of this month and Mase has been with me ever since and says to tell you to write to him. We have had a good deal of sickness round here thus far and a good many deaths. We buried Ellie Cameron (Cambron), Brother Henry’s girl, by Frances Cameron (Cambron), the 19th of this month. Well, Harry, I am still living on what is called the Biggs Farm, 3 miles North of Bryantsville, but I am farming on the farm joining what is called the Kerns Farm. And George Jacobs is living on the Kerns farm. Brother Em has been working on the iron bridge that crosses the river at Haver (Hamer) Ferry. But they got out of iron. The work stopped. And I heard that Em had gone down the river on a flat boat. Em is doing better than he ever did. He is with Mother. Mother is well. Sam’s folks is all well. Well, we are all tolerably well. My little boys is having the ague. So I will close by saying this finds me well. I only hope you and family the same. Kiss the babies for their Uncle Bill and tell them I would like to see them. Write soon. Direct yours to Bryantsville, Indiana. So, Goodbye to you all for the time. I hope not for ever. Be good to yourselves until I meet you all someday. If not in this world, in some other. He says that he has been intimately acquainted with them since the date of their marriage and he knows that they have lived together as husband and wife until the date of death of William R. It appears that Harrison Hamer was listed twice in the 1860 Indiana Census of Lawrence County; once at home and once at work.

Indiana he died Aug. 14, 1924 in Barton County Missouri. he married Pernecty Francis McCuistain. She was born Apr. 25, 1851 Ray Co. Missouri and d March 12, 1919. Harrison Hamer was my great grandfather. My name is Betty (nee Mische) Mathews and my mother was Elton Cleva McKay. I grew up hearing stories that Harrison Hamer had been disowned by his family for his sympathies for the South during the Civil War, so there were no records as to his parents' names. I have also been told stories about his serving the Confederacy under John Gwinn McCuistion, Perneety Frances McCuistion's father (which is how he met her) and would like to find information about the period in his life between his mustering out of Co. H, 113th Reg. of the Indiana Legion in Indianapolis on July 17, 1863 at age 23 (from a certificate at the Hamer Mill museum in Mitchell, IN), and the time he shows up on the Marriage Index of Missouri, 1851-1900, on Jan. 20, 1870 as Harrison HAMMER, spouse of Permetty F. McCuistion in Ray County, MO. To date I have not yet followed up on Yulich's information that J. G. McCuistion (and, assumedly, Harrison Hamer) served in Company C, 3rd Reg. Missouri Infantry. I had understood he served under Captain Gwinn McCuistion who, according to a newspaper obituary stated "He organized and was made Captain of Company C of the third Missouri INFANTRY, and fought beneath the Stars and Bars for four years. He did not surrender until April 9th, 1865." However, I've also heard family stories that involved a HORSE, as follows: In 1998 Melissa Ruberson told a story of Harrison Hamer being on picket duty during the war, and getting off his horse to rest. When questioned as to why he was not on his horse he responded that he had heard a noise in the bushes and got off to investigate UNDER the horse's belly because of the bright moonlight. In 1998 Ben Reese Ruberson related a story he had been told about Harrison Hamer and Capt. Gwin McQuistion returning from the war (where Hamer had served under McQuistion) together, encountering ladies. Gwin told Hamer to hold Gwin's jug of white lightning while he talked with the ladies. On 7/10/63 he mustered into "H" Co. IN 113th Infantry; He was Mustered Out on 7/17/63 at Indianapolis, IN; Sources: - Report of the Adjutant General of the State of Indiana. The 113th Regiment Infantry was Organized July 10, 1863, to repel the Morgan Raid. Mustered out July 16, 1863. William R. Hamer, his brother, was also in this regiment.

In a letter to my mother, Elton McKay Mische, dated Nov. 20th, 1975, from her uncle Ollie Hamer in Buffalo, Wyoming, Ollie says, regarding his father [Harrison Hamer]: " ... I know he was a wonderful person as far as I am concerned and had a temper at times that would fry an egg but as for any of

his family I never knew anything about them. I know he had a brother 'Uncle Em Hamer' that lived in Web City, Mo. My understanding is he worked in the lead and Jack mines there around Joplin, Mo." It was quite a long, rambling letter, regretting that he knew so little about his father's family, but

since we have other information that Harrison's mother was living with Helmsley Montrose (Em) Hamer at one time, perhaps she was also living with him in Webb City, MO at the time of her death. - Betty Mathews

SAMUEL BIXLER BRIGHT, son of David and Lydia (Bixler) Bright, was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky, May 31, 1830. While a young man, he emigrated to Indiana, settling in Lawrence County, near the town of Bedford. On July 7, 1859, he married Maria Louisa Hamer, of Mitchell, Indiana. She was born August 26, 1841, daughter of James and Sophia (Wood) Hammer, the former a native of Ohio and the latter a native of North Carolina. In the year 1860, Samuel Bixler Bright, with his wife and baby son, removed from Indiana to Ray County, Missouri. The trip was made in a covered wagon. On the way to Missouri, they were joined by a party including William Wade Waters and his wife, Sarah (Bright) Waters, and children; William H. Bright, unmarried; and Margaret (Mag) Bright, also unmarried, sisters and brother of Samuel Bixler Bright. Four years later, Samuel Bixler Bright and his family returned to Indiana. In 1883, he again left Indiana for Ray County, Missouri, where he lived until his death, which occurred on December 13, 1909. His wife died December 31, 1915. Children of Samuel Bixler Bright and Maria Louisa Hamer, his wife, were as follows:

In the letter of William R. Hamer to his brother, Harrison, he says that Em wants to go to Kansas. It appears that he did since four children were born there.

Family tradition says he lived in Lawrence County Indiana, then Boone County, Indiana, then Dover Hill in Martin County Indiana, then Maysville in Daviess County Indiana. He was known as "Little George" to distinguish him from "Big George", the son of Hugh Hamer. He had green eyes and red hair. He had a stroke while playing cards with friends at Thomas Bluff on the White River. He had a second stroke the next day and died.

In a letter to my mother, Elton McKay Mische, dated Nov. 20th, 1975, from

her uncle Ollie Hamer in Buffalo, Wyoming, Ollie says, regarding his father

[Harrison Hamer]: " ... I know he was a wonderful person as far as I am

concerned and had a temper at times that would fry an egg but as for any of

his family I never knew anything about them. I know he had a brother 'Uncle

Em Hamer' that lived in Web City, Mo. My understanding he worked in the led

and Jack mines there around Joplin, Mo. ..." It was quite a long, rambling

letter, regretting that he knew so little about his father's family, but

since we have other information that his mother was living with Helmsley

Montrose (Em) Hamer at one time, perhaps she was also living with him in

Webb City, MO at the time of her death. - Betty Mathews
