Andante' is a full blooded Purebred Nubian Doe. She, after 5 bucks, was the first "gal" born on our farm. Andante' has a twin brother (a buck), Amadeus, and they were born on June 11, 1997. Amadeus was wanted by another goatkeeper, and has a new home now.
Andante' gave us a scare back in November of 1997, when she had eaten some moldy hay. My husband and I were up at the hospital with his mother, and a neighbor was helping out, and he did not know that mold is dangerious to a goat. Andante' ended up with Polio (polioencephamalcia). We we lucky to notice that she was acting funny one morning, walking around star gazing, and somewhat stiff legged and almost blind. So we immediately gave her some Vit. B Complex shots. After several days of medication she pulled through. Now she is getting much bigger and is one very beautiful doe.
Let me tell you how we ended up with goats.
One day a neighbor of ours, Hazle Thomas, asked me if I'd like to go out on a milk test run with her. A milk test run? That's when she would go out and gather samples of goat milk to take to Prudue University, to have it tested for some reason or the other.. I think more for the dairy owners records. We arrived at the goatkeepers home, and they (Bob & Mary Ingles, Wind-Wild Farm) had more goats that I had ever dreamed someone would have. Well, bless her heart, Mary brought out a baby doe from inside her house. Yes, from inside her house... I thought "how strange"... well, I do that now too...hahaha. Mary put the baby doe into my arms and... well, let me tell you something here - once you see and hold a baby Nubian goat, you are sunk, hook, line and sinker. I immediately fell in love with this little darling. Oh how I wanted one.
One year later... my neighbor, Hazle, pulled up into my drive way at 11:45 PM (almost midnight) and honked her horn. All the lights in the house were on, so she knew we were up. I went out to her car and she says "I'm going back to the Ingles tomorrow and I'll pick you up at 8 AM, be ready. Mary has some does for sale". Before I could say anything, she had her car in reverse and was pulling out of the drive way. I told my husband and he said "...just go on out there and take a look at them". He should have known better. So, I did!!! I went with her and Mary told me about one milker and her doe that she wanted to sell. Milker? I thought!!!! After seeing the does, well... just had to have them.
Gee... Marshmellow, the baby doe, was only 4 days old. I was scared. We built a shed for the two girls, and put up fence, and supplied the shed with straw and a heat lamp. Then we brought the girls to our home, and put them in their new home. Then... a few hours later... I had to learn how to milk, and had no milking stand. Marshmellow's dam, Snazzy, was a kicker. She wanted no part of milking. I worked with her that night for almost an hour trying to get her milked. WHAT A CHORE!!!! Again the next morning, another hour! Well, that next afternoon, my husband built a milk stand. Oh what a difference. She still was kicking, but after just a few days, she setteled down and was a wonderful milker. Hazle and Mary told me, she'd just have to get use to me milking her. She'd stand in the milk stand and eat her grain while I milked her, never giving me anymore trouble.
The following fall another goatkeeper came by, because she noticed we had goats, and begged us to sell Snazzy to her. Snazzy had a lopsided utter, and very small teats, so we sold her. Then a few days later that goatkeeper came back and wanted her doe kid, Marshmellow... I said "NO!!" We still have Marshmellow. She is the dam to Andante' and Amadeous.
In 1999 we had Andante'and her dam, Marshmellow, and another goat named Sadie. Marshmellow and Sadie both had twins, in 1998. Three more bucks, (now wethers), and another doe. They are all registered with the ADGA (American Dairy Goat Association). In 1999 Andante' had twins again, a doe and a buck, Marshmellow had one buck in 1999, and Sadie had twin bucks in 1999.
